The dataset represents the boundaries of all public school districts in the state of New Mexico. The source for the data layer is the New Mexico Public Education Department School District Boundary Atlas.
This file represents a statewide compilation of the boundaries of all independent, common, and special school districts in the state of Minnesota. Minnesota school districts are asked to report any changes to their district boundaries annually. With the exception of consolidations, dissolutions, or other financial cooperation agreements, the reporting is not mandatory. As independent special purpose government organizations, school districts determine their own district & attendance boundaries, working with neighboring districts and county auditors to ensure proper taxation. The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) plays no role in determining the actual boundaries.
Since 2008, district boundaries have also been reviewed against the school district coding provided in county parcels, where it exists. (Parcel data are supplied by counties to MnGeo, who in turn share that with MDE.) The results are overall increased accuracy, but also increased complexity. Conversations with county GIS coordinators and auditors are ongoing with respect to the complex situations reflected within county parcel data, and whether or not these are accurate representations of school district boundaries. Since school year 2021, many "islands" or other unusual situations have been eliminated or simplified as a result of those conversations.
This file is not intended to represent the "true" boundaries with respect to taxation, but as generalized boundaries focused on ensuring accurate representation in residential areas. As a result, starting in 2021, boundaries have been simplified by removing complex situations in non-residential areas, such as transportation Right-of-Way (ROW), publicly-owned land, tax exempt land, or water. This simplification work is expected to continue each year.
This data is now also available in CSV format. OBJECTID and Shape columns have been removed from that format.
The 2023 cartographic boundary KMLs are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. The Census Bureau obtains the boundaries, names, local education agency codes, grade ranges, and school district levels for school districts from state officials for the primary purpose of providing the U.S. Department of Education with estimates of the number of children in poverty within each school district. This information serves as the basis for the Department of Education to determine the annual allocation of Title I funding to states and school districts. The cartographic boundary files include separate files for elementary, secondary and unified school districts. The generalized school district boundaries in this file are based on those in effect for the 2022-2023 school year, i.e., in operation as of January 1, 2023.

School districts are categorized as either elementary (primary), high (secondary) or unified based on the general grade range of the schools operated by the district. Elementary school districts provide education to the lower grade/age levels and the high school districts provide education to the upper grade/age levels while unified school districts provide education to all grade/age levels in their service areas. Boundaries for the elementary, high and unified school district layers are combined into a single file. The resulting composite layer includes areas of overlapping boundaries since elementary and high school districts each serve a different grade range of students within the same territory. The 'DistrictType' field can be used to filter and display districts separately by type.
Boundary lines are maintained by the California Department of Education (CDE) and are effective in the 2023-24 academic year . The CDE works collaboratively with the US Census Bureau to update and maintain boundary information as part of the federal School District Review Program (SDRP). The Census Bureau uses these school district boundaries to develop annual estimates of children in poverty to help the U.S. Department of Education determine the annual allocation of Title I funding to states and school districts. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) also uses the school district boundaries to develop a broad collection of district-level demographic estimates from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS).
The school district enrollment and demographic information are based on student enrollment counts collected on Fall Census Day (first Wednesday in October) in the 2023-24 academic year. These data elements are collected by the CDE through the California Longitudinal Achievement System (CALPADS) and can be accessed as publicly downloadable files from the Data & Statistics web page on the CDE website https://www.cde.ca.gov/ds.

This file represents the boundaries of all public school attendance areas in the state of Minnesota for school year 2024-25. Attendance areas attempt to represent the detailed breakdowns that determine where students attend elementary, middle, and high schools. These areas are unique to each public school system. The "dissolved" school district boundaries, without attendance area breakdowns, are available in a separate resource. For many districts that operate only a few schools, attendance area breakdowns are not used or defined; in those cases, attendance areas are equivalent to district boundaries.
Each year Minnesota public school systems are asked to report any changes to their elementary, middle and high school attendance area boundaries. This file was developed from this annual information. Users should be aware that reporting compliance is not mandatory, so the information included is only as accurate as provided by those independent, common, and special school districts. Actual decisions on where students attend which schools is entirely decided by the districts, and changes are not always reported to MDE.

Unified School Districts with district and trustee area boundaries, within the extent of Alameda County; boundaries have been updated to show changes for Oakland 2013 redistricting and new Dublin USD Trustee Areas in 2018. Boundaries represent voting districts (i.e., district designation for each address) and therefore may align with parcel boundaries in cases where parcels (and sometimes residences) are divided by the true city/district boundary.

This dataset includes boundaries for all school district boundaries within the state of Wisconsin. By law, all territory in the state must be included within a public school district. The US Census Bureau identifies three types of school districts. Unified school districts serve children of all grade levels, Elementary primarily serve students in the elementary grades, and Secondary primarily serve children in grades 9-12. Out of 421 school districts in Wisconsin, 43 are considered elementary districts, 10 are secondary districts, and 368 are unified districts. Elementary and secondary school districts overlap. This layer is an aggregate of county-submitted data for school district boundaries. Each year, there is a chance for reorganizations to take place that either transfer territory between school districts or consolidate/dissolve/create districts. These reorganizations go into effect on July 1st of each year. In 2025, there were thirteen (13) reorganizations that involved unified school districts. There weren't any reorganizations involving secondary and elementary districts. The reorganizations took place in Calumet, Dane, Dunn, La Crosse, Ozaukee, St. Croix, Sauk, and Sheboygan counties. Transfers of territory took place between the following pairs of districts: River Valley and Sauk Prairie, Plymouth and Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, Eau Claire Area and Elk Mound Area, Holman and Onalaska, Verona Area and Madison Metropolitan, River Falls and Hudson, Durand-Arkansaw and Eau Claire Area, Chilton and Stockbridge, and Grafton and Cedarburg. Please refer to the property transfer log for more information.This is not an official authoritative statewide dataset for school district boundaries nor does one exist for Wisconsin. These boundaries are updated annually around July 1 to reflect boundary changes from the reorganization process and as needed throughout the rest of the year.
