Rhodium is a precious metal that removes pollutants from vehicle exhaust fumes. In February 2020, the price of rhodium was 11,665 U.S. dollars per troy ounce. By May 2020, the price decreased to below 8,000 U.S. dollars per ounce. In April 2021, the price rose to a new high of 28,775 U.S dollars, before decreasing throughout 2022 and early 2023. By December 2024, the average price significantly decreased, reaching around 4,575 U.S. dollars per troy ounce. In comparison, the price for an ounce of rhodium was approximately 5,905 U.S. dollars in August 2022. The rarest metal: Rhodium Rhodium is a rare and precious metal that belongs to the platinum group metals (PGMs), along with platinum, palladium, osmium, iridium, and ruthenium. Due to its scarcity, it is one of the most valuable metals in the world, often exceeding the price of gold. Rhodium is extensively used in the automotive industry to manufacture catalytic converters that reduce harmful emissions. Over the last few years, even with a steady supply, Rhodium demand has risen significantly, exceeding supply due to stricter emission regulations and advancements in the automobile industry. The significance of PGMs in South Africa South Africa is rich in various natural resources, such as metals and minerals. For example, almost all of the total global reserves of PGMs are in South Africa. In 2023, PGMs generated the highest revenue share in the South African mining sector compared to other commodities, amounting to 370 billion rands.

Explore IMARC’s newly published report, titled “Rhodium Pricing Report 2024: Price Trend, Chart, Market Analysis, News, Demand, Historical and Forecast Data,” offers an in-depth analysis of rhodium pricing, covering an analysis of global and regional market trends and the critical factors driving these price movements.
The average price for rhodium in 2022 was 15,585.00 U.S. dollars per troy ounce, marking a nearly 5,000 U.S. dollars per ounce decrease in price compared to the previous years. Rhodium is a noble metal and a platinum group metal. The main use of rhodium is as an autocatalyst.
Gold and silver prices increased over the course of 2021, but these did not grow as fast as the prices of iridium and, especially, rhodium. According to a comparison of price indices, the price for rhodium - a precious metal similar to platinum and used especially in catalytic converters of cars - was ten times higher in April 2021 than it was in January 2019. The price hike for rhodium was apparently caused by coronavirus-related lockdowns implemented in South Africa, where mining companies had to close for several weeks.

Palladium increased 62.50 USD/t oz. or 7.03% since the beginning of 2025, according to trading on a contract for difference (CFD) that tracks the benchmark market for this commodity. Palladium - values, historical data, forecasts and news - updated on March of 2025.
The recycling volume of rhodium worldwide was forecast to total 370,000 ounces in 2022. This figure represents an increase of about 28 percent in comparison to the recycling volume recorded in 2013. Rhodium is a platinum group metal primarily used in the production of catalytic converters for automobiles.

Toluenes underwent selective benzylic carbon−hydrogen bond activation (BnCHA) with rhodium(III) porphyrin methyl. The ortho-, meta-, and para-substituted toluenes yielded the corresponding rhodium porphyrin benzyls in high yields in solvent-free conditions as well as in benzene solvent. Mechanistically, Rh(ttp)Me likely undergoes a σ-bond metathesis pathway. The small value of the kinetic isotope effect (2.7) indicates a bent transition state. The negative slope (−1.1) of the linear free energy relationship Hammett plot supports that the benzylic carbon builds up a positive charge in the transition state.
In 2025, the price of platinum is forecast to hover around 1,150 U.S. dollars per troy ounce. Meanwhile, the cost of per troy ounce of gold is expected to amount to 1,700 U.S. dollars.
Precious metals
Precious metals are counted among the most valuable commodities worldwide. The most well known such metals are gold, silver and the platinum group metals. A precious metal can be used as an industrial commodity or as an investment. The major areas of application include the following sectors: technology, car-making, industrial manufacturing and jewelry making. Furthermore, gold and silver are used as coinage metals, and gold reserves are held by the central banks of many countries worldwide in order to store value or for use as a redemption medium. The idea behind this procedure is that gold reserves will help secure and stabilize the countries’ respective currencies. At 8,100 tons, the United States is the country with the most extensive stock of gold. It is kept in an underground vault at the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
Russia, the United States, Canada, South Africa and China are the main producers of precious metals. Silver is the most abundant of the metals, followed by gold and palladium. Barrick Gold is the world’s largest gold mining company. The Toronto-based firm produced some five million ounces of gold in 2020. The leading silver producers include Mexico-based Fresnillo, Poland’s KGHM Polska Miedž and the mining giant Glencore. Anglo Platinum and Impala are the key mining companies to produce platinum group metals.
In 2023, Silver prices are expected to settle at around 23.5 U.S. dollars per troy ounce. It is expected to remain the precious metal with the lowest value per ounce. The price of gold is forecast to drop to around 1,663 U.S. dollars per ounce, making it the most expensive precious metal in 2023.

[Rh((R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS)]BF4 catalyzes the intramolecular hydroacylation of ketones to afford seven-membered lactones in large enantiomeric excess. Herein, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study to elucidate the mechanism and origin of selectivity in this C−H bond activation process. Evidence is presented for a mechanistic pathway involving three key steps: (1) rhodium(I) oxidative addition into the aldehyde C−H bond, (2) insertion of the ketone CO double bond into the rhodium hydride, and (3) C−O bond-forming reductive elimination. Kinetic isotope effects and Hammett plot studies support that ketone insertion is the turnover-limiting step. Detailed kinetic experiments were performed using both 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) and (R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS as ligands. With dppp, the keto-aldehyde substrate assists in dissociating a dimeric precatalyst 8 and binds an active monomeric catalyst 9. With [Rh((R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS)]BF4, there is no induction period and both substrate and product inhibition are observed. In addition, competitive decarbonylation produces a catalytically inactive rhodium carbonyl species that accumulates over the course of the reaction. Both mechanisms were modeled with a kinetics simulation program, and the models were consistent with the experimental data. Density functional theory calculations were performed to understand more elusive details of this transformation. These simulations support that the ketone insertion step has the highest energy transition state and reveal an unexpected interaction between the carbonyl-oxygen lone pair and a Rh d-orbital in this transition state structure. Finally, a model based on the calculated transition-state geometry is proposed to rationalize the absolute sense of enantioinduction observed using (R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS as the chiral ligand.
The average price for iridium in 2023 was nearly 4,700 U.S. dollars per troy ounce, an increase compared to the previous year. This figure was still lower than the peak of 5,100 U.S. dollars recorded in 2021. Iridium is a transition metal and a platinum group metal. It is one of the most corrosion-resistant metals and is also one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust.
