The Soil and Water Resources Conservation Act (RCA) provides broad natural resource strategic assessment and planning authority for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The purpose of the RCA is to ensure that USDA programs for the conservation of soil, water, and related resources are responsive to the long-term needs of the Nation. This site supports the RCA by providing data from a variety of sources, including data on the status and trends of natural resources, conservation efforts (funding and conservation practices applied), and the agricultural sector. Reports can be created at the State, Regional, or National level. Regional data reports are available for the USDA Farm Production Regions, and Conservation Effects Assessment Program (CEAP) publications are available by CEAP regions. Options for Conservation Programs, or summary reports from the National Resources Inventory (NRI), the Economic Research Service (State level only), and the Census of Agriculture (State level only) can be selected. Reports can be downloaded as CSV files that can then be opened in spreadsheet software such as Excel, or viewed directly online with graphics as HTML or PDF. The 2017 National Resources Inventory (NRI) conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides updated information on the status, condition, and trends of land, soil, water, and related resources on the Nation's non-Federal lands. Non-Federal lands include privately owned lands, tribal and trust lands, and lands controlled by State and local governments. The 2017 NRI provides nationally consistent data for the 35-year period 1982–2017. This current NRI database should be used to compare 2017 conditions with those for earlier years. Major releases of these data continue to be reported at 5-year intervals. The NRI survey framework was also used to conduct focused data collections, such as the annual Grazing Lands On-Sites, the Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) Farmer Surveys, and other one-time special studies. Statistical estimation and quality assurance procedures employed for the NRI survey program help ensure that trends reported using NRI data reflect true changes in resource conditions; Chapter 7 Methodology and Use section of this report provides further explanation. This report presents national- and state-level estimates from the 2017 NRI for the 48 conterminous states, Hawaii, and the Caribbean Territories for basic NRI data themes, including changes and trends in land cover/use, irrigation, land capability class and subclass, prime farmland, soil erosion, and wetlands. Information on how to request additional NRI estimates can be found on the NRI Web site at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/nri/. NRI summary report (pdf), data tables (xlsx), and figures (zip) are available for download, and State and Regional profiles based on the 2017 NRI can be found through the RCA data viewer.
