    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the San Francisco County, CA population pyramid, which represents the San Francisco County population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for San Francisco County, CA, is 16.3.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for San Francisco County, CA, is 24.1.
    • Total dependency ratio for San Francisco County, CA is 40.4.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for San Francisco County, CA is 4.1.

    Measurement technique
To measure the rank and respective trends, we initially gathered data from the five most recent American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates. We then analyzed and categorized the data for each of the racial categories identified by the U.S. Census Bureau. Based on the required racial category classification, we calculated the rank. For geographies with no population reported for the chosen race, we did not assign a rank and excluded them from the list. It is possible that a small population exists but was not reported or captured due to limitations or variations in Census data collection and reporting. We ensured that the population estimates used in this dataset pertain exclusively to the identified racial categories and do not rely on any ethnicity classification, unless explicitly required. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

This feature set contains household and population projections from Projections 2040 for the San Francisco Bay Region. This forecast represents household and population projections resulting from Plan Bay Area 2040. Numbers are provided by 2010 Census Tract. Household and population numbers are included for 2010 (two versions), 2015, 2020, 2025, 2030, 2035, and 2040. For 2010, two data points are provided:A tabulation (base year A) from the 2010 model simulation (base year A); and(Preferred) A tabulation (base year B) from the 2010 pre-run microdata, designed to approximate (but may still differ from) Census 2010 counts.Projection data is included for total households, total population, household population, and group quarters population. This feature set was assembled using unclipped Census Tract features. For those who prefer Projections 2040 data using jurisdiction features with ocean and bay waters clipped out, the data in this feature service can be joined to San Francisco Bay Region 2010 Census Tracts (clipped). Clipping the Census Tract features does result in the removal of some water tracts, which are usually empty, so there is a difference in the number of features between the two services.Other Projections 2040 feature sets:Households and population per countyHouseholds and population per jurisdiction (incorporated place and unincorporated county)Jobs and employment per countyJobs and employment per jurisdiction (incorporated place and unincorporated county)Jobs per Census TractFemale population, by age range, per countyFemale population, by age range, per jurisdiction (incorporated place and unincorporated county)Male population, by age range, per countyMale population, by age range, per jurisdiction (incorporated place and unincorporated county)Total population, by age range, per countyTotal population, by age range, per jurisdiction (incorporated place and unincorporated county)

    Variables measured
Hispanic Pacific Islander Population, Hispanic Pacific Islander Population as Percent of Total Population of cities in San Francisco County, CA, Hispanic Pacific Islander Population as Percent of Total Hispanic Pacific Islander Population of San Francisco County, CA

    Description

    A. SUMMARY This dataset represents all San Francisco (SF) residents who have received a vaccine for certain respiratory viruses that circulate more heavily in the fall and winter months. All vaccines given to SF residents are included, even if they received their vaccination elsewhere in California. The data are broken down by demographic and geographical stratifications.

COVID-19: This dataset represents all SF residents who are considered up to date on their COVID-19 vaccine. A person is up to date if they have received at least one dose of the 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine. The specific up-to-date criteria can be found on the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) website.

(Note: As of November 2024, this dataset only contains data regarding COVID-19 vaccinations. This documentation will be updated as other seasonal vaccination data is added).

    B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED Information on doses administered to those who live in SF is from the California Immunization Registry (CAIR2), run by CDPH. The information on individuals’ city of residence, age, race, and ethnicity are also recorded in CAIR and are self-reported at the time of vaccine administration.

In order to estimate the percent of San Franciscans vaccinated, we provide the 2018-2022 American Community Survey (ACS) population estimates for each demographic group and analysis neighborhood.

    C. UPDATE PROCESS Updated daily via automated process.

    D. HOW TO USE THIS DATASET SF population estimates for race/ethnicity and age groups can be found in a https://data.sfgov.org/Economy-and-Community/SF-COVID-19-reporting-demographics-population-esti/cedd-86uf">view based on the San Francisco Population and Demographic Census dataset. SF population estimates for analysis neighborhoods can be found in a view based on the San Francisco Population and Geography Census dataset. Both of these views use population estimates from the 2018-2022 5-year ACS.

Before analysis, you must filter the dataset to the desired stratification of data using the “vaccine_type” and "demographic_group" columns. For example, filtering “vaccine_type” to “COVID-19” will allow you to only look at rows corresponding to COVID-19 vaccinations. Filtering “demographic_subgroup” to “Analysis Neighborhood” will allow you to only look at rows corresponding to SF neighborhoods. You can then calculate the percentages of those up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations by neighborhood. The “vaccine_subtype” field provides information about the current vaccine product being tracked in this dataset.

    E. CHANGE LOG

  18. 11/5/2024 - Dataset updated to reflect up to date status for the 2024-2025 monovalent formulation of the COVID-19 vaccine.
  19. 7/2/2024 - Population estimates were updated to reflect the most recent ACS data.
