Deze tabel bevat de jaarmutatie van bestedingscategorieën van de consumentenprijsindex (CPI). Van elke categorie is tevens te vinden hoeveel de Nederlandse consument er aan uitgeeft in verhouding tot zijn totale uitgaven. Dit noemen we de wegingscoëfficiënt.

Daarnaast laat de tabel de bijdrage en impact van categorieën van de CPI zien. De bijdragen van de afzonderlijke categorieën tellen op naar de totale jaarmutatie en laten het aandeel zien van de prijsstijging in de jaarmutatie. De impact geeft antwoord op de vraag hoeveel hoger of lager de jaarmutatie van de CPI zou zijn als een bepaalde categorie niet voor het meten van de jaarmutatie gebruikt zou worden. De cijfers zijn in 2025 over 152 productgroepen te bekijken. Verder staan er 34 samentellingen van productgroepen (speciale aggregaten) in de tabel.

Cijfers van de CPI worden elke maand gepubliceerd. Daarnaast wordt aan het einde van het jaar een jaarcijfer bekendgemaakt. De CPI van een kalenderjaar wordt berekend als het gemiddelde van de indexcijfers van de twaalf maanden van dat jaar.

Gegevens beschikbaar vanaf: januari 2016.

Status van de cijfers: De eerste keer dat een cijfer over een verslagmaand wordt gepubliceerd, is dit een voorlopig cijfer. Bij de tweede publicatie over diezelfde maand is dit definitief. Verschillen tussen het voorlopige en het definitieve cijfer komen door nagekomen bronmateriaal.

Wijzigingen ten opzichte van de vorige versie: Er zijn gegevens over een nieuwe periode toegevoegd en/of bijstellingen doorgevoerd.

Wijzigingen per 13 februari 2025: Met ingang van verslagmaand januari 2025 wordt een prijsontwikkeling gepubliceerd voor bestedingscategorie 103000 Postsecundair niet-tertiar onderwijs. Deze indexreeks heeft december 2024 als basisperiode.

Wijzigingen per 23 januari 2025: Met ingang van verslagmaand januari 2024 wordt een prijsontwikkeling gepubliceerd voor bestedingscategorie 063000 Diensten van ziekenhuizen. Deze indexreeks heeft december 2023 als basisperiode. Vanaf verslagmaand december 2024 kan voor het eerst een jaarmutatie, bijdrage en impact worden bepaald. De cijfers van 2024 voor deze categorie zijn toegevoegd aan de tabel.

Wijzigingen per 9 juni 2022: De eenheid van de bijdrage aan de jaarmutatie en de impact op de jaarmutatie is aangepast naar 'procentpunt'. Voorheen werd hier ten onrechte 'procent' als eenheid vermeld.

Wanneer komen er nieuwe cijfers? De nieuwe cijfers worden doorgaans tussen de eerste en tweede donderdag van de maand volgend op de verslagmaand gepubliceerd. De cijfers van de voorgaande verslagmaand worden dan definitief.

Inflation who?

The inflation rate of a country is an important key factor to determine the country’s economic strength. It is calculated using the price increase of a defined product basket, containing goods and services on which the average consumer spends money throughout the year. They include, for example, expenses for groceries, clothes, rent, utilities, but also recreational activities, and raw materials (e.g. gas, oil), as well as federal fees and taxes. Some of these goods are more volatile than others – food prices, for example, are considered less reliable. The European Central Bank aims to keep inflation at around two percent in the long run.

What happened in 2016?

In 2016, South Africa’s inflation rate peaked at over 6.3 percent, and gross domestic product, and thus economic growth , took a hit, a sure indicator that something was affecting the country’s economic scaffolding: Low growth due to weak demand and an uncertain political future caused a crisis; then-President Jacob Zuma’s alleged mismanagement and unstable reign steeped in controversy and criminal charges even caused the economy’s outlook to be downgraded by ratings agencies. Zuma was relieved of his office in 2018 – ever since, inflation, GDP, and economic growth seem to have stabilized.

South Africa, a major economic player in the region, has seen its CPI score drop to a record low of 41 points in 2023, indicating a worsening corruption problem that has persisted for over a decade. Corruption's impact on public perception in South Africa The prevalence of corruption in South Africa has had a tangible effect on public sentiment. Monthly surveys conducted in the country from 2022 to 2024 reveal high levels of concern about financial and political corruption, with 45 percent of respondents expressing worry in December 2024. This concern peaked at 59 percent in February 2023, underscoring the issue's prominence in public discourse. The most common form of corruption reported in South Africa in 2023 was maladministration, which accounted for 34 percent of complaints, followed by fraud and employment irregularities.

As of 2024, an individual living in South Africa with less than 1,109 South African rand (roughly 62.14 U.S. dollars) per month was considered poor. Furthermore, individuals having 796 South African rand (approximately 44.60 U.S. dollars) a month available for food were living below the poverty line according to South African national standards. Absolute poverty National poverty lines are affected by changes in the patterns of household consumers and fluctuations in prices of services and goods. They are calculated based on the consumer price indices (CPI) of both food and non-food items separately. The national poverty line is not the only applicable threshold.
