    Description

    Context

Competitive climbing has exploded in popularity, and with the rise of world-class events like the Olympics and World Cup, athletes are pushing the boundaries of performance in disciplines like bouldering and lead climbing. From what I have seen online this data is largely unexplored. Perhaps you could extract some interesting insights from this dataset!

    Content

This dataset was scraped from publicly available results and athlete information sourced from the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) website API. The data includes detailed athlete profiles, competition results, and event data across multiple seasons and climbing disciplines.

    • Athlete Information contains details about individual athletes, including demographics and physical attributes such as height and arm span.
    • Athlete Results tracks competition performance over time, with results segmented by event, date, and climbing discipline. Each row represents a particular athletes (athlete_id) result in a particular competition (event_id, d_cat).

    athlete_information.csv columns:

    • athlete_id: Unique identifier for each athlete.
    • first_name: Athlete's first name.
    • last_name: Athlete's last name.
    • age: Athlete's age (at time of retrieval - October 5 2024).
    • gender: Athlete's gender.
    • country: Athlete’s country of representation.
    • height: Athlete’s height (where available).
    • arm_span: Athlete’s arm span (where available).
    • paraclimbing_sport_class: null if athlete is not a paraclimber, otherwise a description of disability
    • birthday: birthday of athlete.

    athlete_results.csv columns:

    • athlete_id: Unique identifier matching to athlete_information.
    • rank: Athlete’s rank in the competition
    • discipline: Climbing discipline (eg. boulder, lead).
    • season: Year of the competition.
    • date: Date of the competition.
    • event_name: Name of the competition.
    • location: Location of the event.
    • event_id: Unique identifier for each competition event.
    • d_cat: a number indicating the division for an event_id. Grouping by event_id and d_cat will get you competitions.

This dataset is a snapshot of publicly available results provided by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). It was compiled as part of a broader project to analyze climbing performance over time. See the elo.ipynb file in the github or the corresponding kaggle notebook for my data cleaning process.

    Description

The winner of the 2024 Women's Boulder World Championship was the U.S. American athlete Natalia Grossman, having accrued more than 2,600 points in total. The second place went to Oceania Mackenzie from Australia, while the top three was completed by Mao Nakamura from Japan. What is bouldering? Bouldering is a climbing discipline that takes place at a relatively low height without the protection of a rope or harness, where bouldering mats are instead used to reduce the risk of injuries from a fall. The routes tend to involve much more powerful moves and techniques and exhibit a significant problem-solving element. In a competition, several unique boulder problems are set and each athlete is given a window of time to work out the appropriate sequence and attempt to complete the problem. Within individual bouldering competitions, points are awarded as a function of the total number of successful problem ascents, the number of attempts required on each problem, and in the event of a failure to complete a given problem, there exists specified holds that provide a bonus point. This results in an individual competition ranking from points are assigned to the athletes. Within a given World Cup series, there are usually six such individual competitions. Climbing in the Olympics In 2021, sport climbing debuted in the delayed Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, receiving international acclaim as one of the most popular additions to the Olympic portfolio in recent years. One of the reasons why climbing was so successfully incorporated into the Olympic program was the long history of professional competition sport climbing that exists within the sport. One of the most prestigious of these sport climbing competitions is the International Federation of Sport Climbing's (IFSC) World Cup series, which unlike the 2021 Olympic program, is separated into the three main disciplines: boulder, lead, and speed.
