About this dataset

Context

The dataset tabulates the population of White Earth by gender across 18 age groups. It lists the male and female population in each age group along with the gender ratio for White Earth. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of White Earth by gender and age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group for both Men and Women in White Earth. Additionally, it can be used to see how the gender ratio changes from birth to senior most age group and male to female ratio across each age group for White Earth.

Scope of gender :

Please note that American Community Survey asks a question about the respondents current sex, but not about gender, sexual orientation, or sex at birth. The question is intended to capture data for biological sex, not gender. Respondents are supposed to respond with the answer as either of Male or Female. Our research and this dataset mirrors the data reported as Male and Female for gender distribution analysis.

The Second World War had a sever impact on gender ratios across European countries, particularly in the Soviet Union. While the United States had a balanced gender ratio of one man for every woman, in the Soviet Union the ratio was below 5:4 in favor of women, and in Soviet Russia this figure was closer to 4:3.

As young men were disproportionately killed during the war, this had long-term implications for demographic development, where the generation who would have typically started families in the 1940s was severely depleted in many countries.

Alaska had the highest male to female ratio in the United States in 2020, with ***** men for every 100 women. The male to female ratio was lowest in the District of Columbia, with **** men for every 100 women. The Second World War severely altered the demographic composition of many countries, particularly in terms of gender ratios across certain age groups. For age groups below 14 years, there is little observable impact of the war on gender ratios, however, some countries see a drastic change across older generations, particularly in the Soviet Union. For men in their twenties (i.e. those in their late-teens or early-twenties when the war began), the ratio drops from 98 men per 100 women in the 15-19 age group, to 68 men per 100 women in the 25-29 group.

In addition to the Second World War, these figures are affected by trends in nature and other historical events. For example, women tend to have higher overall life expectancies than men, which typically sees gender ratios widen among older generations. The impact of the First World War is also most-observable in France's gender ratios for those aged in their fifties. Additionally, the gap in ratios remains high for the Soviet Union across older age groups due to the impact of the First World War and the famine of the early 1930s, however the figures for Russia itself are even lower as it was disproportionately affected by the Russian Revolution and famine of the 1920s.

Gender ratio, or sex ratio, is the ratio of males to females in a population.The human gender ratio is of particular interest to anthropologists and demographers. In human societies, however, sex ratios at birth may be considerably skewed by factors such as the age of mother at birth, and by sex-selective abortion and infanticide. The US CIA estimates that the current world wide sex ratio at birth is 107 boys to 100 girls, though during the late 1990s there was concern that the ratio of males to females was declining too rapidly. The gender or sex ratio in China has been a contentious issue since the introduction of the one-child policy in 1979, intended to limit the population of the country. Although the policy is no longer in place, the population gender difference throughout the country is still evident. In 2023, fifteen to nineteen-year-old children had the largest gender disparity of 115.3 males to every 100 females. Gender imbalance While the difference of gender at birth has been decreasing in the country over the past decade, China still boasts the world’s most skewed sex ratio at birth at around 110 males born for every 100 females as of 2023. That means there are about 31 million more men in the country than women. This imbalance likely came from the country’s traditional preference for male children to continue the family lineage, in combination with the population control policies enforced. Where does that leave the population? The surplus of young, single men across the country poses a risk for China in many different socio-economic areas. Some of the roll-on effects include males overrepresenting specific labor markets, savings rates increasing, consumption reducing and violent crime increasing across the country. However, the adult mortality rate in China, that is, the probability of a 15-year-old dying before reaching age 60, was significantly higher for men than for women. For the Chinese population over 60 years of age, the gender ratio is in favor of women, with more females outliving their male counterparts.

Worldwide, the male population is slightly higher than the female population, although this varies by country. As of 2024, Hong Kong has the highest share of women worldwide with almost ** percent. Moldova followed behind with around ** percent. Among the countries with the largest share of women in the total population, several were former Soviet states or were located in Eastern Europe. By contrast, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman had some of the highest proportions of men in their populations.

In terms of population size, the sex ratio in the United States favors females, although the gender gap is remaining stable. In 2010, there were around 5.17 million more women, with the difference projected to decrease to around 3 million by 2027.

In 2019, there were more women than men in all three of those areas, but Jackson, Missouri was the metro area with the highest share of female population.

The sex ratio among those enrolled in secondary education worldwide stood at **** points in 2020. Between 1970 and 2020, the ratio rose by **** points, though the increase followed an uneven trajectory rather than a consistent upward trend.

The human sex ratio at birth (SRB) is approximately 107 boys for every 100 girls. SRB was rising until the World War II and has been declining slightly after the 1950s in several industrial countries. Recent studies have shown that SRB varies according to exposure to disasters and socioeconomic conditions. However, it remains unknown whether changes in SRB can be explained by observable macro-level socioeconomic variables across multiple years and countries. Here we show that changes in disposable income at the macro level positively predict SRB in OECD countries. A one standard deviation increase in the change of disposable income is associated with an increase of 1.03 male births per 1000 female births. The relationship is possibly nonlinear and driven by extreme changes. The association varies from country to country being particular strong in Estonia. This is the first evidence to show that economic and social conditions are connected to SRB across countries at the macro level. This calls for further research on the effects of societal conditions on general characteristics at birth.
