    Description

The Ithaka S+R study Teaching with Data in the Social Sciences (TDSS) built on Ithaka's S+R's ongoing research program to investigate teaching practices and support needs across multiple disciplines within higher education. The goals were to understand teaching of foundational skills necessary for success in a data-driven world; how to help students achieve data literacy; how to facilitate finding datasets; and identifying tools to help students manipulate, understand, and visualize data. Twenty institutions contributed to the overall project. This collection contains project data from Washington University in St. Louis. The university research team conducted semi-structured interviews with 13 instructors who, at the time of study, taught with data to undergraduates in the social sciences (Anthropology, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, History, Business, Economics).

    Description

Survey researchers have long protected the privacy of respondents via de-identification (removing names and other directly identifying information) before sharing data. Although these procedures help, recent research demonstrates that they fail to protect respondents from intentional re-identification attacks, a problem that threatens to undermine vast survey enterprises in academia, government, and industry. This is especially a problem in political science because political beliefs are not merely the subject of our scholarship; they represent some of the most important information respondents want to keep private. We confirm the problem in practice by re-identifying individuals from a survey about a controversial referendum declaring life beginning at conception. We build on the concept of “differential privacy” to offer new data sharing procedures with mathematical guarantees for protecting respondent privacy and statistical validity guarantees for social scientists analyzing differentially private data. The cost of these new procedures is larger standard errors, which can be overcome with somewhat larger sample sizes.

    Description

The interview data was gathered for a project investigating the practices of instructors who use quantitative data to teach undergraduate courses within the Social Sciences. The study was undertaken by employees of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Library, who participated in this research project with 19 other colleges and universities across the U.S. under the direction of Ithaka S+R. Ithaka S+R is a New York-based research organization that, among other goals, seeks to develop strategies, services, and products to meet evolving academic trends and support faculty and students. The field of Social Sciences has been notoriously known for valuing the contextual component of data and increasingly entertaining more quantitative and computational approaches to research in response to the prevalence of data literacy skills needed to navigate both personal and professional contexts. Thus, this study becomes particularly timely to identify current instructors’ practices and strategies to teach with data challenges and opportunities to help them advance their instructional efforts. The fundamental goal of this study is fourfold: 1) Explore the ways in which instructors teach undergraduates with data, 2) Understand instructors’ support needs going forward, 3) Develop actionable recommendations for stakeholders, and 4) Build relationships within UCSB and across higher education institutions. This research project was IRB-approved and exempted by the UCSB’s Office of Research in July 2020 (Protocol 1-20-0491).

    Introduction

Social Media Mental Health Statistics: Social media has many uses, but it often causes the most harm to younger users. Teens face significant mental health issues due to social media, and the COVID-19 pandemic made things worse by increasing screen time and social media use. This created more opportunities for teens to encounter online problems, worsening the situation.

Teens also use social media to find communities and interest groups, watch live streams, and support good causes. It’s important to US teens that they feel welcome and safe online. Despite some problems, social media offers many chances for connection and entertainment. We shall shed more light on the Social Media Mental Health Statistics through this article.
