    Description

Abstract Research on social entrepreneurship still lacks theoretical depth, as well as the analysis of the antecedents that lead to the emergence of social enterprises. Seeking to advance such discussion, this paper aims to analyze if and how the conceptual model for analysis of social entrepreneurship antecedents proposed by Jiao in 2011 is empirically supported. Thus, semi-structured interviews with ten Brazilian social entrepreneurs were conducted. From the results, the existence of a new antecedent not described in the conceptual model developed by Jiao was identified, and a framework for analysis of the antecedents that lead to the emergence of social enterprises is being proposed in this paper. The framework elaborated from cases present in an emerging economy that has several social problems also points to analytical inconsistencies in Jiao’s model. Besides allowing the theoretical advance about the initial stage of social enterprises formation, this paper also contributes presenting relations that help minimize the theoretical misunderstanding about the conceptualization of social entrepreneurship, generating a clarified definition. In addition, an agenda with directions for future research on social enterprises and social entrepreneurship is proposed.

    Description

This collection contains anonymized survey data collected from 1350 responding Social Enterprises in all Canadian provinces and territories, with the exception of Quebec. The surveys were conducted in 2014 and 2015. For the purposes of these surveys, social enterprises were defined as follows: "A social enterprise is a business venture owned or operated by a non-profit organization that sells goods or provides services in the market for the purpose of creating a blended return on investment, both financial and social/environmental/cultural". The purpose of the surveys, and of making the data available, is to support the development of the social enterprise sector in Canada by highlighting the size, scope and impact of social enterprises. Funding for the surveys has included the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Institute for Community Prosperity, Mount Royal University, Enterprising Non-Profits Canada, the TRICO Foundation of Calgary, and Employment and Social Development Canada, and generous local sponsors and supporters. These surveys have been undertaken with the tremendous support, dedication and enthusiasm of provincial umbrella groups that want to see social enterprises develop and flourish in Canada. Without these organizations this initiative would not have been possible. The collections consists of 11 SPSS-format Data Files, 11 excel-format Variable Keys and 10 pdf-format Questionnaires. Geographical information for each individual file can be found in item_metadata.csv. The researchers who created this dataset would be pleased to hear from you and how you have used this data (pvhall@sfu.ca and pelson@uvic.ca). Software used was SPSS. Confidentiality declaration: Use of this anonymized survey microdata has been approved by the SFU Research Ethics Board. Survey respondents were assured that their names would be kept confidential, as would the individual answers they provide. Hence all identifying variables, as well as open-response text fields and almost all financial data (except total revenue and expense) have been deleted. This dataset was originally deposited in the Simon Fraser University institutional repository.

    Description

Abstract The text aims to highlight different attributes related to the concept of social enterprise, to contribute to the specification of possible uses. It starts from the following question: what notions qualify the variety of meanings attributed to practices linked to the expression social enterprise? The notion of social enterprise derives from the questioning about the limits of exclusively economic, monetary-based initiatives, regarding the capacity to respond to social demands, it represents, to a certain extent, the resurgence of experiences that mobilize varied purposes between economic and social logic. However, the extension of the notion of social enterprises in the world has been open to different and even conflicting interpretations, between an Anglo-Saxon version, a classic European version and a Latin American and a renewed European version (Laville, Young & Eynaud, 2014). It is under such bias that the term may occur, in different contexts, as social business, third sector, social economy or solidarity economy, as we have pointed out here.

    Description

Rural social enterprises are organizations that utilize market-oriented strategies to fulfill social objectives within regional and rural settings, particularly in addressing persistent issues like poverty and inequality. Their performance is inadequately researched in the rural context, particularly in developing countries where their contributions to overcoming intractable challenges are most needed. This study contributes to addressing these research gaps by developing a model for assessing internal critical success factors (CSFs) that influence social enterprise performance, and testing it in an empirical investigation of the influence of selected CSFs – entrepreneurial orientation, social salience and business planning on the performance of rural social enterprises. A survey of 521 Ugandan rural social enterprises provided data which was analysed using structural equation modelling and importance performance map analysis. Results reveal that entrepreneurial orientation and business planning are critical to rural social enterprises’ performance, and that business planning mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance. For practitioners and policymakers, these findings suggest that entrepreneurial orientation, social salience, and business planning are critical to the performance of rural social enterprises. Further, findings support rural social enterprises’ use of their entrepreneurial orientation to improve financial performance while also advocating for and increasing social performance. We advance social entrepreneurship research by employing the CSF concept in conjunction with other frameworks, and by developing and quantitatively validating a concise model consisting of internal CSFs based on measurement scales. We assess the psychometric properties of these scales and analyse their influence on the performance of rural social enterprises. These findings provide direction for rural social enterprise scholars, practitioners, advocates, and policymakers.

Social Business Intelligence (BI) Market Outlook

The global Social Business Intelligence (BI) market is set to witness significant growth, with the market size expected to surpass USD 15.2 billion by 2023 and projected to reach approximately USD 35.8 billion by 2032, reflecting a robust CAGR of 9.8% throughout the forecast period. This impressive growth is primarily driven by the increasing adoption of data-driven decision-making processes across various industries, fueled by the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. Moreover, the integration of social media analytics into business intelligence solutions is offering new avenues for organizations to glean actionable insights, thereby boosting the overall demand for social BI solutions.

One of the key growth factors propelling the Social BI market is the surge in social media usage across the globe. Businesses are leveraging data from platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to gain insights into consumer behavior, preferences, and trends, which are invaluable for strategic planning. The ability of Social BI tools to analyze unstructured data from social media and transform it into structured, actionable insights is empowering businesses to enhance their customer engagement strategies, optimize marketing campaigns, and stay ahead in the competitive landscape. This increased focus on customer-centric approaches and personalized marketing is expected to significantly contribute to market growth.

Another major driver is the growing need for real-time analytics in business operations. In today's fast-paced world, organizations are increasingly reliant on the ability to make quick and informed decisions. Social BI solutions provide real-time data analytics capabilities that enable businesses to monitor and respond to social media trends as they occur. This real-time insight is crucial for mitigating risks, managing brand reputation, and maintaining a competitive edge. Furthermore, advancements in cloud computing have facilitated the deployment of social BI solutions, making them more accessible and scalable, thus further propelling market expansion.

The increasing integration of AI and machine learning technologies into Social BI solutions is also a significant growth factor. These advanced technologies enhance the capabilities of BI tools by enabling more sophisticated data analysis and predictive analytics. This integration allows businesses to anticipate market trends, automate data processing, and generate deeper insights from complex datasets. As a result, companies are increasingly investing in Social BI solutions to harness the power of AI-driven analytics for strategic decision-making, leading to a substantial increase in market demand.

Regionally, North America is expected to dominate the Social BI market due to the early adoption of advanced technologies and the presence of major industry players in the region. The Asia Pacific region, however, is projected to witness the highest growth rate during the forecast period. This can be attributed to the rapid digital transformation, increasing social media penetration, and growing adoption of cloud-based solutions in countries like China, India, and Japan. The region's robust economic growth and expanding IT infrastructure further contribute to the market's potential in Asia Pacific.

    Component Analysis

In the Social BI market, the component segment is primarily divided into software and services. The software component is expected to hold the largest market share, driven by the increasing demand for advanced analytical tools that can harness data from social media platforms. Social BI software solutions offer a wide range of functionalities, including data visualization, dashboard creation, and predictive analytics, which are essential for businesses to interpret and act upon social data effectively. The growing emphasis on digital transformation across industries has led to a surge in demand for comprehensive software solutions that facilitate seamless integration with existing business processes.

On the other hand, the services segment, which includes consulting, implementation, training, and support services, is anticipated to grow at a significant rate. As organizations increasingly adopt Social BI tools, the need for expert guidance in selecting the right solutions and optimizing their implementation becomes critical. Service providers play a vital role in ensuring that businesses can fully leverage the benefits of Social BI technologies, leading to increased demand for professional services. Furth

    Description

Final Performance Evaluation of the USAID/Jamaica Social Enterprise Boost Initiative (SEBI) The purpose of this evaluation of the Social Enterprise Boost Initiative (SEBI) is to determine whether the SEBI activity achieved its objectives and gain lessons for implementation of ongoing or future programs. The evaluation sought to identify: 1) implementation challenges, corrective actions to project management, and progress towards achieving expected results; 2) the factors that contributed to the success/failure of the different project components; 3) the effect of the activity on men and women; and 4) the extent to which SEBI contributed to the local social enterprise (SE) policy environment. The evaluation will serve to inform the United States Agency for International Development Jamaica Mission’s (USAID/Jamaica) Local Partner Development (LPD) program under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) as well as the Social Enterprise Jamaica (SEJA), which is in the process of being registered as a non-governmental organization (NGO), with a view to continuing some of the work of SEBI once the project ends in December 2018. The exact nature of SEJA’s activities is unclear, although the Evaluation Team (ET) understands that the focus could primarily be on incubation services for SEs under the LPD program. SEBI was initiated by the Jamaica National Foundation (JNF) and jointly funded by JNF and USAID. The rationale for USAID’s decision to support SEBI in Jamaica, implemented by (JNF), was based on several important factors at the time, namely: 1) low levels of business competitiveness and productivity; 2) a stagnant economy; 3) a high debt burden; and 4) high levels of crime in the country. The genesis of SEBI was in JNF’s observation that not-for-profit and other organizations operating in the social sector were struggling to deliver their core services mainly due to a reliance on grants and donations. The underlying goal therefore was to introduce the social enterprise model to these organizations so that they could start generating their own income and become less reliant on grants and donations. SEBI began in July 2012 and is due for completion at the end of December 2018, following three extensions agreed in Modifications 2, 3, and 5 in the Cooperative Agreement (CA). The ET pursued three separate, yet interlinked, data collection activities that formed the basis of its methodological approach to conducting the SEBI evaluation as follows: 1. Face-to-face meetings on site with SEBI’s incubator and accelerator beneficiary clients as well as representatives from key stakeholders, including national and local government, the private sector, international community, civil society, NGOs, and business associations and agencies. In total, the ET met with 29 beneficiaries (20 incubators and 13 accelerators) and 30 stakeholders. Team members used semi-structured questionnaires to record answers for later comparative analysis and cross-reference purposes with findings from the other data collection methods, mentioned below. 2. The ET hosted four focus group discussions (FGDs) in the parishes (Trelawny, St. James, Westmoreland and Manchester) and one in Kingston with selected groups of SEBI indirect beneficiaries. In total, 31 participants attended the FGDs, providing views and responses to questions which were noted for later cross-referencing with findings from the direct beneficiary and public awareness surveys. 3. Two surveys were carried out by Market Research Services Limited (MRSL), based in Kingston, on behalf of the ET (see Annex 6 – Survey Reports for complete analysis of the findings from both surveys).
