In 2019, around 14 percent of the Vietnamese population were categorized as religious believers. Six percent of the population were Roman Catholics, followed by Buddhists at five percent. Other smaller religious groups included Hinduism, Muslim, Baha'i Faith, and members of the Church of Jesus Christ. Religious groups originating within the country were Buu Son Ky Huong, Tu An Hieu Nghia, Minh Su Dao, Minh Ly Dao, Tinh Do Cu Si Phat Hoi, and Phat Giao Hieu Nghia Ta Lon. Also, present within the country was a small Jewish population as well as individuals that blend traditional practices with religious teachings.

The annual report to Congress on international religious freedom – the International Religious Freedom Report – describes the status of religious freedom in every country. The report covers government policies violating religious belief and practices of groups, religious denominations and individuals, and U.S. policies to promote religious freedom around the world.

By some measures, East Asia seems like one of the least religious regions in the world. Relatively few East Asian adults pray daily or say religion is very important in their lives. Similarly, according to a new "https://www.pewresearch.org/" Target="_blank">Pew Research Center survey of more than 10,000 adults in East Asia and neighboring Vietnam, rates of disaffiliation - people leaving religion - are among the highest in the world. Yet, the survey also finds that many people across the region continue to hold religious or spiritual beliefs and to engage in traditional rituals.

Pew Research Center conducted random probability-based surveys among a total of 10,390 adults (ages 18 and older) in five places: Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam. Interviewing in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan was carried out under the direction of Langer Research Associates, and interviewing in Hong Kong and Vietnam was carried out under the direction of D3 Systems. In Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, interviews were conducted via computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI). In Vietnam, interviews were administered face-to-face using tablet devices, also known as computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI). All surveys were conducted between June 2 and Sept. 17, 2023.
