    Description

This statistic shows the food and drink sales of bars and taverns in the United States from 2009 to 2017. Sales of U.S. bars and taverns were forecasted to rise to approximately 19.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2017.

    Restaurant industry - additional information

Unsurprisingly, one of the most commonly alcoholic consumed beverages in U.S. bars and taverns is beer. Around half of the alcohol consumed in the United States falls into the beer category and spirit consumption makes up about one third. Each year, nearly 200 million beer barrels are sold to U.S. bars and taverns.

Despite the health risks associated with drinking alcohol, it is consumed in large amounts worldwide. The average per capita pure alcohol consumption in the United States was 8.7 liters between 2008 and 2010, according to the World Health Organization. Belarus was the country with the second highest per capita alcohol consumption worldwide in 2016. Its population above the age of 15 years consumed 16.4 liters of pure alcohol per capita that year.

That said, recent statistics show that food and drink sales of snack and non-alcoholic beverage bars in the United States are much higher than those that serve alcohol. Food and drink sales of snack and non-alcoholic beverage bars have risen since 2009 and the National Restaurant Association projects that they will reach 38.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2016.

    Description

This statistic shows the food and drinks sales of eating and drinking places in the United States from 2009 to 2017. Sales of eating and drinking places were forecasted to rise to approximately 551.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2017.

Eating and drinking places include full-service and limited-service restaurants, cafeterias, grill-buffets, buffets, snack and non-alcoholic beverage bars, social caterers and bars and taverns.

Restaurants in the U.S. - additional information

The restaurant industry in the United States is a large contributor to the country’s economy, providing hundreds of thousands of jobs and generating billions of dollars each year. As of fall 2015, there were more than 620 thousand restaurants in the U.S., including full service, limited service, independent and chain restaurants. Food and drink sales in eating and drinking places exceeded 527 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. The wider restaurant industry, which includes, among other establishments, retail, mobile, non-commercial and lodging food services, was forecasted to generate more than 700 billion dollars in food and drink sales in 2015.

The largest portion of food and drinks sales in the U.S. restaurant industry is generated by full service restaurants. Full service restaurants are what some may think of as traditional restaurants – sit-down restaurants with full table service, ranging from casual to fine dining. This segment was expected to make 220 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. The second largest contributor is limited service, or quick service, restaurants. Typically referred to as fast food restaurants, U.S. limited service restaurants make up the largest industry of its type worldwide.

Despite the health risks associated with it, fast food is very popular in the U.S., with more than 20 percent of consumers visiting quick service restaurants at least weekly. An August 2014 survey found that chicken sandwich chain Chick-Fil-A was America’s favorite global fast food chain.

    Description

Consumer sentiment, disposable income levels and drinking habits impact spending on drinking establishments, including pubs, bars, nightclubs and coffee shops. Europe is known for its well-established drinking culture, which varies from country to country. Beer and wine consumption are very popular on the continent, with many countries also major producers of these beverages. However, alcohol consumption per capita in Europe is on a downward trend, hindering demand for drinking establishments. Meanwhile, coffee shops benefit from resilient demand amid a thriving coffee culture on the continent. Industry revenue is expected to expand at a compound annual rate of 5.8% to €100.6 billion over the five years through 2025, including a 0.1% drop in 2025. The industry is driven by Europe’s deep-rooted culture of socialising, vibrant nightlife and evolving urban lifestyles. Climbing health consciousness, particularly among younger demographics, is shaping the industry’s performance, weakening per capita alcohol consumption levels across most European countries. Consumers are reducing their alcohol intake or completely cutting it off due to the health benefits of staying sober, presenting challenges to venues that rely on alcohol sales. This shift has forced many establishments to diversify their offerings, adding more non-alcoholic options and high-quality snacks. In the aftermath of the pandemic, the hurdle of surging inflation deterred spending on going out and drinking. Many consumers have since turned to beverages offered at supermarkets as off-trade alcohol prices are lower, hindering revenue over the three years through 2025. Intense competition from supermarkets and restaurants has pressured prices, hindering revenue and profit growth. This, paired with higher operational costs, has weighed on profitability. Industry revenue is forecast to swell at a compound annual rate of 3.7% to €120.4 billion over the five years through 2030. An improving European economy will bolster consumer sentiment and disposable incomes, fuelling spending on on-premise drinking. Premiumisation is set to be an emerging trend, with consumers willing to pay more for craft, high-quality beverages, as well as memorable experiences and entertainment. However, subdued levels of alcohol consumption per capita and escalating competition will limit revenue growth. To combat competition and keep up with changing consumer preferences, drinking establishment operators will have to broaden their offerings, dabbling in more varied non-alcoholic beverage options. Those that fail to do so will struggle in the increasingly competitive market.

The objective of the National Neighborhood Data Archive (NaNDA) is to create measures of neighborhood context that impact clinical, social, and psychological health and healthy aging outcomes. This dataset contains measures of the number and per capita density of fast-food restaurants per United States census tract from 2006 through 2015. Fast-food restaurants are those classified as “limited-service restaurants” under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS code 722513). According to the NAICS website, code 722513 “comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing food services (except snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars) where patrons generally order or select items and pay before eating.” Examples include pizza delivery shops, fast-food restaurants, and takeout sandwich shops.
