The Sentinel - 1 radar imaging mission is composed of a constellation of two polar-orbiting satellites providing continous all-weather, day and night imagery for Land and Maritime Monitoring. C-band synthentic aperture radar imaging has the advantage of operating at wavelenghts that are not obstructed by clouds or lack of illumination and therefore can acquire data during day or night under all weather conditions. With 6 days repeat cycle on the entire world and daily acquistions of sea ice zones and Europe's major shipping routes, Sentinel-1 ensures reliable data availability to support emergency services and applications requiring time series observations. Sentinel-1 continues the retired ERS and ENVISAT missions. Level 1 GRD products are available since October 2014.
Sentinel-1 is a pair of European radar imaging (SAR) satellites launched in 2014 and 2016. Its 6 days revisit cycle and ability to observe through clouds makes it perfect for sea and land monitoring, emergency response due to environmental disasters, and economic applications. This dataset represents the global Sentinel-1 GRD archive, from beginning to the present, converted to cloud-optimized GeoTIFF format.

Level-1 Ground Range Detected (GRD) products consist of focused SAR data that has been detected, multi-looked and projected to ground range using the Earth ellipsoid model WGS84. The ellipsoid projection of the GRD products is corrected using the terrain height specified in the product general annotation. The terrain height used varies in azimuth and it is constant in range (For IW/EW modes only the terrain height of first subswath is considered)

This dataset contains Extra Wide swath (EW) Ground Range Detected (GRD) Medium Resolution (MR) C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from the European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel 1B satellite. Sentinel 1A was launched on 25th April 2016 and provides continuous all-weather, day and night imaging radar data. The EW mode is primarily used for wide-area coastal monitoring. The EW mode supports single (HH or VV) and dual (HH+HV or VV+VH) polarisation. These data are available via CEDA to any registered user in the UK.
The Sentinel-1C satellite was launched December 5, 2024. Sentinel-1C is the the latest satellite to be added to the Sentinel-1 constellation. The Sentinel-1 satellites (Sentinel-1A, Sentinel-1B, and Sentinel-1C) are sun-synchronous polar-orbiting satellites that operate day and night performing C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. The Sentinel-1 satellites operate in four imaging modes with different resolutions (down to 5 meters) and coverage (up to 400 kilometers). The Sentinel-1 satellites provide dual polarization capability and short revisit times.
Sentinel-1C Ground Range Detected (GRD) products consist of focused SAR data that has been detected, multi-looked and projected to ground range using the Earth ellipsoid model WGS84. The ellipsoid projection of the GRD products is corrected using the terrain height and is specified in the product’s general annotation. The terrain height used varies in azimuth and it is constant in range (only the terrain height of first subswath is considered for Interferometric Wide (IW) and Extra Wide (EW) swath modes).
Ground range coordinates are the slant range coordinates projected onto the ellipsoid of the Earth. Pixel values represent detected amplitude. Phase information is lost. The resulting product has approximately square resolution pixels and square pixel spacing with reduced speckle at a cost of reduced spatial resolution.
For IW and EW GRD products, multi-looking is performed on each burst individually. All bursts in all sub-swaths are then seamlessly merged to form a single, contiguous, ground range, detected image per polarization.
The products in this collection are ISO compliant XML metadata created by the Alaska Satellite Facility Distributed Active Archive Center from the associated Sentinel-1C SAFE format product.

The Sigma0 product describes how much of the radar signal that was sent out by Sentinel-1 is reflected back to the sensor, and depends on the characteristics of the surface. This product is derived from the L1-GRD product. Typical SAR data processing, which produces level 1 images such as L1-GRD product, does not include radiometric corrections and significant radiometric bias remains. Therefore, it is necessary to apply the radiometric correction to SAR images so that the pixel values of the SAR images truly represent the radar backscatter of the reflecting surface. The radiometric correction is also necessary for the comparison of SAR images acquired with different sensors, or acquired from the same sensor but at different times, in different modes, or processed by different processors. For this Sigma0 product, radiometric calibration was performed using a specific Look Up Table (LUT) that is provided with each original GRD product. This LUT applies a range-dependent gain including the absolute calibration constant, in addition to a constant offset. Next to calibration, also orbit correction, border noise removal, thermal noise removal, and range doppler terrain correction steps were applied during production of Sigma0. The terrain correction step is intended to compensate for distortions due to topographical variations of the scene and the tilt of the satellite sensor, so that the geometric representation of the image will be as close as possible to the real world.

DE Africa’s Sentinel-1 backscatter product is developed to be compliant with the CEOS Analysis Ready Data for Land (CARD4L) specifications. The Sentinel-1 mission, composed of a constellation of two C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, are operated by European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the Copernicus Programme. The mission currently collects data every 12 days over Africa at a spatial resolution of approximately 20 m. Radar backscatter measures the amount of microwave radiation reflected back to the sensor from the ground surface. This measurement is sensitive to surface roughness, moisture content and viewing geometry. DE Africa provides Sentinel-1 backscatter as Radiometrically Terrain Corrected (RTC) gamma-0 (γ0) where variation due to changing observation geometries has been mitigated. The dual polarisation backcastter time series can be used in applications for forests, agriculture, wetlands and land cover classification. SAR’s ability to ‘see through’ clouds makes it critical for mapping and monitoring land cover changes in the wet tropics.

This dataset provides seven Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scenes covering a portion of the Madeira River in Brazil from Porto Velho to Abuna. Each scene has been pre-processed for the use of detecting artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) riverine dredges. The scenes were collected from the ASF search vertex (https://search.asf.alaska.edu/#/) as L1 Detected High-Res Dual-Pol (GRD-HD) products. They were acquired using a C-band SAR with the Interferometric Wide Swath (IW) mode, VV and VH polarizations, and a temporal resolution of 6 days. Each SAR acquisition covers a 250 km swath; however, these have been clipped to the study area. They have a 20 m x 22 m (ground range x azimuth) resolution, a 10 m x 10 m pixel spacing, and an Equivalent Number of Looks (ENL) of 4.4. The data is collected in ascending and descending passes; although, only descending passes were available in the study area. Four of the dates (20190604, 20190616, 20190628, and 20190710) required two sce ...
