Graph and download economic data for Rail Freight Carloads (RAILFRTCARLOADSD11) from Jan 2000 to May 2025 about railroad, freight, and USA.
Rail freight volumes in the United States have been genually increasing since 2016, reaching **** trillion tonne-kilometers in 2018. However, this figure dropped again to **** trillion tonne-kilometers in 2023. Rail Freight Owing to its geographic and economic size, the United States has one of the world’s largest freight rail networks. The most common commodities carried by rail in the U.S. are coal, chemicals and grain. Rail freight is especially suited to transporting bulk commodities such as these owing to the higher volumes that can be transported together, and the existence of specialized carriages, such as tank cars designed for transporting chemicals. Trucking in the United States Rail is only one segment of the U.S. freight industry, with trucking accounting for the vast majority of freight transported in the United States. While freight trucking also experienced a decline from the middle of the decade, revenue streams have since recovered to create a market worth almost *** billion U.S. dollars. In total, there were over ******* heavy truck drivers in the U.S. in 2021.

United States US: Rail Freight Transport: Total data was reported at 2,180,386.842 Tonne-km mn in 2024. This records an increase from the previous number of 2,075,937.889 Tonne-km mn for 2023. United States US: Rail Freight Transport: Total data is updated yearly, averaging 2,449,731.000 Tonne-km mn from Dec 2004 (Median) to 2024, with 21 observations. The data reached an all-time high of 2,703,894.000 Tonne-km mn in 2014 and a record low of 2,075,937.889 Tonne-km mn in 2023. United States US: Rail Freight Transport: Total data remains active status in CEIC and is reported by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The data is categorized under Global Database’s United States – Table US.OECD.ITF: Freight Transport by Mode of Transport: OECD Member: Annual. [COVERAGE] Rail freight transport is defined as any movement of goods using a railway vehicle on a given railway network. When a railway vehicle is being carried on another rail vehicle only the movement of the carrying vehicle (active mode) is being considered. [COVERAGE] Data include freight transport carried out by Class 1 (major) railroads. [STAT_CONC_DEF] Until 2003, data are not available. Monthly data are not available.
In 2023, China's rail freight turnover amounted to 3.65 trillion ton-kilometers, representing an increase of 1.4 percent from the previous year. Rail freight turnover is calculated as the product of the volume of goods transported in metric tons and the distance traveled in kilometers.
In 2020, goods traveled approximately *** trillion tonne kilometers by rail in Europe, ranking slightly lower than Asia and Oceania, where almost *** trillion tonne kilometers of cargo was transported by railroad in the same year. Rail freight traffic worldwide presented a considerable decrease between 2019 and 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, with the exception of Africa, where there was a slight drop of only *** percent in freight activity. A connected European network Centrally located and transporting roughly 120 billion tonne-kilometers of freight annually, Germany represents the largest rail freight market in Europe, followed by Poland and France. Further investment in high-speed railroad networks in economically developing regions such as eastern Europe is expected to facilitate growth in overall regional rail freight traffic, rail capacity, and revenue. This will especially be of relevance in the context of the Belt and Road project, which will optimize the efficient movement of goods by rail directly between eastern Europe and China. South Africa leads the African rail freight market The Africa region has one of the least dense railway networks worldwide, with only South Africa boasting a comprehensive network that covers a large proportion of its land. Responsible for around two-thirds of the continent’s performance in terms of rail freight haulage, South Africa dominates the rail freight market in the region. Nevertheless, rail freight activities in Africa overall rose sharply from a low base in 2020, reaching just over 170 billion tonne-kilometers, indicating that further growth in the region is possible, particularly if more is invested in rail infrastructure across the entire continent.

The rail freight transport volume in Russia decreased to 2,545.3 billion ton-kilometers since the previous year. This means a decline of 57,144.4 million ton-kilometers (-2.2%) in 2020.Rail freight transport refers to the movement of goods on a railway network through the use of trains and railroads. The types of cargo transported vary but include bulk cargo, intermodal containers, and general or specialized freight. The Intermodal Freight Facilities - Rail TOFC/COFC dataset was compiled on December 10, 2018 and was updated on July 22, 2022 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). When available, the primary sources for this dataset were the websites of the railroads. Every facility is assumed to be served by both rail and truck, and those facilities which support port operations, the name of the port is also identified. The dataset also includes the services provided at each facility (TOFC only, COFC only, or both TOFC and COFC), and the Station Point Location Code (SPLC) associated with the rail facility. This dataset is one of several layers in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) Intermodal Freight Facility Database.
