    Description

Represents 2020 Census Block Groups. It is the smallest geographical unit for which the bureau publishes sample data, i.e data which is only collected from a fraction of all households.Original source TIGER file data was adjusted largely along the James River to better fit the City's GIS basemapping, and along creeks and other places where the Census had essentially done a poor job of following observable features. This is a clean version of census geography and will map nicely as compared to match earlier decades' census layers that are also in the City's GIS and were "adjusted" from their earlier TIGER files.

    Description

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Face refers to the areal (polygon) topological primitives that make up MTDB. A face is bounded by one or more edges; its boundary includes only the edges that separate it from other faces, not any interior edges contained within the area of the face. The Topological Faces Shapefile contains the attributes of each topological primitive face. Each face has a unique topological face identifier (TFID) value. Each face in the shapefile includes the key geographic area codes for all geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data for both the 2020 Census and the annual estimates and surveys. The geometries of each of these geographic areas can then be built by dissolving the face geometries on the appropriate key geographic area codes in the Topological Faces Shapefile.

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Richmond, VA population pyramid, which represents the Richmond population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Richmond, VA, is 21.3.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Richmond, VA, is 19.1.
    • Total dependency ratio for Richmond, VA is 40.4.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Richmond, VA is 5.2.

    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Richmond city, VA population pyramid, which represents the Richmond city population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S.

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Richmond city, VA, is 21.3.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Richmond city, VA, is 19.1.
    • Total dependency ratio for Richmond city, VA is 40.4.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Richmond city, VA is 5.2.

Edge refers to the linear topological primitives that make up MTDB. The All Lines Shapefile contains linear features such as roads, railroads, and hydrography. Additional attribute data associated with the linear features found in the All Lines Shapefile are available in relationship (.dbf) files that users must download separately. The All Lines Shapefile contains the geometry and attributes of each topological primitive edge. Each edge has a unique TIGER/Line identifier (TLID) value.
