This dataset contains data from the main and supplementary questionnaire of the round 5 of the European Social Survey conducted in Lithuania. Data set was created by organization which implemented the survey - UAB „RAIT“, and then data was prepared by national coordinator of ESS in Lithuania and employees of Lithuanian Data Archive of HSS (LiDA). The European Social Survey (ESS) is a survey initiated by academics and widely spread across nations - more than 30 different European states have been already surveyed. There are three main aims of this study: to trace and interpret changing attitudes and values of Europe's society and to observe how it interacts with shifting European institutions, to create and improve progressive methods of intercultural surveys performance in Europe and in world, to create a collection of European social indicators which will include provision indexes. The fifth round of the survey was conducted in 28 countries when adapting very strict methods of survey implementation. The research was funded by Seventh Framework Programme of European Commission, European Science Foundation, science research offices of United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Austria and (or) municipalities and national institutions in different countries which performed outdoors research. The research was pursued by following principles of random probability selection forming only and using strictly defined protocols of questionnaire evaluation because the aim was to get feedback of 70 %. Respondents were answering to regular questions which were repeated in every wave of main questionnaire and also to questions that were prepared to each wave by different group of scientists in 1 hour long direct interview. Two variable blocks of questions were included in fifth wave - "Trust in Police and Court" and "Work, Family and Wellbeing". At the end respondents answered to questions (includes human values) of additional questionnaire and questions validity of main questionnaire, also to questions that are testing reliability. This dataset was created using version 3.0 of the integrated data file of countries participating in the ESS Round 5 (Lithuanian data) published in the ESS Data Archive on 2012-12-18.

The purpose of the study: to investigate the attitudes of Lithuanian population about the most important political, social and economic issues during the rapid transformation of society and state. Major investigated questions: respondents were asked how the year was like for them and how their standard of living had changed. They were asked questions to assess the current economic situation in Lithuania and what respondents think will be the economic situation in Lithuania after 12 months. Also, the respondents assessed their current economic situation (their family) and the material situation of the respondents (their family) after 12 months respectively. The question was asked whether in 1992 in Lithuania the economic situation will increase, decrease or will be the same as in 1991. The question was posed whether World War was likely to break out in the next 10 years. It was asked whether 1992 will be better, worse or the same as in 1991. It was asked in which of the Baltic countries the most successful economic reforms are taking place and what the respondents think about the current “launch” of prices in Lithuania. Questions were asked whether respondents purchased more meat and its products compared to the previous month. Respondents were also asked whether they liked coffee and whether they drank when coffee became more expensive. It was wanted to know how the activities of the Supreme Council of Lithuania and the Government correspond to the interests of the people. The opinion was also asked on how V. Landsbergis performs the duties of the Chairman of the Supreme Council, and G. Vagnorius - the duties of the Prime Minister of Lithuania. Residents of Lithuania who participated in the survey were asked to answer whether Lithuania currently needs a president elected by all its citizens. Attitudes towards people who have not yet been punished for crimes committed during and after Stalinist repression have been studied. Respondents were asked whether they would like to have a personal weapon. At the end of the survey, it was wanted to find out on which step the respondents stand on the 9-step stairs. The purpose of the study: to ascertain Lithuanian residents opinion about quality and accessibility of social services in the country, satisfaction with work of official authorities and society they live in. Major investigated questions: it was questioned how satisfied respondents are with their current life and if the things respondents do in their lives are worthwhile. Respondents were asked if they felt happy and if they felt anxious yesterday. Respondents were asked to describe the quality of life in Lithuania compared to the average of the European Union countries; current situation compared to 12 months ago and to indicate their expectations for the next 12 months. It was analysed if the life of those who are children today will be easier, more difficult or about the same as the life of those from respondents generation. Respondents were asked if most people can be trusted, or that they can’t be too careful in dealing with people and if most people would try to take advantage of others if they got the chance, or would they try to be fair. It was questioned if most of the time people try to be helpful or that they are mostly looking out for themselves. It was analysed how much respondents trust in the Seimas, the legal system, the police, the press, political parties and politicians. It was questioned how satisfied respondents are with the kind of society they live in. Further, respondents were asked how satisfied they are with the present state of the economy, work of Lithuania's government and with the way democracy works in Lithuania. Socio-demographic characteristics: gender, age, duration of education, education, employment status of the respondent and his / her husband / wife / permanent partner, profession (occupation), respondent's trade union membership, religion, participation in religious rites, political views, political and social activism, voting in the last Seimas elections, nationality, household size, respondent's average and total average monthly household income, marital status, place of residence, satisfaction with quality of life, change in living conditions, received social benefits, received financial support from abroad living relatives.

The purpose of the study: assess knowledge of the German population about Lithuania and its inhabitants. Major investigated questions: respondents were asked whether they heard about Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, whether they know much about these countries and could name their capitals, and finally whether they would like to visit these countries. Further, the questions were only related to Lithuania. It was wanted to know how much the respondents know about Lithuania and with which region they would most likely associate this country. Those who think that Lithuania is not worth a trip or who have doubts about visiting Lithuania were asked to give their reasons in group of questions. After a group of questions, respondents that formerly visited Lithuania were asked to answer what made them visit Lithuania, what they liked and what they did not like about the country. When asked to imagine that they were planning to visit a European country, and after being asked a group of questions, it was wanted to know what would have the most influence on such a decision. Respondents were asked to rate whether Lithuania's membership in the EU, NATO and the OECD was a positive or negative thing. Next, respondents rated the groups of statements about Lithuania. It was clarified whether they had seen the campaign "Lithuania. Real is beautiful". They were asked to answer which of the listed tourist attractions or activities would be interesting for them if they were to visit another country. It was investigated which positive and negative descriptions best describe Lithuanians. At the end of the survey, questions were asked about how often respondents travel abroad (including all types of travel: work, weekends, holidays) and who usually travels abroad with them. The purpose of the study: assess how Lithuanian population perceive their own and the country's identity and how the country's people evaluate Lithuania. Major investigated questions: respondents were asked whether are they proud to be a Lithuanian citizens; do they agree with the statements that Lithuania's economy is growing fast, that it is a modern country, country with many outstanding sportsmen, that it is politically stable and attractive country for tourism; that nice and friendly people live in Lithuania which is also attractive for investment; has very rich cultural heritage and little corruption. Respondent's opinion on Lithuania's relationship with 24 EU Member States, Belarus and Kaliningrad Region was probed. Socio-demographic characteristics: gender, age, education; membership in trade unions, occupation, position, size of workplace, monthly family income per one family member, place of residence.
