In the last few decades, the Democratic Party has often pulled ahead of the Republican Party in terms of party identification. However, 2022 saw a shift in party identification, with slightly more Americans identifying with the Republican Party for the first time since 2011, when both parties stood at ** percent in 2011. These values include not only those surveyed who identified with a major political party, but also those who identified as independent, but have leanings towards one party over another.
Whites have become decreasingly likely to support the Democratic Party. I show this shift is being driven by two mechanisms. The first mechanism is the process of ideological sorting. The Democratic Party has lost support among conservative whites because the relationships between partisanship, voting behavior, and policy orientations have strengthened. The second mechanism relates to demographic changes. The growth of liberal minority populations has shifted the median position on economic issues to the left and away from the median white citizen’s position. The parties have responded to these changes by shifting their positions and whites have become less likely to support the Democratic Party as a result. I test these explanations using 40 years of ANES and DW-NOMINATE data. I find that whites have become 7.7-points more likely vote for the Republican Party and mean white partisanship has shifted .25 points in favor of the Republicans as a combined result of both mechanisms.

The dataset tabulates the Republican City population over the last 20 plus years. With Abraham Lincoln's victory in the 1860 presidential election, the Republican Party cemented its position as one of the two major political parties in the United States. Since 1860, candidates from both parties have faced one another in 41 elections, with the Republican candidate winning 24 elections, to the Democrats' 17. The share of electoral college votes is often very different from the share of the popular vote received by each candidate in the elections, as the popular vote differences tend to be much smaller. Electoral college system In the U.S., the electoral college system is used to elect the president. For most states, this means that the most popular candidate in each state then receives that state's allocation of electoral votes (which is determined by the state's population). In the majority of elections, the margin of electoral votes has been over thirty percent between the two major party candidates, and there were even some cases where the winner received over ninety percent more electoral votes than the runner-up. Biggest winners The largest margins for the Republican Party occurred in the aftermath of the American Civil War, in the pre-Depression era of the 1920s, with Eisenhower after the Second World War, and then again with the Nixon, Reagan, and Bush campaigns in the 1970s and 80s. For the Democratic Party, the largest victories occurred during the First and Second World Wars, and for Lindon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton in the second half of the 20th century. In the past six elections, the results of the electoral college vote have been relatively close, compared with the preceding hundred years; George W. From 2021 to 2023, Republicans were found much more likely than Democrats to be Protestants in the United States, with ** percent of surveyed Republicans identifying as Protestants compared to ** percent of Democrats. However, Democrats were found more likely than Republicans to identify with no religion, with ** percent of Democrats saying that they have no religious identity compared to ** percent of Republicans.

PROBLEM AND OPPORTUNITY In the United States, voting is largely a private matter. A registered voter is given a randomized ballot form or machine to prevent linkage between their voting choices and their identity. This disconnect supports confidence in the election process, but it provides obstacles to an election's analysis. A common solution is to field exit polls, interviewing voters immediately after leaving their polling location. This method is rife with bias, however, and functionally limited in direct demographics data collected. For the 2020 general election, though, most states published their election results for each voting location. These publications were additionally supported by the geographical areas assigned to each location, the voting precincts. As a result, geographic processing can now be applied to project precinct election results onto Census block groups. While precinct have few demographic traits directly, their geographies have characteristics that make them projectable onto U.S. Census geographies. Both state voting precincts and U.S. Census block groups: are exclusive, and do not overlap are adjacent, fully covering their corresponding state and potentially county have roughly the same size in area, population and voter presence Analytically, a projection of local demographics does not allow conclusions about voters themselves. However, the dataset does allow statements related to the geographies that yield voting behavior. One could say, for example, that an area dominated by a particular voting pattern would have mean traits of age, race, income or household structure. The dataset that results from this programming provides voting results allocated by Census block groups. The block group identifier can be joined to Census Decennial and American Community Survey demographic estimates. DATA SOURCES The state election results and geographies have been compiled by Voting and Election Science team on Harvard's dataverse. State voting precincts lie within state and county boundaries. The Census Bureau, on the other hand, publishes its estimates across a variety of geographic definitions including a hierarchy of states, counties, census tracts and block groups. Their definitions can be found here. The geometric shapefiles for each block group are available here. The lowest level of this geography changes often and can obsolesce before the next census survey (Decennial or American Community Survey programs). The second to lowest census level, block groups, have the benefit of both granularity and stability however. The 2020 Decennial survey details US demographics into 217,740 block groups with between a few hundred and a few thousand people. Alternative methods are left to the analyst's initiative. 50 states and the District of Columbia are in scope as those U.S. possessions voting in the general election for the U.S. Presidency. Three states did not report their results at the precinct level: South Dakota, Kentucky and West Virginia. A dummy block group is added for each of these states to maintain national totals. These states represent 2.1% of all votes cast. Counties are commonly coded using FIPS codes. However, each election result file may have the county field named differently. Also, three states do not share county definitions - Delaware, Massachusetts, Alaska and the District of Columbia. Block groups may be used to capture geographies that do not have population like bodies of water. As a result, block groups without intersection voting precincts are not uncommon. This special topic poll, fielded November 19-23, 2009, focuses on the opinions of a multitude of political matters including an oversample of respondents identifying themselves as Republican. Respondents were asked how satisfied they were with how the country's political system was working, how they felt about the Obama Administration policies, the policies offered by Republicans in Congress, and if the leadership of the Republican Party was taking the party in the right direction. Respondents were also asked whether Republicans should mainly work with the Democrats to try to get some Republican ideas into legislation or try to stop the Democratic agenda, whether they should try to stop the changes proposed by the Democrats for the country's health care system, and whether they should try to stop the changes proposed by the Democrats for the country's energy policy. They were queried on whether President Obama, the Democratic Party, and the Republican Party shared their views on most issues. They were asked if Republicans in Congress understood their problems, shared their personal values, and stood up for the core values of the Republican Party. Furthermore, they were queried on whether the Republican Party put too much emphasis on Second Amendment gun rights, same-sex marriage, abortion, federal spending, taxes, the environment, illegal immigration, the economy, and jobs. Opinions were sought on which Republican leader best reflected the core values of the Republican Party, whether religion should have a greater influence in politics and public life, how comfortable the respondent felt expressing their true feelings about politics, and whether most friends and family thought of themselves as Democrats, Republicans, or Independents. They were asked whether they would vote to re-elect Obama in 2012, for whom they would vote for in the Republican presidential primary, how much they blamed George W. Bush for current problems in the Republican Party, whether Sarah Palin had a good effect on the Republican Party, and whether the news media was fair to Sarah Palin. Respondents were queried on whether they thought television news was biased towards the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, and the Obama Administration. Information was collected on how often the respondents watched Fox News and MSNBC, and how often they listened to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. They were also queried on whether they thought abortion should be legal and whether they supported government bailouts for companies hit by the economic crisis. Demographic information includes age, race, sex, education level, religious preference, religiosity, party affiliation, voter participation, household income, and whether the respondent is a born-again Christian.

This study contains aggregate socioeconomic and demographic data as well as electoral returns for the offices of the United States President and United States Representatives for the elections of 1966-1970 for the congressional districts of the 93rd Congress. Data are provided for the number of votes cast for the Democratic candidates and the Republican candidates, the percentage of votes received by the winning party, and the total number of votes cast in the 1966, 1968, and 1970 elections for United States Representatives, as well as the total votes cast for the office of president, and the number of votes cast for each party's presidential candidate in the 1968 election. Information is also provided on housing characteristics, employment, income, poverty level, and military enrollment for the 93rd congressional districts. Demographic variables provide information on age, race, sex, marital status, education, and place of birth for the population of these congressional districts. This poll, fielded February 12-14, 2000, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President Bill Clinton and his handling of the presidency, foreign policy, and the economy. Views were sought on the condition of the national economy, the projected federal budget surplus, and the most important problem for the government to address in the coming year. Several questions asked how much attention respondents were paying to the 2000 presidential campaign, the likelihood that they would vote in the Republican or Democratic primary, which candidate they expected to win the nomination for each party, and for whom they would vote in the presidential primary and general election. Respondents were asked for their opinions of Republican presidential candidates George W. Bush, John McCain, and Alan Keyes, Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and Bill Bradley, the main reason they held a favorable or unfavorable opinion of each candidate, and the importance of a candidate's personal qualities and position on issues. Opinions were also solicited of First Lady Hillary Clinton, former President George H.W. Bush, the Democratic, Republican, and Reform parties, and how well members of the United States Congress were handling their jobs. Additional topics included abortion, campaign finance reform, and the effect of elections on the federal government. Information was also collected on the importance of religion on respondents' lives, whether they had access to a computer, Internet access, and e-mail, whether they had served in the United States armed forces, and whether they had a child graduating high school in the class of 2000. Demographic variables include sex, race, age, marital status, household income, education level, religious preference, political party affiliation, political philosophy, voter participation history and registration status, the presence of children and teenagers in the household, and type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural).
