Trail running races are much like regular road running races except that they are off-road by definition, and generally longer than your typical road race. The premier global trail running race is the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, held in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France. It is a 174 km (108 mi) race with 10,000 m (33,000 ft) of elevation gain. This race is organized by the UTMB Group. In addition to the UTMB, they organize 40+ prominent races worldwide called the “UTMB World Series”. Their website, UTMB.world, contains the results of these events. But, to my surprise, it also contains the results of tens of thousands of other trail running races.
Data was scraped from UTMB.world in two steps: First, I had to find all unique race identifiers (race UIDs) since they are erratic, and then I had to scrape each year held. In total, I found 15,679 race UIDs ranging from 4 to 45,846. The total number of races held was 38,460. See the "Scripts used in data collection" notebook for all methods. Second I scraped the content of these all unique race UIDs.
This data collection contains raw scraped data and an easy-to-read CSV file. Please look at the raw file's documentation for more information. A computerized data set of demographic, economic and social data for 227 countries of the world. Information presented includes population, health, nutrition, mortality, fertility, family planning and contraceptive use, literacy, housing, and economic activity data. Tabular data are broken down by such variables as age, sex, and urban/rural residence. Data are organized as a series of statistical tables identified by country and table number. Each record consists of the data values associated with a single row of a given table. There are 105 tables with data for 208 countries. The second file is a note file, containing text of notes associated with various tables. These notes provide information such as definitions of categories (i.e. urban/rural) and how various values were calculated. The IDB was created in the U.S. Census Bureau''s International Programs Center (IPC) to help IPC staff meet the needs of organizations that sponsor IPC research. The IDB provides quick access to specialized information, with emphasis on demographic measures, for individual countries or groups of countries. The IDB combines data from country sources (typically censuses and surveys) with IPC estimates and projections to provide information dating back as far as 1950 and as far ahead as 2050. Because the IDB is maintained as a research tool for IPC sponsor requirements, the amount of information available may vary by country. As funding and research activity permit, the IPC updates and expands the data base content. The world's population first reached one billion people in 1803, and reach eight billion in 2023, and will peak at almost 11 billion by the end of the century. Although it took thousands of years to reach one billion people, it did so at the beginning of a phenomenon known as the demographic transition; from this point onwards, population growth has skyrocketed, and since the 1960s the population has increased by one billion people every 12 to 15 years. The demographic transition sees a sharp drop in mortality due to factors such as vaccination, sanitation, and improved food supply; the population boom that follows is due to increased survival rates among children and higher life expectancy among the general population; and fertility then drops in response to this population growth. Regional differences The demographic transition is a global phenomenon, but it has taken place at different times across the world. The industrialized countries of Europe and North America were the first to go through this process, followed by some states in the Western Pacific. Latin America's population then began growing at the turn of the 20th century, but the most significant period of global population growth occurred as Asia progressed in the late-1900s. As of the early 21st century, almost two thirds of the world's population live in Asia, although this is set to change significantly in the coming decades. Future growth The growth of Africa's population, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, will have the largest impact on global demographics in this century. I applied bits of text mining, natural langauge processing, and data science to a pair of annual editions of Race and Ethnic Relations, and below is a summary of what I learned.
A cross-national data set of 21 variables was assembled for 212 countries from three sources (Barro and Lee 1994; Gordon 2005; CIA World Fact Book 2005). Our data set includes several proxy measures for national wealth, cultural diversity, social instability (both at national and international levels), and demography. Separate diversity measures were calculated for three different cultural domains, namely language, religion and ethnic groups . In addition, wealth variables (per capita GDP, and GINI, the coefficient of income inequality) were assembled, along with indicators of societal functioning drawn from the literature (especially Barro and Lee 1994), including indices of political rights (PRIGHTSB), revolutions and coups d'états (REVCOUP), and political instability (PINSTAB). Measures of international conflict were extracted from the social science literature, and the following were used: the proportion of the time between 1960-85 the country was involved in an external war (WARTIME), the number of international disputes in which the country was involved (TOTINTDISP), and an index of total military expenditure (TOTMILITEXP). Possible confounding variables such as population size (POPSIZE) and the number of international borders (NBINTBORDERS) were also included.

The concurrent programming literature is rich with tools and techniques for data race detection. Less, however, has been known about real-world, industry-scale deployment, experience, and insights about data races. Golang (Go for short) is a modern programming language that makes concurrency a first-class citizen. Go offers both message passing and shared memory for communicating among concurrent threads. Go is gaining popularity in modern microservice-based systems. Data races in Go stand in the face of its emerging popularity.
In this paper, using our industrial codebase as an example, we demonstrate that Go developers embrace concurrency and show how the abundance of concurrency alongside language idioms and nuances make Go programs highly susceptible to data races. Google's Go distribution ships with a built-in dynamic data race detector based on ThreadSanitizer. Dynamic race detectors pose scalability and flakiness challenges; we discuss various software engineering trade-offs to scale this detector to work effectively at scale.
We have deployed this detector in our 50-million lines of Go codebase hosting 2100 distinct microservices, found over 2000 data races, fixed over 1000 data races, spanning 790 distinct code patches submitted by 210 unique developers over a six-month period. Based on a detailed investigation of these data race patterns in Go, we make seven high-level observations relating to the complex interplay between the Go language paradigm and data races.
