    Description

In 2025, approximately 23 million people lived in the São Paulo metropolitan area, making it the biggest in Latin America and the Caribbean and the sixth most populated in the world. The homonymous state of São Paulo was also the most populous federal entity in the country. The second place for the region was Mexico City with 22.75 million inhabitants. Brazil's cities Brazil is home to two large metropolises, only counting the population within the city limits, São Paulo had approximately 11.45 million inhabitants, and Rio de Janeiro around 6.21 million inhabitants. It also contains a number of smaller, but well known cities such as Brasília, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and many others, which report between 2 and 3 million inhabitants each. As a result, the country's population is primarily urban, with nearly 88 percent of inhabitants living in cities. Mexico City Mexico City's metropolitan area ranks sevenths in the ranking of most populated cities in the world. Founded over the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan in 1521 after the Spanish conquest as the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, the city still stands as one of the most important in Latin America. Nevertheless, the preeminent economic, political, and cultural position of Mexico City has not prevented the metropolis from suffering the problems affecting the rest of the country, namely, inequality and violence. Only in 2023, the city registered a crime incidence of 52,723 reported cases for every 100,000 inhabitants and around 24 percent of the population lived under the poverty line.

    Description

Based on land area, Brazil is the largest country in Latin America by far, with a total area of over 8.5 million square kilometers. Argentina follows with almost 2.8 million square kilometers. Cuba, whose surface area extends over almost 111,000 square kilometers, is the Caribbean country with the largest territory.

Brazil: a country with a lot to offer

Brazil's borders reach nearly half of the South American subcontinent, making it the fifth-largest country in the world and the third-largest country in the Western Hemisphere. Along with its landmass, Brazil also boasts the largest population and economy in the region. Although Brasília is the capital, the most significant portion of the country's population is concentrated along its coastline in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

South America: a region of extreme geographic variation

With the Andes mountain range in the West, the Amazon Rainforest in the East, the Equator in the North, and Cape Horn as the Southern-most continental tip, South America has some of the most diverse climatic and ecological terrains in the world. At its core, its biodiversity can largely be attributed to the Amazon, the world's largest tropical rainforest, and the Amazon river, the world's largest river. However, with this incredible wealth of ecology also comes great responsibility. In the past decade, roughly 80,000 square kilometers of the Brazilian Amazon were destroyed. And, as of late 2019, there were at least 1,000 threatened species in Brazil alone.

    Measurement technique
To measure the rank and respective trends, we initially gathered data from the five most recent American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates. We then analyzed and categorized the data for each of the racial categories identified by the U.S. Census Bureau. Based on the required racial category classification, we calculated the rank. For geographies with no population reported for the chosen race, we did not assign a rank and excluded them from the list. It is possible that a small population exists but was not reported or captured due to limitations or variations in Census data collection and reporting. We ensured that the population estimates used in this dataset pertain exclusively to the identified racial categories and do not rely on any ethnicity classification, unless explicitly required. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    Description

The South American city gas distribution market, valued at approximately $XX million in 2025, is projected to experience robust growth, driven by increasing urbanization, industrial expansion, and rising energy demands across the region. A Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) exceeding 2.00% is anticipated from 2025 to 2033, indicating a steady and significant market expansion. Key drivers include government initiatives promoting cleaner energy sources, coupled with expanding infrastructure development in key cities across Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. The Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) segment holds a significant market share due to its cost-effectiveness and versatility in transportation and industrial applications. However, the market faces challenges from fluctuating gas prices and the need for continued investment in pipeline infrastructure, especially in less developed areas within the "Rest of South America" segment. The market is segmented by gas type (CNG and PNG), end-user (industrial, power sector, residential & commercial, and transportation), and geography (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Rest of South America). Brazil, with its large population and industrial base, is expected to dominate the market, followed by Argentina and Chile. Key players like Petroleo Brasileiro SA, Companhia de Gas de Sao Paulo (Comgas), and Naturgy Energy Group SA are actively shaping the market landscape through expansion strategies, technological advancements, and strategic partnerships. The growth trajectory hinges on consistent investment in infrastructure, efficient regulatory frameworks, and sustained economic growth across South American nations. The residential and commercial sectors are poised for significant expansion driven by rising living standards and increased access to natural gas networks. However, competition among existing players and potential entry of new players will influence market dynamics and pricing strategies in the coming years. Recent developments include: August 2022: As part of Ambipar's initial investment of USD 5.5 million, it incorporates trucks equipped with compressed natural gas (CNG) technology, such as Scania R 410 6X2 models, into its fleet. Ambipar estimates a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in the Corridor after the first year of circulation of these new units. Description

The Latin American location analytics market, encompassing Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, is experiencing robust growth, projected at a 7.99% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) from 2025 to 2033. This expansion is driven by several key factors. Increasing adoption of smart city initiatives across the region is fueling demand for location-based insights to optimize urban planning, resource management, and public safety. Furthermore, the burgeoning e-commerce sector and the growing need for efficient logistics and supply chain management are significantly contributing to market growth. The rise of location-based services (LBS) and the increasing availability of high-quality location data are also propelling market expansion. Specific application areas like remote monitoring in healthcare, asset tracking in manufacturing, and facility optimization in retail are showing particularly strong growth. While data privacy concerns and the need for robust data security infrastructure present some restraints, the overall market outlook remains positive, driven by ongoing technological advancements and increasing digital transformation across diverse industries. The market segmentation reveals significant opportunities. The outdoor location analytics segment is likely larger than the indoor segment due to the broader applicability of outdoor solutions across various sectors. On-premise deployment models might hold a larger initial market share compared to on-demand, reflecting a preference for greater control and data security, though on-demand solutions are expected to gain momentum. Software components will likely hold a larger share compared to services initially, with a gradual increase in service revenue over the forecast period. Among end-user verticals, retail and manufacturing are key drivers due to their reliance on optimized logistics and supply chain management. Healthcare and government sectors show substantial growth potential as they increasingly adopt location analytics for improving services. While precise market size figures for individual countries aren't provided, Brazil, with its larger economy and population, is likely to dominate the market, followed by Mexico and Argentina. Description

The South American air quality monitoring market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing environmental concerns, stringent government regulations, and rising industrialization across the region. A compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 4% indicates a significant expansion projected through 2033. This growth is fueled by several key factors. Firstly, growing awareness of air pollution's health impacts is pushing both governments and citizens to demand better monitoring systems. Secondly, the increasing prevalence of respiratory illnesses linked to poor air quality further underscores the need for comprehensive monitoring solutions. Furthermore, expanding industrial sectors, particularly in Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, necessitate advanced monitoring technologies to comply with emission standards. The market is segmented by product type (indoor and outdoor monitors), pollutant type (chemical, biological, and physical), end-user (residential, commercial, power generation, petrochemicals, and others), and geography (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and the Rest of South America). While Brazil is anticipated to dominate the market due to its larger economy and industrial base, other countries are also showing substantial growth potential. Challenges include high initial investment costs for advanced monitoring equipment and the need for skilled technicians to operate and maintain these systems. However, government initiatives promoting sustainable development and investments in infrastructure are likely to mitigate these challenges and further propel market expansion. The market is largely driven by the demand for real-time air quality data for effective pollution control and public health management. This necessitates the adoption of advanced technologies, including IoT-enabled sensors and sophisticated data analytics platforms. The increasing adoption of smart city initiatives across South America is further boosting market growth, as these initiatives prioritize real-time monitoring and efficient resource management. The competitive landscape includes both international players and regional companies. Large multinational corporations like Honeywell and Thermo Fisher Scientific offer comprehensive solutions, while smaller companies specialize in niche applications and regional requirements. Future growth will be influenced by technological advancements, evolving regulatory frameworks, and the level of government support for environmental protection initiatives. This feature layer provides access to OpenStreetMap (OSM) waterways data for South America, which is updated every 15 minutes with the latest edits. This hosted feature layer view is referencing a hosted feature layer of OSM line (way) data in ArcGIS Online that is updated with minutely diffs from the OSM planet file. This feature layer view includes waterway features defined as a query against the hosted feature layer (i.e. waterway is not blank). In OSM, a waterway describes rivers, streams and ditches with a flow of water from one place to another. These features are identified with a waterway tag. There are hundreds of different tag values for waterway used in the OSM database. In this feature layer, unique symbols are used for several of the most popular waterway types, while lesser used types are grouped in an "other" category.Zoom in to large scales (e.g. City level or 1:80k scale) to see the waterway features display. You can click on a feature to get the name of the waterway (if available). The name of the waterway will display by default at large scales (e.g. Street level of 1:5k scale). Labels can be turned off in your map if you prefer.Create New LayerIf you would like to create a more focused version of this waterway layer displaying just one or two waterway types, you can do that easily! Just add the layer to a map, copy the layer in the content window, add a filter to the new layer (e.g. waterway is dam), rename the layer as appropriate, and save layer. You can also change the layer symbols or popup if you like. Esri may publish a few such layers (e.g. streams and rivers) that are ready to use, but not for every type of waterway.Important Note: if you do create a new layer, it should be provided under the same Terms of Use and include the same Credits as this layer. You can copy and paste the Terms of Use and Credits info below in the new Item page as needed.
