In January 2023, 61 percent of survey respondents in Russia stated that they used the internet as a news source over the past month. Four years ago, that share was measured at 13 percent lower. The most popular online news channels in the country were search engines.

For around ** percent of Russians, television was the primary source of national and international news in March 2025. Social media were the second-most popular channel, as ** percent of survey participants mostly got news from there. Age divide in news consumption A significant generational gap exists in how Russians access news. While over ** percent of older Russians turn to TV, one-third of the youngest surveyed age group do the same. In contrast, social media serve as the primary news source for * out of 10 Russians aged 18 to 24 years. Overall, the share of the population mostly consuming online media was the largest among 25-to-39-year-olds. Trust in news sources Despite the rise of digital platforms, TV maintains its position as the most-trusted news source across all age groups. However, in the 18-to-24-year bracket, Telegram channels and social media have the highest level of trust, followed by TV. Among those 55 years and older, more than ** percent Russians place their trust in TV news.

However, different media resources can view the same news from different points of view, depending on the type of audience, the political orientation of the news source, the degree of freedom of speech, and other factors.

This dataset consists of news messages from verified Telegram channels of selected news media. This dataset allows the researchers to analyze the opinions, sentiments & general insights from the news sources on the different sides of the conflict.

The date of the first message in the dataset is the 24th of February 2022 - the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Inside the dataset, you'll find many kinds of information highlighting the events during the war, from propaganda to witness interviews.

There are two languages in the dataset: Russian & English.

The dataset is updated weekly on Monday.

The invasion caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 6.3 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population displaced (Source: Wikipedia).

This dataset is a collection of 407 news articles from NYT and Guardians related to ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The publishing date of articles ranges from Feb 1st, 2022 to Jul 31st, 2022.

Lenta.ru was the news website with the largest audience in Russia in August 2021. Roughly **** million Russians visited that portal at least once in that month. The second leading source was kp.ru. Several websites (such as Kp.ru, RBC.ru, or Iz.ru) belonged to brands of printed newspapers as these adjusted to the increasing internet penetration and the growing preference of the population to read news online.

Using funding from the 'Bolashaq' programme during my PhD programme in Cambridge, I commissioned four questions using omnibus surveys conducted by Levada Center between 22 October and 28 October 2020, based on a nationwide, multi-stage, stratified, and probability sample (n=1601) that represents the voting-age (+18) population of Russia. It provides the frequency of internet and social media use by Russian citizens for information about (inter)national news and politics in Russia. The survey involved 37 regional partner organizations of the Levada Center and 158 interviewers. On average, each interviewer conducted 10 interviews (from 5 to 15 interviews). The average duration of one interview was 29 minutes. For each survey point (settlement), in accordance with the instructions of the Levada Center, the starting points of the route were set with a strictly fixed step. The survey was conducted on weekdays in the evening and weekends throughout the day; thus, an equal probability of the employed and unemployed population being included in the sample was ensured.
