Overall, there is no significant difference between the numbers of men and women. The 55 to 59 years old age cohort exhibits the largest discrepancy with a difference of 35 people between the sexes. Furthermore, majority of the population is between the ages 55 to 59 years old, comprising 11.96 per cent of the population.
When prey experience size-based harvesting by predators, they are not only subject to selection due to larger individuals being preferentially harvested but also selection due to reductions in population density. Density-dependent selection represents one of the most basic interactions between ecology and evolution. Yet, the reduction in density associated with exploitation has not been tested as a possible driving force of observed evolutionary changes in populations harvested size-dependently. Using an artificial selection experiment with a mixture of Daphnia clones, we partition the evolutionary effects of size-based harvesting into the effects of removing large individuals and the effects of lowering the population density. We show that both size selection and density-dependent selection are significant drivers of life-history evolution. Importantly, these drivers affected different life-history traits with size-selective harvesting selecting for slower juvenile growth rates and a l...

Number of people belonging to a visible minority group as defined by the Employment Equity Act and, if so, the visible minority group to which the person belongs. The Employment Equity Act defines visible minorities as 'persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.' The visible minority population consists mainly of the following groups: South Asian, Chinese, Black, Filipino, Latin American, Arab, Southeast Asian, West Asian, Korean and Japanese.

The use of genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data has recently proven useful in the study of human population structure. We have studied the internal genetic structure of the Swedish population using more than 350,000 SNPs from 1525 Swedes from all over the country genotyped on the Illumina HumanHap550 array. We have also compared them to 3212 worldwide reference samples, including Finns, northern Germans, British and Russians, based on the more than 29,000 SNPs that overlap between the Illumina and Affymetrix 250K Sty arrays. The Swedes - especially southern Swedes - were genetically close to the Germans and British, while their genetic distance to Finns was substantially longer. The overall structure within Sweden appeared clinal, and the substructure in the southern and middle parts was subtle. In contrast, the northern part of Sweden, Norrland, exhibited pronounced genetic differences both within the area and relative to the rest of the country. These distinctive genetic features of Norrland probably result mainly from isolation by distance and genetic drift caused by low population density. The internal structure within Sweden (FST = 0.0005 between provinces) was stronger than that in many Central European populations, although smaller than what has been observed for instance in Finland; importantly, it is of the magnitude that may hamper association studies with a moderate number of markers if cases and controls are not properly matched geographically. Overall, our results underline the potential of genome-wide data in analyzing substructure in populations that might otherwise appear relatively homogeneous, such as the Swedes.

The 2021 PiT Survey began at 6:00 pm on October 2nd and continued for 24 hours. The survey was available for completion in the City of Thunder Bay at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition (CLE) which was the only public drop in site due to COVID-19. Additionally, clients staying at a variety of emergency shelter and transitional housing locations were also invited to participate at those locations. In addition, PiT Surveys were available for completion in Greenstone, Nipigon, Schreiber, Marathon, and Conmee. A total of 221 individuals completed the survey. While the number of surveys completed in 2021 (221) was less than those collected in 2018 (474), and 2016 (289) this should not be interpreted as an indication of a decrease in the homeless population in the District of Thunder Bay. Due to the presence of COVID-19, the number of locations where the public could drop in and complete the survey was reduced from the 2016 and 2018 PiT Surveys.
