Abstract The aim of this work was to analyze the statistical graphs included in the two most frequently series of textbooks used in Costa Rica basic education. We analyze the type of graph, its semiotic complexity, and the data context, as well as the type of task, reading level required to complete the task and purpose of the graph within the task. We observed the predominance of bar graphs, third level of semiotic complexity (representing a distribution), second reading level (reading between the data), work and school context, reading and computation tasks and analysis purpose. We describe the differences in the various grades and between both editorials, as well as differences and coincidences with results of other textbook studies carried out in Spain and Chile.

Figures in scientific publications are critically important because they often show the data supporting key findings. Our systematic review of research articles published in top physiology journals (n = 703) suggests that, as scientists, we urgently need to change our practices for presenting continuous data in small sample size studies. Papers rarely included scatterplots, box plots, and histograms that allow readers to critically evaluate continuous data. Most papers presented continuous data in bar and line graphs. This is problematic, as many different data distributions can lead to the same bar or line graph. The full data may suggest different conclusions from the summary statistics. We recommend training investigators in data presentation, encouraging a more complete presentation of data, and changing journal editorial policies. Investigators can quickly make univariate scatterplots for small sample size studies using our Excel templates.

R, a programming language, is an attractive tool for data visualization because it is free and open source. However, learning R can be intimidating and cumbersome for many. In this report, we introduce an R package called “smplot” for easy and elegant data visualization. The R package “smplot” generates graphs with defaults that are visually pleasing and informative. Although it requires basic knowledge of R and ggplot2, it significantly simplifies the process of plotting a bar graph, a violin plot, a correlation plot, a slope chart, a Bland-Altman plot and a raincloud plot. The aesthetics of the plots generated from the package are elegant, highly customisable and adhere to important practices of data visualization. The functions from smplot can be used in a modular fashion, thereby allowing the user to further customise the aesthetics. The smplot package is open source under the MIT license and available on Github (https://github.com/smin95/smplot), where updates will be posted. All the example figures in this report are reproducible and the codes and data are provided for the reader in a separate online guide (https://smin95.github.io/dataviz/).

Abstract: This study analyzes the responses given by 332 8th grade Portuguese students to two questions, one with data set defined by a frequency table and the other defined by a bar graph. The goal is the evaluation of the effect of the data representation on the calculation of the median. Using a combined methodology, a frequency analysis of students' response types and a semiotic analysis of responses, based on onto-semiotic approach of knowledge and mathematics education, were applied. The semiotic analysis' main goal was the identification of objects and mathematical processes, which can characterize semiotic conflicts implied from the student responses. Generally, students revealed greater tendency to not respond to the graphic determination of the median, however, those who do answer, tend to obtain the median with less difficulty in a graphic context. Semiotic conflicts seem not to depend on the presentation of the data set, although there are more answers that are incorrect in the tabular context than in the graphic context.

This bar chart shows the annual frequency of barbecues in France in 2016. More than 30 percent of respondents had between 12 and 24 barbecues a year, compared to five percent who made more than 50 barbecues.
The data comes from the Harvard Dataverse and covers information regarding political trust & regime support in China and self-monitoring, which determines the participants' desire for social desirability. Authors Nicholson and Huang obtained the data via a standard survey experiment that contains an embedded list experiment. The list experiment aspect is significant because list experiments are an "indirect way to gauge overreporting" (Nicholson and Haung). The data have possibilities for helping understand Chinese politics, such as how support varies at different government levels and how overreporting is affected by a person's social desirability. This data can be used in government classes and coding classes. The data should be used when learning about ordered logit and simple bar graphs. A regression should not be used. It could be used to compare the levels of trust in different regime types. It would be interesting to compare the results of other authoritarian countries, such as Turkey and Vietnam, to the results of these datasets from China. Additionally, data from these countries could be compared to democracies. People underreport in authoritarian governments and might not always tell the truth, so there is a chance that authoritarian countries could have similar levels of reported trust to the democratic countries. This experiment is also a list experiment, which reduces some of the underreporting. The data can be used to see whether certain demographic characteristics have more or less support for their government. Examples of demographic characteristics that could be looked at are gender, age, and education level.

Between 1879 and 1910, most of modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina (then known as Hercegovina) was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The data has been shown in a bar graph as the intervals are inconsistent, however from looking at the data we can see that the population grew gradually over this 31 year period, from 1.16 million people in 1879 to 1.90 million in 1910. Perhaps the most surprising thing in the graph is the disparity between the ratio of men to women. From 1885 to 1910 there is almost 100 thousand more men than women in Bosnia Hercegovina, although it is not clear whether this is an error in the data collection process, or a natural abnormality.
