Globally, the gap between the richest and poorest population is widening, and United States of America is no exception. Waldo Tobler's First Law of Geography states that near things are more related than distant things, which can sometimes be seen within a map as clustering of features. Use this map to explore the distribution of households within the income extremes. The app allows the user to explore an area by typing an area of interest into the search bar. Dot density is used to represent multiple households per dot and are contained within census tract boundaries. A pop-up appears at larger scales in order to provide a chart comparing the household count for the highest and lowest income ranges. The highest income range covers households which make $200,000 or more a year. The lowest income range shows households making less than $25,000 a year. The map is shown from 36M scale to 72K scale and is designed to be displayed on the Dark Gray Canvas Basemap. The data within this map comes from Esri's Updated Demographics. The vintage of the data and boundaries is 2015.

The statistic shows the most affluent towns in the United States for every state, sorted by their median household income between 2008 and 2012. Between 2008 and 2012, Hidden Hills, California and Chevy Chase, Maryland were the two most affluent U.S. towns, with a median household income of more than 250,000 U.S. dollars.
In 2022, San Francisco had the highest median household income of cities ranking within the top 25 in terms of population, with a median household income in of 136,692 U.S. dollars. In that year, San Jose in California was ranked second, and Seattle, Washington third.
Following a fall after the great recession, median household income in the United States has been increasing in recent years. As of 2022, median household income by state was highest in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Utah, and Massachusetts. It was lowest in Mississippi, West Virginia, and Arkansas. Families with an annual income of 25,000 and 49,999 U.S. dollars made up the largest income bracket in America, with about 25.26 million households.
Data on median household income can be compared to statistics on personal income in the U.S. released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Personal income rose to around 21.8 trillion U.S. dollars in 2022, the highest value recorded. Personal income is a measure of the total income received by persons from all sources, while median household income is “the amount with divides the income distribution into two equal groups,” according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Half of the population in question lives above median income and half lives below. Though total personal income has increased in recent years, this wealth is not distributed throughout the population. In practical terms, income of most households has decreased. One additional statistic illustrates this disparity: for the lowest quintile of workers, mean household income has remained more or less steady for the past decade at about 13 to 16 thousand constant U.S. dollars annually. Meanwhile, income for the top five percent of workers has actually risen from about 285,000 U.S. dollars in 1990 to about 499,900 U.S. dollars in 2020.
According to the Hurun Global Rich List 2025, the city with the highest number of billionaires in 2025 was New York. In detail, 129 billionaires resided in the American city. Furthermore, 97 billionaires lived in London, while Shanghai had a billionaire population of 92 individuals. New York was the only city in the world with more than 100 billionaires that year. Mega-cities of the world A large number of the world’s billionaires are concentrated in a select number of the world’s mega-cities. This has as much to do with the location of their wealth, business interests, and further earning potential, as does the quality of life in those cities. A look at the most significant industries in the global billionaire production line helps to explain the prominence of the traditional capitals of global business including New York, London and Hong Kong. The place of many Chinese cities on the list can in part be explained by the strong performance of industrial conglomerates from the country in recent years. Economic growth in China While New York is the city with the highest number of billionaires, China now boasts the most billionaires of any country in the world. However, eight of the top ten wealthiest billionaires still came from the United States as of 2025.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national filewith no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line File is designed to stand alone as an independent dataset, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The Area Hydrography Shapefile contains the geometry and attributes of both perennial and intermittent area hydrography features, including ponds, lakes, oceans, swamps (up to the U.S. nautical three-mile limit), glaciers, and the area covered by large rivers, streams, and/or canals that are represented as double-line drainage. Single-line drainage water features can be found in the Linear Hydrography Shapefile (LINEARWATER.shp). Linear water features includes single-line drainage water features and artificial path features, where they exist, that run through double-line drainage features such as rivers, streams, and/or canals, and serve as a linear representation of these features.
