As of January 2024, #love was the most used hashtag on Instagram, being included in over two billion posts on the social media platform. #Instagood and #instagram were used over one billion times as of early 2024.
Cristiano Ronaldo has one of the most popular Instagram accounts as of April 2024.
The Portuguese footballer is the most-followed person on the photo sharing app platform with 628 million followers. Instagram's own account was ranked first with roughly 672 million followers.
How popular is Instagram?
Instagram is a photo-sharing social networking service that enables users to take pictures and edit them with filters. The platform allows users to post and share their images online and directly with their friends and followers on the social network. The cross-platform app reached one billion monthly active users in mid-2018. In 2020, there were over 114 million Instagram users in the United States and experts project this figure to surpass 127 million users in 2023.
Who uses Instagram?
Instagram audiences are predominantly young – recent data states that almost 60 percent of U.S. Instagram users are aged 34 years or younger. Fall 2020 data reveals that Instagram is also one of the most popular social media for teens and one of the social networks with the biggest reach among teens in the United States.
Celebrity influencers on Instagram
Many celebrities and athletes are brand spokespeople and generate additional income with social media advertising and sponsored content. Unsurprisingly, Ronaldo ranked first again, as the average media value of one of his Instagram posts was 985,441 U.S. dollars.
The purpose of the dataset is to enable the replication of results as reported in the article: Bonsaksen, T., Price, D., Lamph, G., Kabelenga, I., & Geirdal, A. Ø. (2025). Sleep problems were unrelated to social media use in the late COVID-19 pandemic phase: A cross-national study. PLOS ONE 20(1): e0318507. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0318507. The data on sleep problems, psychosocial stress and social media use is uploaded as an SPSS file. Additional information to facilitate using the data can be found in the ReadMe file. The article aimed to explore the relationship between social media use and sleep problems in a cross-national sample two years after the pandemic began. It involved 1405 adults from four countries who completed an online survey. Statistical analyses included independent samples t-tests, Chi-Squared tests, and logistic regression. Among the 858 participants (61.1%) who reported recent sleep problems, 41.1% (353 individuals) attributed these issues to their COVID-19 experiences. Adjusting for age, gender, employment, and psychological distress showed that more hours of social media use were not significantly linked to sleep problems. However, being older, female, employed, and experiencing higher psychological distress were associated with more sleep issues.
How much time do people spend on social media?
As of 2024, the average daily social media usage of internet users worldwide amounted to 143 minutes per day, down from 151 minutes in the previous year. Currently, the country with the most time spent on social media per day is Brazil, with online users spending an average of three hours and 49 minutes on social media each day. In comparison, the daily time spent with social media in
the U.S. was just two hours and 16 minutes. Global social media usageCurrently, the global social network penetration rate is 62.3 percent. Northern Europe had an 81.7 percent social media penetration rate, topping the ranking of global social media usage by region. Eastern and Middle Africa closed the ranking with 10.1 and 9.6 percent usage reach, respectively.
People access social media for a variety of reasons. Users like to find funny or entertaining content and enjoy sharing photos and videos with friends, but mainly use social media to stay in touch with current events friends. Global impact of social mediaSocial media has a wide-reaching and significant impact on not only online activities but also offline behavior and life in general.
During a global online user survey in February 2019, a significant share of respondents stated that social media had increased their access to information, ease of communication, and freedom of expression. On the flip side, respondents also felt that social media had worsened their personal privacy, increased a polarization in politics and heightened everyday distractions.

Instagram data-download example dataset
In this repository you can find a data-set consisting of 11 personal Instagram archives, or Data-Download Packages (DDPs).
How the data was generated
These Instagram accounts were all new and generated by a group of researchers who were interested to figure out in detail
the structure and variety in structure of these Instagram DDPs. The participants user the Instagram account extensively for approximately a week. The participants also intensively communicated with each other so that the data can be used as an example of a network.
The data was primarily generated to evaluate the performance of de-identification software. Therefore, the text in the DDPs particularly contain many randomly chosen (Dutch) first names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and URLS. In addition, the images in the DDPs contain many faces and text as well. The DDPs contain faces and text (usernames) of third parties. However, only content of so-called `professional accounts' are shared, such as accounts of famous individuals or institutions who self-consciously and actively seek publicity, and these sources are easily publicly available. Furthermore, the DDPs do not contain sensitive personal data of these individuals.
Obtaining your Instagram DDP
After using the Instagram accounts intensively for approximately a week, the participants requested their personal Instagram DDPs by using the following steps. You can follow these steps yourself if you are interested in your personal Instagram DDP.
1. Go to www.instagram.com and log in
2. Click on your profile picture, go to *Settings* and *Privacy and Security*
3. Scroll to *Data download* and click *Request download*
4. Enter your email adress and click *Next*
5. Enter your password and click *Request download*
Instagram then delivered the data in a compressed zip folder with the format **username_YYYYMMDD.zip** (i.e., Instagram handle and date of download) to the participant, and the participants shared these DDPs with us.
Data cleaning
To comply with the Instagram user agreement, participants shared their full name, phone number and e-mail address. In addition, Instagram logged the i.p. addresses the participant used during their active period on Instagram. After colleting the DDPs, we manually replaced such information with random replacements such that the DDps shared here do not contain any personal data of the participants.
How this data-set can be used
This data-set was generated with the intention to evaluate the performance of the de-identification software. We invite other researchers to use this data-set for example to investigate what type of data can be found in Instagram DDPs or to investigate the structure of Instagram DDPs. The packages can also be used for example data-analyses, although no substantive research questions can be answered using this data as the data does not reflect how research subjects behave `in the wild'.

According to our latest research, the AI in Social Media market size reached USD 2.45 billion globally in 2024, reflecting robust adoption across diverse industries. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 27.8% from 2025 to 2033, reaching an estimated USD 22.5 billion by the end of the forecast period. This significant growth is being driven by the increasing integration of artificial intelligence to enhance user engagement, automate content creation, and deliver personalized experiences on social media platforms. As per our latest research, the proliferation of AI-powered tools and analytics solutions is fundamentally transforming the way organizations leverage social media for marketing, customer service, and brand management.
One of the primary growth factors for the AI in Social Media market is the surging demand for intelligent customer engagement solutions. AI-driven chatbots, virtual assistants, and automated response systems are enabling brands to interact with customers in real time, providing instant support and personalized recommendations. This not only enhances user satisfaction but also streamlines business processes, allowing organizations to handle higher volumes of customer queries with minimal human intervention. The ability of AI to analyze vast amounts of unstructured social data and extract actionable insights is further fueling adoption, as businesses seek to understand customer sentiment, emerging trends, and market dynamics more effectively.
Another key driver is the exponential growth in content creation and curation powered by AI algorithms. Social media platforms are increasingly leveraging machine learning and natural language processing to generate, filter, and recommend content that resonates with individual users. AI-based tools can automatically produce text, images, and videos tailored to specific audiences, enabling marketers and influencers to maintain a consistent and engaging online presence. The efficiency and scalability offered by AI in managing content workflows are particularly valuable in the era of information overload, where capturing user attention is increasingly challenging. This trend is expected to accelerate as generative AI models become more sophisticated, supporting a wider range of creative applications across social networks.
The growing emphasis on social media monitoring and advanced analytics also contributes to the expansion of the AI in Social Media market. Businesses are investing in AI-powered solutions to track brand mentions, monitor competitor activities, and detect potential crises in real time. These systems leverage sentiment analysis, image recognition, and predictive analytics to provide actionable intelligence, enabling organizations to make data-driven decisions and respond proactively to market shifts. The integration of AI with advertising platforms further enhances targeting capabilities, optimizing campaign performance and maximizing return on investment. As regulatory scrutiny around data privacy intensifies, AI technologies are also being harnessed to ensure compliance and safeguard user information, adding another layer of value for enterprises.
Regionally, North America continues to dominate the AI in Social Media market, accounting for the largest share in 2024, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific. The presence of leading technology companies, early adoption of advanced digital solutions, and a mature social media ecosystem underpin North America's leadership. However, Asia Pacific is emerging as a high-growth region, driven by rapid digitalization, expanding internet penetration, and the proliferation of mobile-first social platforms. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are also witnessing steady growth as businesses in these regions increasingly recognize the strategic importance of AI in enhancing social media engagement and brand visibility.

The Social Indicator Sample Survey (SISS) was carried out in 2013 by the National Statistical Office of Mongolia in collaboration with UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and UN Population Fund (UNFPA), as part of the global Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS5) programme. UNICEF and UNFPA provided technical and financial support.
The survey, the largest of its kind ever conducted in Mongolia, included 15,500 households and combined the Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS), Reproductive Health Survey (RHS) and Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). This survey marked the introduction of tablets for large-scale data collection.
SISS 2013 collected data to compile indicators in health, education, development, protection, well-being and rights of children and women. In addition, data on reproductive health, family planning, knowledge and attitude towards HIV/AIDS, and sexual behaviour of Mongolian men and women was collected.

The Social Indicator Sample Survey is a household-based survey where households are defined as sampling units. Therefore, the households living in their administrative unit for 6 or more months or intended to live in for 6 or more months if not 6 months yet, are defined as sampling units in the survey concept.
The sample size is defined by having actual representation in urban-rural and regions (Western, Khangai, Central, Easternand Ulaanbaatar) when provides estimates of the survey result at the national level. 15,500 households were selected with probability proportional to size at the national level and it was decided to select sampling units using household unit weight for each region or unit weight of the region's households in the national rate.
Sample was selected in two stages. In the first stage, primary sampling units (baghs and khesegs) were selected with probability proportional to size. 25 households within each of these selected baghs and khesegs were selected using the systematic sampling method. The 2012 official household registration list was used as the sampling frame. Kheseg of khoroo's for Ulaanbaatar and baghs of soum's for aimags were defined as primary sampling units (PSUs). In total, 384 baghs of 236 soums of 21 aimags and 220 khesegs of 75 khoroos of 9 districts of Ulaanbaatar were covered by the survey and for each bagh and kheseg household lists were updated in May - July 2013. For reporting results, sample weights are used.

Data was entered on electric database using the CSPro program. Procedures and standard programs developed under the global SISS programme and adapted to the SISS Mongolia 2013 questionnaire were used throughout. The data processing started from January 2014, where initial editing followed by logical editing were done. Developing syntax for main and additional tabulation started from February 2014 and completed by second half of April, 2014. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, Version 21. Model syntax and tabulation plans developed by UNICEF were customized and used for this purpose. The UNFPA, UNICEF and global team of SISS reviewed and finalized all syntaxes of tabulation of the data processing. The preliminary results of the SISS were disseminated to the public and users on June 5, 2014. The national report was developed and included comments of the Steering Committee and Working Group of the survey and global team of the SISS.
