This dataset includes live births, birth rates, and fertility rates by race of mother in the United States since 1960. Data availability varies by race and ethnicity groups. All birth data by race before 1980 are based on race of the child. Since 1980, birth data by race are based on race of the mother. For race, data are available for Black and White births since 1960, and for American Indians/Alaska Native and Asian/Pacific Islander births since 1980. Data on Hispanic origin are available since 1989. Teen birth rates for specific racial and ethnic categories are also available since 1989. From 2003 through 2015, the birth data by race were based on the “bridged” race categories (5). Starting in 2016, the race categories for reporting birth data changed; the new race and Hispanic origin categories are: Non-Hispanic, Single Race White; Non-Hispanic, Single Race Black; Non-Hispanic, Single Race American Indian/Alaska Native; Non-Hispanic, Single Race Asian; and, Non-Hispanic, Single Race Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (5,6). This data comes from the US Census Bureau's 2015 American Community Survey. This product uses the Census Bureau Data API but is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau.

Editor’s Choice In 2021, 7.9% of the US labor force was employed in technology. Women hold only 26.7% of tech employment, while men hold 73.3% of these positions. White Americans hold 62.5% of the positions in the US tech sector. Asian Americans account for 20% of jobs, Latinx Americans 8%, and Black Americans 7%. 83.3% of tech executives in the US are white. Black Americans comprised 14% of the population in 2019 but held only 7% of tech employment. For the same position, at the same business, and with the same experience, women in tech are typically paid 3% less than men. The percentage of black and Hispanic employees at major tech companies is very low, making up just one to three percent of the tech workforce. Bank of America's workforce has undergone a significant shift in racial diversity over the past six years. The share of white employees decreased from **** percent in 2019 to **** percent in 2024, marking a notable change in the company's demographic composition. Meanwhile, the representation of Hispanic, Asian, and Black racial groups grew steadily. The second-largest racial group in the observed period was Hispanic, whose share increased from **** to **** percent.

In 2022, more than four out of five (**** percent of) advertising and promotions managers in the United States identified as white. Almost ** percent were Black or African American. That same year, nearly half of ad and promotions managers in the U.S. were female.

In 2023, **** percent of Black people living in the United States were living below the poverty line, compared to *** percent of white people. However, the United States' poverty rate has been fluctuating since 1990, but has been decreasing since 2014. The average median household income in the U.S. has remained somewhat consistent since 1990, but has recently increased since 2014 until a slight decrease in 2020, potentially due to the pandemic. The state that had the highest number of people living below the poverty line in 2020 was California.

The issue of race and slavery was arguably the largest cause of the American Civil War, with the southern states seceding from the Union as the practice of slavery became increasingly threatened. From the graph we can see that roughly 16.5 percent of the entire US population at this time was black, and the vast majority of these were slaves. In 1860 there were almost 27 million white people, four and a half million black people, and less than one hundred thousand non-black or white people (mostly of Native/Latin American or East-Asian origin).

About this dataset

Context

The dataset tabulates the population of Knoxville by race. It includes the population of Knoxville across racial categories (excluding ethnicity) as identified by the Census Bureau. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Knoxville across relevant racial categories.

Key observations

The percent distribution of Knoxville population by race (across all racial categories recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau): 73.90% are white, 16.11% are Black or African American, 0.15% are American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.56% are Asian, 0.04% are Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 1.81% are some other race and 6.43% are multiracial.
