    Description

    This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in England and Wales by sex and single year of age. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021.

    The classifications for the datasets TS009 Sex by single year of age and RM200 Sex by single year of age (detailed) are the same. However, RM200 has data available at the lower geographies of:

    • Lower layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs)
    • Middle layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs)
    • Electoral wards and divisions
    • Westminster parliamentary constituencies

    Estimates for single year of age between ages 90 and 100+ are less reliable than other ages. Estimation and adjustment at these ages was based on the age range 90+ rather than five-year age bands.

    Area type

    Census 2021 statistics are published for a number of different geographies. These can be large, for example the whole of England, or small, for example an output area (OA), the lowest level of geography for which statistics are produced.

    For higher levels of geography, more detailed statistics can be produced. When a lower level of geography is used, such as output areas (which have a minimum of 100 persons), the statistics produced have less detail.     Lower and Middle Super Output Area populations by single year of age for both current and previous boundaries. Data for previous boundaries has been apportioned by the Greater London Authority. Areas that have merged were calculated using proportions from previous Mid-year population estimates (pre-revision) and applying it to the current estimates.

    The LSOA atlas provides a summary of demographic and related data for each Lower Super Output Area in Greater London. The average population of an LSOA in London in 2010 was 1,722 compared with 8,346 for an MSOA and 13,078 for a ward. The profiles are designed to provide an overview of the population in these small areas by combining a range of data on the population, diversity, households, health, housing, crime, benefits, land use, deprivation, schools, and employment. Due to significant population change in some areas, not all 2011 LSOA boundaries are the same as previous LSOA boundaries that had been used from 2001. A lot of data is still only available using the 2001 boundaries therefore two Atlases have been created - one using the current LSOA boundaries (2011) and one using the previous boundaries (2001). If you need to find an LSOA and you know the postcode of the area, the ONS NESS search page has a tool for this. The LSOA Atlas is available as an XLS as well as being presented using InstantAtlas mapping software. This is a useful tool for displaying a large amount of data for numerous geographies, in one place (requires HTML 5). CURRENT LSOA BOUNDARIES (2011) NOTE: There is comparatively less data for the new boundaries compared with the old boundaries PREVIOUS LSOA BOUNDARIES (2001) For 2011 Census data used in the 2001 Boundaries Atlas: For simplicity, where two or more areas have been merged, the figures for these areas have been divided by the number of LSOAs that used to make that area up. Therefore, these data are not official ONS statisitcs, but presented here as indicative to display trends. NB. It is currently not possible to export the map as a picture due to a software issue with the Google Maps background. We advise you to print screen to copy an image to the clipboard.     Description

    This dataset provides population estimates for the lower layer super output areas (LSOAs), middle layer super output areas (MSOAs), upper layer super output areas (USOAs) and local authorities in Wales. These estimates are consistent with the results of the 2011 Census and are available for the 2011 LSOA, MSOA and USOA geographic boundaries published in October 2012. Super output areas (SOAs) were introduced in 2004 to improve the reporting of small area statistics. They are built from groups of census output areas, are of a consistent size and are not subject to boundary changes between censuses. Where possible they are formed from groups of socially similar households and align with local features such as roads and railway lines. The comparability and stability of the geography is a key benefit to users of statistics which cannot be provided by other small area administrative geographies such as wards or parishes. Following the 2011 Census, some boundary changes to SOAs were required and the new set of SOA boundaries was published in October 2012, although the stability of the geography has been largely maintained. Three hierarchical levels of SOAs are available in Wales. LSOAs were designed to have a population of between 1,000 and 3,000 in 2011, and there are 1,909 of them in Wales. MSOAs were designed as aggregations of LSOAs, had a population of between 5,000 and 15,000 in 2011, and there are 410 of them in Wales. USOAs are aggregations of MSOAs and were defined in conjunction with local authorities in Wales. There are 94 of them in Wales and they are only defined in Wales. This data does not differ from that published in the separate table (POPU1015), but it is presented using a different hierarchy to allow the user to more easily select the data from a single layer of the geography (for example, selecting only the lower super output areas, without the other area types).     Data are extracted as a quarterly snapshot in time from the GP Payments system maintained by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). This release is an accurate snapshot as at 1 April 2015. Since April 2014, geographical references have been taken from 2011 census information. At GP Practice level data are released in single year of age bands and 5-year age bands both of which finish at 95+, split by gender and aggregated. At Clinical Commissioning Group, NHS England Area Team and NHS England Region levels, data are released in 5-year age bands which now finish at 95+, split by gender and aggregated. For the above reports, the data for GP Practices with 100 or fewer registered patients has been suppressed due to possible identification of individuals when data are linked to other data sets. Data for GP practices at Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level are provided by gender but not by age bands so no suppression is required. An additional machine readable version is provided in practice / LSOA /totals format. Further information on LSOA is available via the link below.

    Data for this publication are extracted each month as a snapshot in time from the Primary Care Registration database within the PDS (Personal Demographics Service) system. This release is an accurate snapshot as at 1 June 2025. GP Practice; Primary Care Network (PCN); Sub Integrated Care Board Locations (SICBL); Integrated Care Board (ICB) and NHS England Commissioning Region level data are released in single year of age (SYOA) and 5-year age bands, both of which finish at 95+, split by gender. In addition, organisational mapping data is available to derive PCN; SICBL; ICB and Commissioning Region associated with a GP practice and is updated each month to give relevant organisational mapping. Quarterly publications in January, April, July and October will include Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) populations.

    Description

    The Area Level Index of Age Diversity (ALIAD) is based on the Simpson's Index of Diversity. It is commonly used in ecological studies to quantify the biodiversity of a habitat as it takes into account both the richness, i.e. the number of species present, and the evenness, i.e. the abundance of each species, within an environment. As species richness and evenness increase, so diversity increases. The index represents the probability that two randomly selected individuals will belong to different groups. It ranges from 0 and 100, with higher values representing greater diversity. ALIAD was computed for each Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) in England and Wales (E&W), each Data Zone (DZ) in Scotland and each Super Output Area (SOA) in Northern Ireland from 2002 to 2019. It is based on the mid-year population estimates (MYPE) for each area for each year. This is information is freely available in accordance with version 3.0 of the Open Government Licence. However, the different national statistical agencies compute MYPE for different age groups. In England and Wales estimates are provided for single-year age groups, i.e. the number of people aged 0, 1, 2, 3, etc. In Scotland estimates are provided for quinary age groups, i.e. the number of people aged 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, etc. In Northern Ireland (NI) estimates are provided for four larger age groups, i.e. 0-15, 16-39, 40-64 and 65+. It was decided to match the age groups to the NI classification as i) this would provide the greatest geographical coverage, ii) the estimates ought to be more robust and iii) in discussions with policy and practice stakeholders these age groups were seen as more meaningful than single-year or quinary age groups. An exact match was possible between the E&W and NI age groups. However, because of the use of quinary age groups it is not possible to get an exact match for all age groups in Scotland. Hence, the age groups used on Scotland are 0-14, 15-39, 40-64 and 65+.
    The final dataset contains the computed ALIAD values for each of the 34,753 LSOAs, the 6,976 DZs and the 890 SOAs from 2002-2019. ALIAD has a range of 0-100. On this scale 0 would represent total age concentration, i.e. every member of the area is in the same age group, and 100 would represent complete age diversity within the area.

    There is evidence that Britain is becoming more and more generationally divided. A major part of this is that the places where we live have become increasingly 'age segregated'. This means younger people tend to live in places where there are more younger people and older people tend to live in places where there are more older people. Deep generational divisions can have implications for social cohesion and effective societal functioning. Policy makers are concerned that this could have negative health, economic, social and political costs. Indeed, a recent report by the Resolution Foundation estimated that age-segregation could cost the UK economy £6 billion per year. However, there is currently no research in Britain that has been able to directly test whether living in areas with a greater mix of ages has an impact on people. By linking information on the number of people in different age groups at the local level with information from a long running survey, our project will be the first to do this. We will create a new measure, called the 'area level index of age diversity', for all the residential areas in Great Britain (these are called Lower Super Output Areas in England and Wales and Data Zones in Scotland). Unlike existing measures which tend to focus just on younger versus older adults, this new measure will use information from people of all ages to get a better idea of the mix of age groups in an area. The first thing we intend to do with this information is to produce a series of maps of Britain to show which local areas are more or less age diverse. This information will be very useful for local government, councils, city planners and the like. Once we have done this, we will then link our new measure of age diversity to information on around 50,000 people living in Britain who have been part of a long running study (called the UK Household Longitudinal Survey). This will enable us to see whether living in areas that have people from a wide (or narrow) range of age groups impacts on people's health (e.g. whether the person has an illness or chronic condition), well-being (e.g. loneliness), civic participation (e.g. whether someone volunteers or not), and neighbourhood quality (e.g. whether people trust their neighbours). Our findings will provide a much needed evidence base on the extent of local area level age diversity in Britain and what effect (if any) this has on people's lives.

    This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in England and Wales by sex, and by age. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021.

    Estimates for single year of age between ages 90 and 100+ are less reliable than other ages. Estimation and adjustment at these ages was based on the age range 90+ rather than five-year age bands. Read more about this quality notice.

    Area type

    Census 2021 statistics are published for a number of different geographies. These can be large, for example the whole of England, or small, for example an output area (OA), the lowest level of geography for which statistics are produced.

    For higher levels of geography, more detailed statistics can be produced. When a lower level of geography is used, such as output areas (which have a minimum of 100 persons), the statistics produced have less detail. This is to protect the confidentiality of people and ensure that individuals or their characteristics cannot be identified.

    Lower tier local authorities

    Lower tier local authorities provide a range of local services. There are 309 lower tier local authorities in England made up of 181 non-metropolitan districts, 59 unitary authorities, 36 metropolitan districts and 33 London boroughs (including City of London). In Wales there are 22 local authorities made up of 22 unitary authorities.

The following geographical aggregations were discussed: • Water Supply Zone (WSZ) - Limits interoperability with other datasets • Postcode – Some postcodes contain very few households and may not offer necessary anonymisation • Postal Sector – Deemed not granular enough in highly populated areas • Rounded Co-ordinates – Not a recognised standard and may cause overlapping areas • MSOA – Deemed not granular enough • LSOA – Agreed as a recognised standard appropriate for England and Wales • Data Zones – Agreed as a recognised standard appropriate for Scotland Data Triage Review Frequency Annually unless otherwise requested Publish FrequencyAnnuallyData Specifications • Each dataset will cover a year of samples in calendar year • This dataset will be published annually • Historical datasets will be published as far back as 2016 from the introduction of The Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2016 • The determinands included in the dataset are as per the list that is required to be reported to the Drinking Water Inspectorate. • A small proportion of samples could not be allocated to an LSOA – these represented less than 0.1% of samples and were removed from the dataset in 2023. • The postcode to LSOA lookup table used for 2022 was not available when 2023 data was processed, see supplementary information for the lookup table applied to each calendar year of data. Context Many UK water companies provide a search tool on their websites where you can search for water quality in your area by postcode. The results of the search may identify the water supply zone that supplies the postcode searched. Water supply zones are not linked to LSOAs which means the results may differ to this dataset. Some sample results are influenced by internal plumbing and may not be representative of drinking water quality in the wider area.     Description

    This dataset contains a summary measure of the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 at local authority district level. It puts the 326 Local Authority Districts into a rank order based the population weighted average rank of all LSOAs in the LAD. A rank of 1 is the most deprived.

    The English Indices of Deprivation provide a relative measure of deprivation at small area level across England. Areas are ranked from least deprived to most deprived on seven different dimensions of deprivation and an overall composite measure of multiple deprivation. Most of the data underlying the 2010 indices are for the year 2008.

    The Indices are designed for small areas, but one way of summarising relative deprivation at local authority level is by calculating the average rank of the LSOAs within it.

    For the IMD and each domain, the summary measure is calculated by averaging all of the LSOA ranks in each local authority district. For the purpose of calculation, LSOAs are ranked such that the most deprived LSOA is given the rank of 32,482. The LSOA ranks are population weighted within a local authority district to take account of the fact that LSOA size can vary. (For simplicity in summarising the domains, the same total population size is used for all domains.) Finally the LADs are ranked according to the average rank of the LSOAs, from 1 to 326 where 1 is the most deprived.

The outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to changes in the work of General Practices and subsequently the data within this publication. Until activity in this healthcare setting stabilises, we urge caution in drawing any conclusions from these data without consideration of the country's circumstances and would recommend that any uses of these data are accompanied by an appropriate caveat.
