This dataset is the result of studies conducted during phase one (NSF-funded) of the Realities of Academic Data Sharing (RADS) Initiative, based out of the Association of Research Libraries. Studies were conducted with federally-funded researchers and institutional administrators who support data sharing practices within their department or unit at the following institutions: Cornell University, Duke University, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Virginia Tech, and Washington University in St. Louis. The 2022 RADS studies were retrospective, investigating data sharing and management activities and support services from 2013 to 2022. Two surveys were utilized to collect data, the Institutional Infrastructure Survey for administrators and the Researcher Survey for federally-funded researchers. The researcher survey charted the current practices for preservation, sharing, and reuse of digital data in the field of humanities and health sciences. The survey also charted the respondents' views on open access and the reuse of digital research data, as well as their opinions on how to most effectively spread information about open access and research data management. The survey was a part of the FSD's "National Service Provider for CESSDA: Establish, Expand, Equip" project, in which services are tailored specifically for humanities and health sciences. The project was funded by the Academy of Finland. The questionnaire began with general questions charting the respondents' knowledge about open access and the services provided by the FSD. Next the respondents' views were probed on how digital research data is used at their department/school/unit after research has been completed. The respondents were then asked about barriers relating to archiving and reuse of digital research data as well as the restrictions presented by removal of personal identifiers from data in their field of study. Furthermore, the respondents were asked which factors contribute to the fact that data from completed research projects is not reused in their field of study. In the next part, the respondents were asked about their opinions on how to restrict the use of datasets if doing so was necessary. Next the respondents were thoroughly interviewed about their views on the advantages and disadvantages of increasing the reuse of digital data. Finally, the respondents were asked which channels and methods would be good for sharing information about research data management and open access. There are two CSIRO Data Access Portal (DAP) surveys reported in the workbook, (1) a survey of depositors to the DAP, and (2) a survey of DAP withdrawers (users). Each of these were conducted under CSIRO Social Science Human Research Ethics Committee Approval: project 055/16 “Data Access Portal – costs and benefits for depositors and users”.
(1) The survey of depositors involved semi-structured interviews with depositors of research data collections on the DAP. This group were entirely composed of researchers within CSIRO. Depositors were interviewed using guiding questions which are presented here and in Appendix A of the report. A total of 15 data depositors from a wide variety of research disciplines accepted invitations and were interviewed. Because the interviews were semi-structured, not all questions were answered by respondents; the corresponding cells have been left blank. The interviews were conducted exclusively over the phone for a period of 30 minutes, during April 2016. In order to maintain their anonymity, some responses and some sections of responses have been removed. In these instances, a "YYYYY" will appear in the cell or text to indicate redaction.
(2) The survey of withdrawers (users) of the DAP involved a structured online survey with a focus on eliciting their assessment of the value of the data collections they were using. Withdrawers were presented with questions reported here and in Appendix B of the report. The survey was administered using a Survey Monkey application, to which a link was presented in a banner on the DAP webpage inviting users to participate. Banner advertising text: “Please help us understand the value of data in the Data Access Portal - to take part in our survey please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/529MT2P”. The survey captured responses from 23 users over the period October 2016 - February 2017.
