The National Center for Education Statistics' (NCES) Education Demographic and Geographic Estimate (EDGE) program develops annually updated point locations (latitude and longitude) for public elementary and secondary schools included in the NCES Common Core of Data (CCD). The CCD program annually collects administrative and fiscal data about all public schools, school districts, and state education agencies in the United States. The data are supplied by state education agency officials and include basic directory and contact information for schools and school districts, as well as characteristics about student demographics, number of teachers, school grade span, and various other administrative conditions. School and agency point locations are derived from reported information about the physical location of schools and agency administrative offices. The point locations in this data layer were developed from the 2021-2022 CCD collection. For more information about NCES school point data, see: https://nces.ed.gov/programs/edge/Geographic/SchoolLocations. All information contained in this file is in the public domain. Data users are advised to review NCES program documentation and feature class metadata to understand the limitations and appropriate use of these data.

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) provides extensive downloadable data about U.S. public schools, including basic location and contact information. The web addresses (URLs) NCES provides for these schools, however, are often in fact the URLs of the school districts of which the school is a part. In order to study the web communication practices of individual schools more precisely, then, it was necessary for us to find school-specific web sites.
To that end, we enlisted an algorithmic approach that first conducted automated web searches for each school's name and address, then sifted through the results to find the most likely candidate URL for the school's own web site. Starting from NCES data for the 2019-2020 school year, the attached dataset (n=101,517) contains the output of this procedure: rows for all U.S. public schools, with columns including basic school information from NCES, along with one additional column labeled "Website" listing the school's most likely URL as determined by our own created algorithm. School URLs have not been comprehensively verified – please use at your own discretion.

The types of data in this feature class are school names, spatial locations, addresses, and additional school details (e.g. status of operation, whether the facility is private or public,etc.). School addresses were sourced from the California Department of Education (CDE) and were geocoded using the SanGIS parcels and street centerlines. The attributes from previous School iterations were also updated using aerial imagery, online research, site visits, and over-the-phone/email verification. Certain points were manually relocated to school buildings.
