Organic Agriculture in the United States

The exact definition of organic food differs across countries and certifiers. However, it often refers to crops grown without artificial pesticides, genetic modifications, or petroleum-based fertilizers. For meat, dairy, and eggs to be labelled as organic, the animals must not be raised on organic feed, given adequate time outdoors, and not fed growth hormones. In 2019, there was a total of approximately 22,687 certified organic farms in the United States. Roughly 69 percent of the certified organic farms were on cropland and roughly 31 percent on pasture- and rangeland.

    American consumers of Organic Food

The sales of organic food in the United States have continuously increased from 2005 to 2019. Starting with approximately 13 billion U.S. dollars in 2005, organic food sales in the United States now amount to approximately 50 billion U.S. dollars. The share of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 who rather or almost only purchase organic food is roughly 36 percent. By contrast, only 12 percent of 50-to-64-year old’s have similar purchasing habits with regards to organic food.

    Description

In 2023, the total revenue of the United States’ oil and gas industry came to 244.4 billion U.S. dollars. That was a considerable decrease from the previous year, when U.S. oil and gas had revenue peaked at 330.8 billion U.S. dollars. The advent of shale oil and gas Following the financial crisis, investors in the U.S. sought to increase domestic production and reduce dependence on foreign oil and gas in turbulent international markets. Despite high start-up costs, shale gas and tight oil became economically viable to extract as the result of new methods such as hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking). Production expanded rapidly in states with large permeable rock formations of sandstone, such as Texas and North Dakota. Surplus and instability The United States’ production of shale gas and tight oil has continued to grow uninhibitedly since 2008, leading to an oversupply by 2014. During the 2010s oil glut, output and revenue decreased as petroleum prices were destabilized worldwide. The trajectory of the gross output in the United States' oil and gas extraction industry largely precipitates the changes in total revenue, both reaching a high point in 2014 before a drastic fall the following year.

    Description

This statistic depicts organic food sales in the United States from 2005 to 2023. In 2023, organic food sales in the United States amounted to about 63.8 billion U.S. dollars.

    Organic food

Organic foods are foods that are manufactured using organic farming standards. Those agricultural standards are regulated by the department of government responsible for them and contain regulations for the cultivation of food and animal welfare. In particular, the use of chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, growth hormones and antibiotics is not allowed or only partly permitted. In addition, fewer food additives are permitted for the processing of organic foods. In the United States, organic foods are certified by the National Organic Program. Products which have fulfilled the criteria are labeled with the term ‘organic’ on the food packaging.

Organic food sales have experienced tremendous growth in the last decade. For this reason, not only specialized retailers sell organic foods but also traditional supermarkets and discounters. Widely known specialized organic retailers in the United States include Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market. Whole Foods Market is the largest specialized organic retailer in the United States with headquarters in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 1980 and operates more than 472 stores around the world.

In general, organic foods are usually offered at a higher price level than their conventional counterparts.

Among Millennials, the by now largest generation in the U.S., a sizeable share of almost 40 percent count organic food as one of their leading food priorities.

Whether or not organic foods are healthier and more nutritious compared to conventionally farmed produce is a much debated subject. Up to now, no evidence of significant differences between the two farming methods where taste or health are concerned has been established.

    Description

The Ford Motor Company reported revenue streams of nearly 185 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. This figure represents a growth in revenue of nearly five percent year-on-year. Vehicle wholesales grew from around 4.4 million units in 2023 to approximately 4.5 million units in 2024. The fiscal year end of the company is December, 31st. A challenging year for the automotive industry Though Ford's revenue appeared to trend upward from 2014 to 2018, the following years' results represented a sharp decline. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the automotive industry worldwide, and Ford was no exception: its revenue decreased 22 percent year-on-year, displaying the lowest result since the Great Recession. Despite an increase in the manufacturer's performance in 2021, the effects of the pandemic are still felt throughout its recovery. While vehicle sales started trending upwards again in the third quarter of 2020, the automotive industry was hit by different challenges in 2021: namely, the global chip shortage. The 2023 fiscal year brought its own share of hurdles for Ford, especially as strikes at its U.S. assembly plants impacted its output. Ford and the future In May 2021, Ford announced plans to expand into emerging markets, such as connected vehicles and subscription services. Moreover, the company intended to invest more than 30 billion U.S. dollars in electric vehicles through 2025 and it forecasted 40 to 50 percent of the sales volume will come from electric vehicle sales by 2030. That same month, the American automaker revealed the new electric model of its most popular F-Series pickup, the F-150. However, Ford is planning to scale back its F-150 Lightning truck production in 2024, to match up with a slowing demand for electric vehicles. In March 2023, the company established Latitude AI, to develop new automated driving technology.
