This repository provides highly localized statistics on religion and politics in India under an open license. I aim to cover Uttar Pradesh as comprehensively as possible, and the rest of India during general elections (see roadmap) and/or if other people contribute. A (potentially incomplete) list of academic usecases for this data is on Google Scholar; there is also a separate folder with examples to replicate.
Fortunately, recent transparency initiatives by the Election Commission of India in general and the Chief Electoral Officer of UP in particular now allow researchers to shift the central unit of quantitative political analyses from the constituency level to that of polling booths, stations, and villages (earlier, such data had to be interpolated or estimated). Often, this data is not very user-friendly, though (think garbled, scanned PDFs). The purpose of this repository is to curate this data in a more accessible format and to share the scraping and cleanup code for reference. This official data is then supplemented with estimates of religious demography based on the religious connotations of electors' names in the voter lists.
In the financial year 2024, the employment rate in India was the highest among Christians, at over 40 percent. The unemployment rate was the lowest among Muslims during the period, however, it was an increase from the previous financial year. The unemployment rate has risen across all religions since the last financial year.
According to a survey conducted between 2013 and 2014 across India, 80.9 percent of the heads of households in the country identified as Hindu, followed by 13.1 percent of Muslim heads of households. This is a direct indicator that although religiously pluralistic, India is a largely Hindu nation.

India's population demographics - total population, growth rate, age-wise and state-wise population, languages spoken, and religion.
It was estimated that by 2050, India's Muslim population would grow by 76 percent compared to 2010. For followers of the Hindu faith, this change stood at 33 percent. According to this projection, the south Asian country would be home not just to the world's majority of Hindus, but also Muslims by this time period. Regardless, the latter would continue to remain a minority within the country at 18 percent, with 77 percent or 1.3 billion Hindus at the forefront by 2050.
