The 2024 figure marks a significant increase in comparison to the previous year. Behind the scenes Whereas female share in lead roles in cinema has mostly increased, that progress is much slower behind the camera. Despite reaching an all-time high in 2021, women represented less than a quarter of movie writers in 2024. That gap is even wider for directing roles. As of 2024, women still accounted for less than ** percent of all movie directors, a significant decrease compared to the figures recorded in 2021. Who goes to the movies? During a survey concluded during the first quarter of 2024, men aged 18 to 34 represented ** percent of the movie-going audience. Among women of the same age, the share stood at ** percent, the highest value among all age brackets considered. Anoter study led in 2025 showed that Gen Z consumers went to the movies more frequently than other generations. About a third of Gen Z respondents claimed to go to the theaters a few times a month, while movie-going frequency decreased with age.

Our sample displays a 2-to-1 ratio of male to female characters. Proportion tests reveal an unequal proportion of Male agents to Female agents, and Female patients to Male patients (p < 0.0001).

In 2024, ** percent of all male characters appearing in the top 100 highest-grossing films in the United States were white. Black female characters accounted for about ** percent of all speaking characters that same year.

In 2025, women accounted for 27 percent of the nominees for the main non-acting categories at the Academy Awards, down from 32 percent a year earlier. Only 20 percent of the nominees in the Directing (Best Director) category were women in 2025.

In 2025, men almost accounted for the majority of the nominees for all major non-acting categories at the Academy Awards. All contenders in the Cinematography category were male. The category with the highest level of female participation that year was Documentary (short subject).

Dataset Description

This is the training partition of the BlEmoRe dataset, released as part of the BlEmoRe Challenge on Blended Emotion Recognition. It includes 2,456 multimodal portrayals of both basic and blended emotions, recorded under controlled studio conditions with synchronized audio and video.

A total of 47 actors and actresses participated in the recordings. Each was instructed to express:

Basic Emotions

• Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness — portrayed in four different intensities (int1–int4)

• Neutral — portrayed in four distinct but equivalent imagined situations (sit1–sit4); these situations are not ordered or ranked, and are included primarily to increase variability in neutral portrayals

Blended Emotions

• All pairwise combinations of the five basic emotions (excluding neutral)

• Portrayed in three blend ratios:

  • 50/50: equal salience

  • 70/30: first emotion dominant

  • 30/70: second emotion dominant

Expressions were conveyed using facial expressions, body movement, and non-linguistic vocalizations (e.g., sighs, laughs). Participants were instructed to appear naturalistic and avoid exaggerated or stereotypical portrayals.

File Format & Naming Convention

The dataset is split into five ZIP archives containing raw .mov video files. Each file follows the naming pattern:

• : unique identifier for the actor/actress

• : one of the five basic emotions

• : int1–int4 for intensity, sit1–sit4 for neutral context

• : ver1, ver2, etc. (some portrayals have multiple valid takes)

A metadata file is provided, containing:

• Filename

• Emotion(s) and blend ratio

• Actor/actress gender

• Suggested validation fold assignment — each fold contains non-overlapping actors/actresses, and the folds are generally balanced by gender.

Women remain unseen behind the scenes Even though there has been some visible progress over the past few years, diversity remains a hotly contested issue in Hollywood and the entire U.S. entertainment business. The share of female movie writers, for example, still only stood at about ** percent in 2024 despite having increased for several years. Not only that, but a recent ranking of the ** highest-grossing film directors of all time also revealed that all top-earning directors are male, highlighting the firm financial gap between male and female professionals in the industry. Representation on camera The gender distribution of lead actors in movies has become much more balanced in recent years. In 2024, for example, women accounted for roughly ** percent of film leads in the U.S., significantly higher than the **** percent share they had reached in 2011. The latest reports also indicated that women and people of color have made significant gains during the past decade in terms of on-screen employment. Both groups have approached or even surpassed proportionate representation compared to U.S. demographic data. That said, on-screen presence does not automatically imply inclusion or guarantee the appropriate portrayal of diverse groups on TV and the big screen.

The synthetic data comes from 10 voice actors (balanced gender ratio of 1:1) in a professional recording studio (background noise <18dB(A)). Each of them makes 1 recording per week as part of a total recording cycle of 2 weeks, and the recorded content comes from Chinese songs.

Meanwhile, the list of top-grossing film directors of all time included Steven Spielberg and the Russo brothers. Acting in Hollywood: who leads the way? One of the most influential film industries worldwide has seen an increasing percentage of women and people of color among its protagonists. The share of non-white lead actors in American cinema went from less than 11 percent in 2011 to about 22 percent a decade later. The gender distribution in Hollywood followed a similar pattern. In 2011, women accounted for roughly one-fourth of the lead roles in films in the U.S. In 2023, the share stood above 32 percent. Diversity at the Oscars Historically, the most prestigious ceremony in the U.S. film industry does not always the reality of the movie-making sector or the country's population in general. For instance, 25 percent of Academy Award-winning movies in 2020 had female lead actors, the lowest percentage since 2016. Also in 2020, over 62 percent of Oscar-winning films had non-white directors – all the moviemakers rewarded at the 2011 ceremony were white.

Between 2012 and 2022, men's share in the voting body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decreased by ** percentage points. Still, women accounted for one-third of all persons eligible to vote for the Oscars in 2022. Moreover, that same year, less than ** percent of the nominees for non-acting categories at the Academy Awards were female.
