Types of Abuse, Neglect and Financial Exploitation - A single APS case can have more than one allegation. Neglect is the failure to provide the protection, food, shelter, or care necessary to avoid emotional harm or physical injury. The alleged perpetrator of the neglect may be the victim or the victim's caregiver. There are three types of neglect allegations: Physical Neglect, Medical Neglect, and Mental Health Neglect. Other allegation types include: Financial Exploitation, Physical Abuse, Emotional or Verbal Abuse, or Sexual Abuse. The population totals do not match prior DFPS Data Books, printed or ontline. Past population estimates are adjusted based on the U.S. Census data as it becomes available. This is important to keep the data in line with current best practices, but will cause some past counts, such as Abuse/Neglect Victims per 1,000 Texas Children, to be recalculated. Population Data Source - Population Estimates and Projections Program, Texas State Data Center, Office of the State Demographer and the Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio. Current population estimates and projections for all years from 2014 to 2023 as of December 2023. Visit dfps.state.tx.us for information on all DFPS programs.

As recommended by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to ensure consistency across all HHSC agencies, in 2012 DFPS adopted the HHSC methodology on how to categorize race and ethnicity. As a result, data broken down by race and ethnicity in 2012 and after is not directly comparable to race and ethnicity data in 2011 and before. About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the population of San Antonio by gender, including both male and female populations. This dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of San Antonio across both sexes and to determine which sex constitutes the majority.

    Key observations

There is a slight majority of female population, with 50.45% of total population being female. Source: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates.

    Content

When available, the data consists of estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates.

Please note that American Community Survey asks a question about the respondents current sex, but not about gender, sexual orientation, or sex at birth. The question is intended to capture data for biological sex, not gender. Respondents are supposed to respond with the answer as either of Male or Female. Our research and this dataset mirrors the data reported as Male and Female for gender distribution analysis. No further analysis is done on the data reported from the Census Bureau.

    Description

This study describes how racial/ethnic group differences in self-neglect incidence varied across metropolitan and rural regions of Texas. The data included 134,538 cases of self-neglect validated by adult protective services among people 65+ years old from 2020 to 2023. We aggregated county population figures from US Census Bureau estimates and used negative binomial regression models to estimate the association of race/ethnicity, gender, and region type with self-neglect case counts. Self-neglect incidence among Black older adults was about twice that of White older adults, a difference that persisted across metropolitan regions. Black-White differences were more pronounced in Northwest rural regions but were absent in the El Paso region. Hispanic-White differences varied across both metropolitan and rural regions. In the Arlington region, for example, self-neglect incidence among Hispanic older adults was less than that of White older adults, whereas in San Antonio it was greater. Addressing self-neglect among Black and Hispanic older adults should anticipate that different communities may require distinct approaches. Future studies with more geographic units should build on this descriptive study to explain variation in racial/ethnic group differences in self-neglect incidence.

    Description

Allegation Disposition (Findings): Valid. Based on the standard of preponderance of the evidence, it is more likely than not that the maltreatment occurred. Invalid. Based on the standard of preponderance of the evidence, it is more likely than not that the maltreatment did not occur. Unable to Determine. A preponderance of the available evidence is insufficient to support a finding of Valid or Invalid. Other. The allegation disposition Other is used when an investigation of the allegation was not completed for some reason, e.g. clients died or cases were misclassified. Family Violence is indicated when a validated investigation has a relative perpetrator, excluding those where financial exploitation is the only confirmed allegation. Beginning in Fiscal Year 2015, services provided during the investigation are documented in the investigation stage and not in a separate service stage. The "Other" Disposition category refers to those investigations that workers could not complete, e.g. clients died or cases were misclassified. The population totals do not match prior DFPS Data Books, printed or online. Current population estimates and projections for all years from 2014 to 2023 as of December 2020. Visit dfps.state.tx.us for information on all DFPS programs.

Non-Hispanic Asian Population, Non-Hispanic Black Population, Non-Hispanic White Population, Non-Hispanic Some other race Population, Non-Hispanic Two or more races Population, Non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native Population, Non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander Population, Non-Hispanic Asian Population as Percent of Total Non-Hispanic Population, Non-Hispanic Black Population as Percent of Total Non-Hispanic Population, Non-Hispanic White Population as Percent of Total Non-Hispanic Population, and 4 more
Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) Non-Hispanic population and (b) population as a percentage of the total Non-Hispanic population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the racial categories idetified by the US Census Bureau. It is ensured that the population estimates used in this dataset pertain exclusively to the identified racial categories, and are part of Non-Hispanic classification. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.
