The Social Sciences and Humanities Research and Development Activities industry’s revenue is expected to contract at a compound annual rate of 4.3% over the five years through 2024 to €3.6 billion. This includes a forecast drop of 2.8% in 2024. Revenue is far lower than in the Natural Science and Engineering Research and Development Activities industry, since scientific innovation, engineering techniques and healthcare developments are prioritised over research in societal change, economics, political science and cultural progress. Spending by businesses on R&D for these subjects is significantly lower, with most money instead coming from publicly backed organisations, such as think tanks, political organisations and cultural centres. That being said, Belgium, Germany, Malta and Sweden all rely more heavily on business-funded R&D, whereas Greece, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Estonia all depend more on government funding, finds Eurostat. Horizon Europe and the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) have made significant funding contributions since 2020 to progress in R&D, which has boosted revenue. Revenue is slated to climb at a compound annual rate of 3.5% over the five years through 2029 to €4.3 billion. Horizon Europe funding will continue to boost revenue for R&D activities and businesses are expected to allocate more funding to R&D as the value of research in humanities and social sciences becomes clearer. HERA will continue to encourage collaboration on R&D in Europe through the Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe programme, which includes countries like Spain, the UK, Estonia, Poland and Croatia.

Balancing speed and quality during crises pose challenges for ensuring the value and utility of data in social science research. The COVID-19 pandemic in particular underscores the need for high-quality data and rapid dissemination. Given the importance of behavioral measures and compliance with measures to contain the pandemic, social science research has played a key role for policymaking during this global crisis.
This study addresses two key research questions: How FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) are social science data on the COVID-19 pandemic? Which study features are related to the level of FAIRness scores of datasets? We assess the FAIRness of n=1,131 articles, retrieved through a keyword search in the Web of Science database, employing both automated and manual coding methods. Our study inclusion criteria encompass empirical studies on the COVID-19 pandemic published between 2019-2023 with a social science focus and explicit reference to the underlying dataset(s). Our analysis of n=45 datasets reveals substantial differences in FAIRness for different types of research on the COVID-19 pandemic. The overall FAIRness of data is acceptable, although particularly Reusability scores fall short, in both the manual and the automatic assessment. Further, articles explicitly linked to the Social Science concept in the OpenAlex database exhibit a higher mean overall FAIRness value. Based on these results, we derive recommendations for balancing ethical obligations and the potential tradeoff between speed and data (sharing) quality in social-scientific crisis research.
The replication data contains the manual and automatic coded values for FAIR criteria and the complete code to re-produce the results for the article.

Abstract of the research:
Purpose: this study aims to investigate the representation and distribution of Social Science and Humanities (SSH) journals within the OpenCitations Meta database, with a particular emphasis on their Open Access (OA) status, as well as their spread across different disciplines and countries. The underlying premise is that open infrastructures play a pivotal role in promoting transparency, reproducibility, and trust in scientific research. Study Design and Methodology: the study is grounded on the premise that open infrastructures are crucial for ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and fostering trust in scientific research. The research methodology involved the use of secondary data sources, namely the OpenCitations Meta database, the ERIH PLUS bibliographic index, and the DOAJ index. A custom research software was developed in Python to facilitate the processing and analysis of the data. Findings: the results reveal that 78.1% of SSH journals listed in the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH-PLUS) are included in the OpenCitations Meta database. The discipline of Psychology has the highest number of publications. The United States and the United Kingdom are the leading contributors in terms of the number of publications. However, the study also uncovers that only 38% of the SSH journals in the OpenCitations Meta database are OA. Originality: this research adds to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the representation of SSH in open bibliographic databases and the role of open access in this domain. The study highlights the necessity for advocating OA practices within SSH and the significance of open data for bibliometric studies. It further encourages additional research into the impact of OA on various facets of citation patterns and the factors leading to disparity across disciplinary representation.

Research projects in social sciences and humanities aim to address societal issues and human affairs. They’re largely funded by the government – funds offered in the government’s budget flow to the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and then the Agence Nationale de la Recherche. Government investment programmes like France 2030 and private business investment are also important drivers of revenue growth. However, the industry faces some funding challenges, as social sciences and humanities research receives less funding than STEM, taking only 8% of the 2023 Agence Nationale de la Recherche budget, which leaves revenue growth in the humanities often lagging behind that of its scientific research equivalents. Revenue is expected to fall at a compound annual rate of 3.1% over the five years through 2025 to €387.1 million. The industry had to navigate a tricky 2024, with unexpected budget cuts to research activities in France throughout the year – the result of France’s perilous spending habits. With France wrestling with significant public debt, the 2025 Budget (which has been shelved until parliament approves it thanks to a special law that’s allowing the government to carry over the 2024 budget) would reduce the budget for the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation if it passes in some form in 2025. The prospect of financial constraints in the wake of inflationary pressures and 2024 budget cuts are spelling uncertainty for new and ongoing research projects alike. Uncertainty discourages investment in R&D from business and deters new research initiatives. Still, initiatives like France 2030 are attempting to shine more of a spotlight on social sciences and humanities by encouraging more projects to submit proposals. As a result, revenue is slated to rise by 3.3% in 2025. Investment programmes look set to keep encouraging R&D, but the financial future of the France 2030 programme will be closely tied to government decisions around the budget. With political uncertainty set to linger in the immediate future, the government’s ability to exercise its research funding arm isn’t certain, which could threaten the growth of research activities. Still, revenue is forecast to climb at a compound annual rate of 2% over the five years through 2030 to €426.7 million. With Horizon Europe running until 2027, offering financial backing for social sciences, French researchers can expect increased opportunities for growth and international collaboration.

The SAGE Social Science Thesaurus is a multidisciplinary vocabulary of the most important concepts in the social sciences. SAGE uses this vocabulary as its principal keyword vocabulary for automated tagging of content on SAGE Knowledge and SAGE Research Methods. You are welcome to browse, download, use and transform the vocabulary for any non-commercial purpose.
The majority of concepts in the thesaurus have been mined from headwords in SAGE encyclopedias and other reference works. Relationships between concepts have been inferred from implicit structures in those works, for example subject indexes and readers' guides. As such, the thesaurus is a structured representation of what the editors of those reference works consider to be the most important concepts in the social sciences.
Additional scraping work has extracted and structured concept-specific metadata, such as dates (for events and people) and definitions. In addition to broader-narrower relationships, concepts are grouped by type: concepts, people, organizations, events, methods, theories or laws.
