The ckanext-dara extension enhances CKAN's metadata capabilities by integrating the da|ra metadata schema, enabling registration of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). Developed for the ZBW Journal Data Archive, this extension simplifies the process of metadata input and DOI registration, making it more accessible for researchers and editors who publish research data. It aims to strike a balance between ease of use and providing sufficient metadata for data findability and reproducibility. Key Features: da|ra Metadata Schema Integration: Implements a subset of the da|ra metadata schema within CKAN, allowing for structured metadata input specific to research data. DOI Registration: Facilitates the registration of DOIs for datasets at da|ra directly from within the CKAN interface. Simplified Metadata Input: Focuses on a smaller, more manageable set of metadata fields to reduce the burden on users submitting data. External Metadata Retrieval: Integrates with external services like ORCID and GND to automatically retrieve author metadata, pre-filling certain fields. Repeating Fields: Implements a feature to allow for multiple entries in certain metadata fields, such as adding multiple authors. XML Validation: Uses XML validation to ensure the metadata conforms to the da|ra schema making sure the entries follow a certain standard. Test server functionality: Allows you to use the da|ra test server as an alternative to test and develop features. Technical Integration: The ckanext-dara extension customizes CKAN's dataset forms and adds specific (meta-)data for compatibility with the da|ra schema using plugins. Metadata fields are based on ckanext.dara.schema and processed in plugin.py. The widgets are constructed as objects and handled by Jinja macros. The integration is designed to customize dataset forms within CKAN to accommodate the da|ra metadata fields. Benefits & Impact: ckanext-dara makes CKAN a more suitable tool for research data management by providing schema-based metadata input and DOI registration. This improves the findability, linking, and reproducibility of research data published through CKAN, benefitting both data publishers and consumers. This promotes consistency in data cataloguing.
