The value of personal remittances sent to Europe increased by roughly ***** percent between 2022 and 2023, according to the latest data. This is according to estimates made by the World Bank on data from the IMF that tracked the balance of payments between countries. All figures provided here have been summed from this individual country's data. The source adds that "personal remittances" consist of both personal transfers between resident and nonresident individuals, as well as the compensation of employees. By definition, then, the numbers shown here focus on migrant workers. In the case of Europe, this could include transfers sent between European countries, such as migrant workers from Romania working in Italy. Note that consumers with a second home abroad but who receive pensions from their country of origin - for example, UK pensioners living in Spain - can sometimes also be counted as remittances.

MoneyGram was used the most for outgoing remittances from Italy in 2024, ahead of several other MTOs and bank options within the country. This is according to a custom-made calculation from Statista, based on the number of reported remittance channels going away from Italy. The three countries to which Italy sends the highest value of remittances are Romania, France, and Morocco. Remittances are a relatively uncharted topic, though. While figures exist on the total traffic between individual countries ("corridors"), exact numbers on how much of this comes from banks, money transfer organizations (MTOs), or digital sources (blockchain, etc.) is typically not known. All figures on remittances are therefore estimates.

The empirical study is based on panel data, in order to demonstrate the determinants of the remittance inflows, from the states where Romanian migrant workers sent more than 1% of Romania's total remittances during the period 2010-2017. Though these states comprise USA and Canada, we decided to perform the econometric research only for European states, due to the significant comparative difference between the mobility conditions: the migration policy of the US and Canada is selective, with a visa regime, while there are no barriers to free movement and selectivity at the level of the European states and Israel.
