    Description

In the 2022/2023 crop year, China produced about 146 million metric tons of milled rice, a higher volume than any other country. India came in second place with over 135 million metric tons of milled rice in that crop year.

    Milled rice

After the rice is grown and harvested from rice paddies, it undergoes a process to prepare it for human consumption, known as milling. Milling removes the rice husk and bran layers, and the end product is the rice that can be found in your local grocery store or supermarket. The estimated total volume of milled rice produced worldwide reached over 502 million metric tons in the 2022/2023 crop year.

    Rice consumption worldwide

The top rice consuming countries are China, India, and Bangladesh in that order. In 2022/2023, China’s rice consumption amounted to over 154 million metric tons. The per capita consumption of rice worldwide has remained remarkably stable since the year 2000, and amounted to about 53.9 kilograms per year in 2018/2019.

South and East Asia are the two main regions for paddy rice production in the world. China and India are considered as the main producers of paddy rice worldwide. In 2023, India's paddy rice production amounted to over ***** million metric tons, while China's production volume slightly exceeded *** million metric tons. Paddy rice production Paddy or rough rice are the unprocessed rice kernels grown in a flooded or well irrigated field. Paddies require a maintained level of water, around 10 to 15 centimeters, for the growth part and the fields are then dried before harvesting in the sunny season. In the Asia Pacific region, China and India were the leading rice paddy producers, with a significant gap to Bangladesh in third place. Global rice market Global rice consumption has been increasing in accordance with population growth. China and India are the main consumers of rice. As of 2023/2024, the Philippines and China were the main importing countries of rice, while India and Thailand were the main exporters.

High-resolution global databases on the geographic and seasonal distribution of rice cultivation and associated methane emission, compiled by Matthews et al. (1991), have been archived for public use. These data were developed to evaluate the role of rice cultivation in the annual emission of methane from terrestrial sources. The databases represent an integration of extensive information on the cultivation of rice in all 103 rice-producing countries of the world and reflect conditions for 1984. The suite of 1-degree latitude/longitude resolution databases includes locations of rice cultivation, monthly arrays of actively growing rice areas, countries and political subdivisions, and monthly arrays of methane emission from rice cultivation.

Rice is one of the most widely consumed grains in the world. As the most populous country in the world, China also consumes more rice than any other country, with about *** million metric tons consumed in 2024/2025. Following China, India is ranked second with *** million metric tons of rice consumed in the same period. Rice production Rice requires very specific conditions in order to flourish. It must be grown in a field flooded with several inches of water, known as a paddy field. Unsurprisingly, China and India also top the list as the biggest producers of rice worldwide. Rice has such a neutral flavor that it can be integrated into almost any kind of dish, paired with virtually any flavor. In China, rice is often steamed and served alongside stir-fried meat and vegetables. Rice varieties Though there are dozens of varieties of rice grown and consumed across globe, the three most prominent types of rice are indica, japonica, and aromatic. The price index of all rice, however, has increased by over ** points since 2016.
