    Description

In 2023, the amount of electricity consumed in Singapore reached about ** thousand gigawatt hours. Singapore consumes a large amount of electricity to power the city's infrastructure and economy. The industrial sector consumed the largest amount of electricity with a share of around ** percent. The Singapore electricity market The electricity sector is regulated by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). This institution operates under the Ministry of Trade and aims to promote effective competition in the energy market. As of June 2022, Tuas Power Generation Pte had the largest share of the energy, followed by Senoko Energy and YTL PowerSeraya. However, up until 2001, all consumers had to buy electricity at a regulated tariff. In 2001, EMA started to slowly liberalize the market. To better meet the demands of Singaporean consumers, they launched the Open Electricity Market in April 2018, with a soft launch in Jurong. This allowed households and businesses to decide from which retailer and at what price they wanted to buy their electricity. This program was then expanded at a national level in late 2018. Today, the consumer can choose between the regulated tariffs or an individual solution.
