Depression is one of the most critical mental health issues worldwide, and it is often overlooked in developing countries like Bangladesh. Social media platforms provide a vast amount of user-generated text that can help in identifying depressive symptoms. However, the lack of a standardized corpus for Bangla and code-mixed texts makes research in this area challenging.
This dataset contains 2,235 social media text samples, carefully annotated for depressive and non-depressive categories.
This dataset was developed as part of the research paper:
From Social Media to Mental Health Insights: A Hybrid CNN-LSTM Model for Depression Detection in Bangladesh

Facebook has become a crucial digital platform for women in Bangladesh, facilitating novel avenues for interaction, support, and identity formation within a patriarchal societal framework. This mixed-methods study examines the role of Facebook activity in the construction of social capital and the development of identity among Bangladeshi women. The study utilizes survey data from 357 women, analyzed by Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), to investigate the relationships between Facebook usage, network size and diversity, bonding and bridging social capital, and self-identity outcomes. The findings indicate that increased Facebook participation is a strong predictor of both network variety (β = 0.72) and size (β = 0.55), which subsequently improve bonding (R2 = 0.61) and bridging (R2 = 0.43) social capital. These network-derived social resources enhance the dynamism of identity creation (R2 = 0.425), particularly among women with varied digital connections. Qualitative insights derived from 15 comprehensive interviews elucidate these findings: Participants characterize Facebook as a dual-faceted platform broadening perspectives and facilitating self-expression, while also limited by monitoring, conservative standards, and calculated self-presentation. The research incorporates Social Capital Theory, Social Identity Theory, and Goffman’s dramaturgical framework to illustrate how digital environments simultaneously replicate and challenge gendered power dynamics. These findings enhance feminist digital sociology and ICT4D literature by elucidating how social media platforms facilitate empowerment, connectivity, and identity for women in the Global South.

The COVID-19 and information flows (CIF) constitutes a household level census of three contiguous villages- Bankina, Roail, and Shatihati, in the Tangail district of Dhaka, Bangladesh. In addition to standard socioeconomic and demographic information (e.g. marital status, employment, age, gender, living conditions, migrants, etc.), the CIF gathers information on respondents' COVID knowledge, attitudes, and practice; traces the social network of information flow between villagers; and elicits information on perceptions of respondent's economic position relative to different reference groups (e.g. neighbors, colleagues, siblings, etc.), subjective well-being, sources of help during Covid related adversities, and household GPS location coordinates. Data on 1,624 households were collected in a single wave during 09/2022 and 10/2022.

TwitterBackgroundThe beneficial influence of social networks on health and wellbeing is well-established. In poor urban settlements in Bangladesh, BRAC’s Manoshi programme trains community health workers (CHWs) to support women through pregnancy, delivery and postpartum periods. This paper test the hypothesis that the introduction of CHWs as weak ties into the social networks of Manoshi members mediates improvements in maternal and neonatal health (MNH) best practices by providing support, facilitating ideational change, connecting mother to resources, and strengthening or countering the influence of strong ties.Methods1000 women who had given birth in the last three months were identified and interviewed as part of ongoing monitoring of 5 poor urban settlements in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A social networks questionnaire was administered which elicited women’s perceived networks around pregnancy, delivery and post-partum periods. Mediation analysis was performed to test the hypothesis that penetration of Manoshi CHWs into women’s perceived networks has a beneficial effect on MNH best practises.ResultsThe presence and influence of Manoshi CHWs in women’s networks significantly mediated the effect of Manoshi membership on MNH best practices. Respondents who were Manoshi members and who listed Manoshi CHWs as part of their support networks were significantly more likely to deliver with a trained birth attendant (OR 3.61; 95%CI 2.36–5.51), to use postnatal care (OR 3.09; 95%CI 1.83–5.22), and to give colostrum to their newborn (OR 7.51; 95%CI 3.51–16.05).ConclusionManoshi has succeeded in penetrating the perceived pregnancy, delivery and post-partum networks of poor urban women through the introduction of trained CHWs. Study findings demonstrate the benefits of moving beyond urban health care delivery models that concentrate on the provision of clinical services by medical providers, to an approach that nurtures the power of social networks as a means to support the poorest and most marginalized in changing behaviour and effectively accessing appropriate maternal services.

Background: Smartphone and social media use are an integral part of our daily life. Currently, the impact of excessive smartphone and social media use during the COVID-19 pandemic is poorly understood. The present study aimed to investigate problematic smartphone use (PSPU) and problematic social media use (PSMU) among Bangladeshi college and university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving 5,511 Bangladeshi college and university students (male: 58.9%; mean age: 21.2 years [SD = 1.7]; age range: 18–25) during the social-distancing in the COVID-19 pandemic (July 2020). A self-reported survey containing questions regarding socio-demographic, lifestyle, and home quarantine activities along with four psychometric scales was completed by participants. Results: The mean scores of PSPU and PSMU were 20.8 ± 6.8 (out of 36) and 14.7 ± 4.8 (out of 30). Based on a hierarchical regression analysis, PSPU and PSMU were positively associated with lower age, poor sleep, social media use, watching television, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, PSMU was linked to being female, living with nuclear family, having urban residence, irregular physical exercise, poor engagement with academic studies, and avoiding earning activities, whilst being male, being married, living with lower-income family, and alcohol consumption were linked to PSMU.Conclusions: The findings indicate that PSPU and PSMU were linked to poor psychological well-being (i.e., anxiety and depression) and other factors (especially lower age, poor sleep) during the pandemic, further suggesting the need for interventions including virtual awareness programs among college and university students.

Myths, misinformation, facts like posts spread by social media during COVID-19 pandemic had an enormous effect on psychological health. This study aimed to investigate social media based COVID-19’s posts and the psychological health status of participants. A cross-sectional, online survey-based study was conducted in between April to October 2021 using a structured and semi-structured questionnaire, predominantly involving 1200 active social network users in Bangladesh. Depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), while the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) measured insomnia severity for selected participants. Internal reliabilities were calculated with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients (cut-off point 0.70). Unrelated multivariate logistic regression explored correlations among outcome errors, with the model assessing the impact of selected independent variables on mental health. The findings demonstrated that 27.8% individuals spread facts whereas 7.4% spread myths and misinformation about COVID-19 on social networks. Furthermore, 28.1% and 36.7% shared obstinate and concerning posts respectively. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress symptoms, ranging from mild to extremely severe, were 43.9%, 30.9%, and 23.8% respectively. However, 2.8% had severe level of insomnia. Facts, myths, tour attending, and no mask group photos were significantly associated with anxiety, and less likelihood of experiencing anxiety. Interestingly, circulating such activities on social networks had no significant association with depression, stress, or insomnia. The spread of misinformation on social media undermines any efforts to contain COVID-19 infection. The findings hugely recommend of using fact checking facilities and adaptation to the pandemic situations to maintain lower prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia.
