A large number of small forests typically harbor higher biodiversity than a small number of large forests totaling the same area, suggesting that small patches are disproportionately valuable for biodiversity conservation. However, policies often favor protection of large forest patches. Here we demonstrate a global trend of higher deforestation in small than large forest patches: the likelihood that a randomly-selected forest plot disappeared between 1992 and 2020 increased with decreasing size of the forest patch containing that plot. Our results imply a disproportionate impact of forest loss on biodiversity relative to the total forest area removed. Achieving recent commitments of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework will require revision of current policies and increased societal awareness of the importance of small habitat patches for biodiversity protection. Living vertebrates vary drastically in body size, yet few taxa reach the extremely minute size of some frogs and teleost fish. Here we describe two new species of diminutive terrestrial frogs from the megadiverse hotspot island of New Guinea, one of which represents the smallest known vertebrate species, attaining an average body size of only 7.7 mm. Both new species are members of the recently described genus Paedophryne, the four species of which are all among the ten smallest known frog species, making Paedophryne the most diminutive genus of anurans. This discovery highlights intriguing ecological similarities among the numerous independent origins of diminutive anurans, suggesting that minute frogs are not mere oddities, but represent a previously unrecognized ecological guild.

This study is based on the GEE platform, combined with Sentinel-2 satellite data, using image normalization technology to enhance the recognition of smaller islands, and using support vector machine classification algorithm to extract ecological information from global islands. Using global island vector data provided by the United States Geological Survey, the Institute for Environment and Natural Resources, and the United Nations Environment Programme's World Conservation Monitoring Center as island boundaries, a total of 269391 small islands were selected for ecosystem classification. The dataset contains 1599 blocks and a color mapping table. The data size is 16.1GB. Island ecosystems are divided into five categories: water bodies, vegetation, urban areas, shallow reefs, and bare land. However, in this dataset, the water bodies were subjected to null value processing, resulting in only four classifications presented in the dataset. The TIF images extracted from this dataset can be viewed, read, and statistically analyzed using remote sensing software such as ENVI, Arc GIS, QGIS, etc.
