Existing studies show how population growth and rising incomes will cause a massive increase in the future global demand for food. We add to the literature by estimating the potential effect of increases in human weight, caused by rising BMI and height, on future calorie requirements. Instead of using a market based approach, the estimations are solely based on human energy requirements for maintenance of weight. We develop four different scenarios to show the effect of increases in human height and BMI. In a world where the weight per age-sex group would stay stable, we project calorie requirements to increases by 61.05 percent between 2010 and 2100. Increases in BMI and height could add another 18.73 percentage points to this. This additional increase amounts to more than the combined calorie requirements of India and Nigeria in 2010. These increases would particularly affect Sub-Saharan African countries, which will already face massively rising calorie requirements due to the high population growth. The stark regional differences call for policies that increase food access in currently economically weak regions. Such policies should shift consumption away from energy dense foods that promote overweight and obesity, to avoid the direct burden associated with these conditions and reduce the increases in required calories. Supplying insufficient calories would not solve the problem but cause malnutrition in populations with weak access to food. As malnutrition is not reducing but promoting rises in BMI levels, this might even aggravate the situation.

Estimation of responses of organisms to their environment using experimental manipulations, and comparison of such responses across sets of species, is one of the primary tools in ecology research. The most common approach is to compare response of a single life stage of species to an environmental factor and use this information to draw conclusions about population dynamics of these species. Such approach ignores the fact that interspecific fitness differences measured at a single life stage are not directly comparable and cannot be extrapolated to lifetime fitness of individuals and thus species' population dynamics. Comparison of one life stage only while omitting demographic information can strongly bias conclusions, both in experimental studies with a few species, and in large comparative studies.
We illustrate the effect of this omission using both an exaggerated fictitious example, and biological data on congeneric species differing in their demography. We are showing, taking simple assumptions, that different demography can completely revert conclusions reached by a comparison based on an experiment focusing on a single life stage.
We show that a "demographic correction", namely translating observed effects into differences in outcomes of demographic models, is a solution to this problem. It requires turning the detected effects from the experiment into changes of transition probabilities of projection matrix models. Although such solution is limited by the low number of species with demographic data available, we believe that existing data (and data likely to be collected in the near future) permit at least approximate handling of this problem.

The escalating generation of household medical waste, a byproduct of industrialization and global population growth, has rendered its transportation and logistics management a critical societal concern. This study delves into the optimization of routes for vehicles within the household medical waste logistics network, a response to the imperative of managing this waste effectively. The potential for environmental and public health hazards due to improper waste disposal is acknowledged, prompting the incorporation of contamination risk, influenced by transport duration, waste volume, and wind velocity, into the analysis. To enhance the realism of the simulation, traffic congestion is integrated into the vehicle speed function, reflecting the urban roads’ variability. Subsequently, a Bi-objective mixed-integer programming model is formulated to concurrently minimize total operational costs and environmental pollution risks. The complexity inherent in the optimization problem has motivated the development of the Adaptive Hybrid Artificial Fish Swarming Algorithm with Non-Dominated Sorting (AH-NSAFSA). This algorithm employs a sophisticated approach, amalgamating congestion distance and individual ranking to discern optimal solutions from the population. It incorporates a decay function to facilitate an adaptive iterative process, enhancing the algorithm’s convergence properties. Furthermore, it leverages the concept of crossover-induced elimination to preserve the genetic diversity and overall robustness of the solution set. The empirical evaluation of AH-NSAFSA is conducted using a test set derived from the Solomon dataset, demonstrating the algorithm’s capability to generate feasible non-dominated solutions for household medical waste recycling path planning. Comparative analysis with the Non-dominated Sorted Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm (NSAFSA) and Non-dominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) across metrics such as MID, SM, NOS, and CT reveals that AH-NSAFSA excels in MID, SM, and NOS, and surpasses NSAFSA in CT, albeit slightly underperforming relative to NSGA-II. The study’s holistic approach to waste recycling route planning, which integrates cost-effectiveness with pollution risk and traffic congestion considerations, offers substantial support for enterprises in formulating sustainable green development strategies. AH-NSAFSA offers an eco-efficient, holistic approach to medical waste recycling, advancing sustainable management practices.

The survival and reproduction of living organisms depend on their ability to achieve an adequate balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Multiple quantities contribute to this energetic balance, such as the feeding rate, and the allocation of available energy to growth, maintenance, movement, and reproduction. Given that many of these quantities scale in a predictable way with the size of the organism and with environmental parameters, it should be possible to predict how organisms may adapt to novel environmental conditions in terms of adjusting their morphology, physiology, and behaviour. In a series of experiments, we adapted axenic experimental populations of the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis to different environmental conditions of temperature (15°C, 20°C and 25°C) and resource levels (50%, 100%, and 200% of a standard protein solution). Key Drivers for The Contraceptive Market
Increased usage of contraceptives due to STDs is projected to fuel the market growth
Diseases Transmitted by Sexual Activity Demand for contraceptives in disease prevention is rising. The market for contraceptives is being driven by the increase in the prevalence of STDs. Infections known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are contracted through sexual contact. Anal, oral, and vaginal sex are the most common ways that they come into touch, while they can also spread through other close physical contact techniques. In order to control the spread of sexually transmitted infections such as herpes and HPV, which mostly occur through skin-to-skin contact, contraceptives are used. For instance, in May 2023 Primary and secondary syphilis cases increased by 19% in 2022, from 564 in 2021 to 676 in 2022, according to the Minnesota Department of Health, a US-based state health agency of the State of Minnesota. There were 20 cases of congenital syphilis in newborns in 2022. Comparing this to 2021, when 14 cases of congenital syphilis were reported, there has been a 42% increase. Thus, it is anticipated that the rise in STDs will increase demand for contraceptives during the anticipated time frame Source: (https://www.health.state.mn.us/news/pressrel/2024/syphilis012524.html) Thus, it is anticipated that the rise in STDs will increase demand for contraceptives during the predicted time frame in order to cure the diseases transmitted by sexual activity the usage of contraceptive may fuel the growth of the market.
Growing population fuel the contraceptives market
The global population rise is being addressed through contraceptive solutions, with population growth driving the contraceptive market. In the upcoming years, the market for contraceptives is anticipated to increase at a rapid pace due to the rise in population rates worldwide. The total number of people, animals, or other entities that inhabit a given area, nation, or planet is referred to as the population. Because contraceptives enable couples and individuals to plan and regulate their child spacing and household size, they play a crucial role in the population decline. For instance, in December 2022 the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, an intergovernmental organization housed within the UN Secretariat and headquartered in Switzerland that advances the interests of developing countries in international trade, projects that by 2022, there will be more people on the planet than 8 billion, having grown by 0.9% in 2021. Source: (https://unctad.org/about) Thus, the market for contraceptives is being driven by the increase in population rates worldwide. From the above factor it clearly states that growing population increase the demand for hormonal contraceptives and it is expected to rise. Further.

Free-roaming dog populations ensue from irresponsible dog ownership and abandonment. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Hong Kong SAR offers practical solutions to control dog population growth by providing a range of different birth control programs. We present the first results of a trial Trap Neuter Return (TNR) program in Hong Kong SAR; with a free-roaming dog population on Cheung Chau Island (southwest). During the 3-year study, the SPCA undertook surveys to assess population size and trapped, desexed, and, where possible, rehomed free-roaming dogs. We report that a total of 182 dogs were encountered during the period. We estimate that an average of 75% of the population was desexed, reaching the threshold for successful TNR studies. The results of our study show that TNR can assist with free-roaming dog population control and provide guidance for future programs, in Asia and Hong Kong SAR.

North America FOG Market size was valued at USD 10.35 Billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 14.35 Billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 4.6% from 2024 to 2031.
North America FOG Market Drivers
Stringent Environmental Regulations: One of the primary drivers for the FOG control market is the growing number of environmental regulations aimed at reducing wastewater contamination and protecting natural water bodies. Governments and environmental agencies worldwide are imposing stringent standards for wastewater treatment and disposal. FOG, when released untreated into sewer systems, can cause blockages and even lead to the contamination of rivers, lakes, and oceans. Regulations such as the Clean Water Act in the U.S. and similar policies in other regions mandate the removal of FOG from wastewater before it enters the public sewage system. As municipalities and industries must comply with these regulations, there is increasing demand for FOG control solutions.
Rising Urbanization and Population Growth: Urbanization and population growth are significant factors driving the FOG market. As cities grow and populations increase, there is a higher volume of wastewater generated, particularly from restaurants, food processing facilities, and households. These urban centers face an escalating need for effective wastewater treatment systems to manage the higher levels of fats, oils, and grease in the sewage. FOG from food waste, oils used in cooking, and other industrial processes often overwhelm traditional wastewater systems, requiring specialized solutions to prevent clogging and protect the infrastructure.
