    Description

This table presents economic data for the environmental goods and services sector by activity. It contains data on labour volume, output, gross value added and export of the environmental goods and services sector. Output, gross value added and export are measured in basic prices and labour volume is measured in full time equivalents (fte). The environmental activities are assigned to an environmental domain (environmental protection and/or management of natural resources).

The economic data are presented in the following quantities: -Labour volume, 1000 fte -Output at basic prices, mln Euro -Gross value added at basic prices, mln Euro -Export at basic prices, mln Euro

The environmental goods and services sector consists of companies and institutions that are involved in activities with respect to measuring, preventing, limiting, minimalizing or correcting environmental damage to water, air and soil as well as problems related to waste, noise and ecosystems (OECD, 1999; Eurostat 2009). This definition includes 'cleaner technologies 'and 'cleaner goods and services' which reduce environmental risk and minimize the use of natural resources and pollution. The definition of the environmental goods and services sector is determined on European level and it is used by EU-countries accordingly.

The environmental goods and services sector is part of de Dutch system of environmental accounts, which brings together economic and environmental information in a common framework. The Dutch environmental accounts are compiled following the general concepts, definitions and classifications as described in SEEA 2012 and the 2008 SNA. As it is in line with de definitions and classifications of the national accounts system, there exists a small difference between environmental accounts and environmental statistics. More information on the methodology can be found elsewhere on the website of CBS.

    Description

In June 2025, the UK inflation rate for goods was 2.4 percent and 4.7 percent for services. Prices for goods accelerated significantly, sharply between 2021 and 2022, before falling in 2023. By comparison, prices for services initially grew at a more moderate rate but have also not fallen as quickly. The overall CPI inflation rate for the UK reached a recent high of 11.1 percent in October 2022 and remained in double figures until April 2023, when it fell to 8.7 percent. As of this month, the UK's inflation rate was 3.6 percent, up from 3.4 percent in the previous month. Sectors driving high inflation In late 2024, communication was the sector with the highest inflation rate, with prices increasing by 6.1 percent as of December 2024. During the recent period of high inflation that eased in 2023, food and energy prices were particular high, with housing and energy inflation far higher than in any other sector, peaking at 26.6 percent towards the end of 2022. High food and energy prices since 2021 have been one of the main causes of the cost of living crisis in the UK, especially for low-income households that spend a higher share of their income on these categories. This is likely one of the factors driving increasing food bank usage in the UK, which saw approximately 3.12 million people use a food bank in 2023/24, compared with 1.9 million just before the COVID-19 pandemic. The global inflation crisis The UK has not been alone in suffering rapid price increases since 2021. After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a series of economic and geopolitical shocks had a dramatic impact on the global economy. A global supply chain crisis failed to meet rising demand in 2021, leading to the beginning of an Inflation Crisis, which was only exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The war directly influenced the prices of food and energy, as both countries were major exporters of important crops. European imports of hydrocarbons from Russia were also steadily reduced throughout 2022 and 2023, resulting in higher energy prices throughout the year.

    Description

This table presents economic data for the environmental goods and services sector by industry. It contains data on labour volume, output and gross value added of the environmental goods and services sector. Output and gross value added are measured in basic prices and labour volume is measured in full time equivalents (fte). The environmental activities can be subdivided to industries and assigned to an environmental domain; environmental protection and/or management of natural resources. In this table only those business that execute environmental activities as primary or secondary activities are classified to economic industry. The economic data are presented in the following quantities: -Labour volume, 1000 fte -Output at basic prices, mln Euro -Gross value added at basic prices, mln Euro -Export at basic prices, mln Euro The environmental goods and services sector consists of companies and institutions that are involved in activities with respect to measuring, preventing, limiting, minimalizing or correcting environmental damage to water, air and soil as well as problems related to waste, noise and ecosystems (OECD, 1999; Eurostat 2009). This definition includes 'cleaner technologies 'and 'cleaner goods and services' which reduce environmental risk and minimize the use of natural resources and pollution. The definition of the environmental goods and services sector is determined on European level and it is used by EU-countries accordingly. The environmental goods and services sector is part of de Dutch system of environmental account, which brings together economic and environmental information in a common framework. Data available from: 2001 Status of the figures: Provisional figures. Changes as of 4 July 2023: Year 2020 and 2021 has been added. The figures about earlier years have been adjusted following a change in the business population belonging to the environmental goods and services sector. Changes as of 2 April 2021: Year 2017, 2018 and 2019 has been added. The figures about earlier years have been adjusted following a change in the business population belonging to the environmental goods and services sector. Changes as of 16 November 2018: Year 2014 has been added. Figures about earlier years have been adjusted following a change in the business population belonging to the environmental goods and services sector. VITAL SIGNS INDICATOR Jobs by Industry (EC1)

FULL MEASURE NAME Employment by place of work by industry sector

    LAST UPDATED July 2019

DESCRIPTION Jobs by industry refers to both the change in employment levels by industry and the proportional mix of jobs by economic sector. This measure reflects the changing industry trends that affect our region’s workers.

DATA SOURCE Bureau of Labor Statistics: Current Employment Statistics 1990-2017 http://data.bls.gov

    CONTACT INFORMATION vitalsigns.info@bayareametro.gov

METHODOLOGY NOTES (across all datasets for this indicator) The California Employment Development Department (EDD) provides estimates of employment by place of work and by industry. Industries are classified by their North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code. Vital Signs aggregates employment into 11 industry sectors: Farm, Mining, Logging and Construction, Manufacturing, Trade, Transportation and Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, Professional and Business Services, Educational and Health Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Government, and Other. EDD counts all public-sector jobs under Government, including public transportation, public schools, and public hospitals. The Other category includes service jobs such as auto repair and hair salons and organizations such as churches and social advocacy groups. Employment in the technology sector are classified under three categories: Professional and Business Services, Information, and Manufacturing. The latter category includes electronic and computer manufacturing. For further details of typical firms found in each sector, refer to the 2012 NAICS Manual (http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?chart=2012).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides industry estimates for non-Bay Area metro areas. Their main industry employment estimates, the Current Employment Survey and Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, do not provide annual estimates of farm employment. To be consistent, the metro comparison evaluates nonfarm employment for all metro areas, including the Bay Area. Industry shares are thus slightly different for the Bay Area between the historical trend and metro comparison sections.

The location quotient (LQ) is used to evaluate level of concentration or clustering of an industry within the Bay Area and within each county of the region. A location quotient greater than 1 means there is a strong concentration for of jobs in an industry sector. For the Bay Area, the LQ is calculated as the share of the region’s employment in a particular sector divided by the share of the nation’s employment in that same sector. Because BLS does not provide national farm estimates, note that there is no LQ for regional farm employment. For each county, the LQ is calculated as the share of the county’s employment in a particular sector divided by the share of the region’s employment in that same sector.

    Description

This data has been revised since publication. Please see DCMS Sectors Economic Estimates: Trade 2022 and 2023 for the latest estimates from 2016 to 2023.

    Headline findings

In included DCMS sectors in 2021:

Goods: Exports were greater than imports, unlike the UK economy as a whole. Compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic), trade in goods accounted for a lower proportion of total UK trade in goods.

Services: Exports were greater than imports, like the UK economy as a whole. Compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic), trade in services accounted for a higher proportion of total UK trade in services.

The creative industries sector contributed the most to the value of goods and services imported and exported.

Tourism: UK residents spent more overseas (imports) than overseas visitors spent in the UK (exports).

In the digital sector in 2021:

Goods: Exports were lower than imports, like the UK economy as a whole.

    About

These economic estimates are official statistics used to provide an estimate of the contribution of DCMS sectors and the digital sector to the UK economy, measured by imports and exports of goods and services. Trade in tourism is estimated by spending by overseas residents in the UK and spending by UK residents overseas as proxy measurements for exports and imports.

    Content

These statistics cover the contributions of the following sectors to the UK economy.

    DCMS sectors:

    • creative industries
    • cultural sector
    • gambling (services only)
    • sport
    • tourism (covered on a separate basis to the other sectors)

Users should note that there is overlap between DCMS sector definitions and that several cultural sector industries are simultaneously creative industries.

Estimates of civil society imports and exports are not available at present, due to a lack of suitable data.

The release also includes estimates for the audio visual sector. These do not form part of the DCMS total.

A definition for each sector is available in the tables published alongside this release. Further information on DCMS sectors is available in the associated technical report along with details of methods and data limitations.

    Digital sector:

    • digital sector
    • telecoms (services only)

Users should note that there is overlap between these two sectors’ definitions in that the Telecoms sector sits wholly within the digital sector.

Estimates are published here separately for the digital sector (including the telecoms sector) as responsibility for these policy areas now sits with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

    Released

These statistics were first published on 3 August 2023.

    Changes to this page

We have made the following changes to this data since publication:

    • On 18 August 2023: section 4.1 of the DCMS sectors economic estimates: Trade, 2021 main report was revised to correct a minor error in the commentary.

    • 10 November 2023: due to the identification of an error, the DCMS and digital sector Economic Estimates trade in services data tables were removed and re-published with a reduced breakdown for 2021 while the error was being investigated.

    • 14 March 2024: the DCMS trade in services tables have been re-published with breakdowns for 2021, including both sectors and subsectors.

    • 24 May 2024: The DCMS and digital sector trade in services tables have been further updated and re-published to include revised 2021 and 2020 data.
