    In 2023 the world merchant container ship fleet had a capacity of around 227 million metric tons deadweight. As of January 2021, there were 5,307 container ships in the world's merchant fleet.

    Container shipping and global trade As global supply networks consolidate, global value chains increase the need for seaborne transportation of goods. Container shipping is the most cost-effective and environmentally-friendly option to transport goods overseas, despite its considerable environmental footprint. The demand for more seaborne trade calls for larger vessels: the carrying capacity of the global merchant fleet has been increasing steadily during recent decades, reaching nearly two billion deadweight tons in 2020. In that same year, the seaborne trade transport volume was roughly 11 billion metric tons, up from 8 billion metric tons in 2008. Moreover, the global container shipping volume reached some 849 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2021, an increase from 622 million TEUs in 2012.

    Description

    The country layer captures the network of ports and routes that facilitate a country’s maritime trade. The includes all the exporting (either in country or in transport connected country), transhipment, and importing (at ports of bilateral trade partner) ports that facilitate a country’s maritime exports, and the importing (either in country or in transport connected country), transhipment, and exporting (at ports of bilateral trade partner) ports that facilitate for a country’s maritime imports. The Oxford Maritime Transport (OxMarTrans) model predicts the allocation of maritime trade flows (based on bilateral trade data) on the maritime transport network, including the port and route taken, to determine the dependency between ports and trade flow. In other words, it captures how trade between origin and destination is most likely being shipped across the global maritime transport network, including the port used for exporting, transhipment (if required) and importing. The resulting network consist of >2.1 million unique port-country pair combinations across >25,000 unique country pairs and 13 economic sectors, which capture what share of maritime trade between two countries going through specific ports and on specific routes. This could be because the port was exporting/importing a country’s imports/exports, or because of transhipments. This impacts can be analysed in aggregate terms (across all commodity sectors) or per commodity sector. In addition, the amount of trade at-risk is expressed as a fraction of an economy’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to capture how impactful trade disruptions are in relative terms for respective country economies. It should be noted that in most cases trade is not directly lost, but merely delayed in case of smaller disruptions (<7 days). However, in case of larger disruptions (>30 days) and limited possibilities to reroute goods, trade bottlenecks could occur, potentially resulting in severe supply shortages.     Description

    The global maritime system provides the backbone of logistics operations for global supply chains and international trade. This paper aims to develop a unifying global network representation and strategic, system-wide decision model, the Strategic Cargo Routing Model, incorporating both liner and bulk shipping markets to estimate real-world traffic flows and study traffic patterns at the global scale. Specifically, taking a shipper's perspective, containerized and bulk movements are jointly modelled within a mixed-integer linear program that includes inbound, outbound, and transshipment cargo flows at ports. An iterative approach that combines heuristic Gradient Descent and Relax-and-Fix Decomposition methods is proposed for the calibration and solution of the Strategic Cargo Routing Model over a proposed joint liner and bulk services Global Cargo Shipping Network representation. The Global Cargo Shipping Network contains 161 seaports covering 52 countries. It is created from updatable, publicly available, data sources, and all data needed for the network representation are made available. Sufficient network details, as well as data sources and methods for extracting needed inputs, are given to allow others to use and update the network. Using the developed maritime network, mathematical model and calibration-solution methodology, 2018 global maritime traffic flow patterns were estimated. The estimates were found to achieve a 91% fit overall to real-world average annual port throughputs.     Description

    This data contains quantified estimations of seaborne imports and exports (2010-2050) based on four future climate policy-related trade scenarios. The scenarios anticipate volumes and patterns of future international maritime trade consistent with high and low levels of global CO2 mitigation alongside associated climate impacts and socio-economic development hypotheses. The trade scenarios cover nearly all seaborne traded commodities transported by three main vessel types (dry bulk, wet bulk, and containers) and are quantified at country and commodity levels over decadal time steps.

    The aim of the Shipping in Changing Climates (SCC) project is to create an enduring, multidisciplinary and independent research community strongly linked to industry and capable of informing the policy making process by developing new knowledge and understanding on the subject of the shipping system, its energy efficiency and emissions, and its transition to a low carbon, more resilient future. It is a multi-university, multi-disciplinary consortium of leading UK academic institutions focused on addressing the interconnected research questions that arise from considering shipping's possible response over the next few decades due to changes in (i) climate (sea level rise, storm frequency), (ii) regulatory climate (mitigation and adaptation policy) and (iii) macroeconomic climate (increased trade, differing trade patterns, higher energy prices). Building on RCUK Energy programme's substantial investment in the Low Carbon Shipping and High Seas projects, this research provides crucial input into long-term strategic planning (commercial and policy) for shipping, in order to enable the sector to transition the next few decades with minimum disruption of the essential global services that it provides. Shipping is a global industry and its challenges must therefore be considered in a global context. The project therefore concentrates on the application of global modelling and analysis for understanding the impact of a changing global climate and associated policies. This is based on three interacting research themes: (1) ship as a system (understanding the scope for greater supply side energy efficiency), (2) trade and transport demand (understanding the trends and drivers for transport demand) and (3) transitions and evolution (understanding transport supply/demand interactions). The research undertaken is both quantitative and qualitative, applying for the first time new data and modelling techniques across the research themes.
