    The Great Britain Historical Database has been assembled as part of the ongoing Great Britain Historical GIS Project. The project aims to trace the emergence of the north-south divide in Britain and to provide a synoptic view of the human geography of Britain at sub-county scales. Further information about the project is available on A Vision of Britain webpages, where users can browse the database's documentation system online.


    These digital boundaries were created by the Great Britain Historical GIS Project and form part of the Great Britain Historical Database, which contains a wide range of geographically-located statistics, selected to trace the emergence of the north-south divide in Britain and to provide a synoptic view of the human geography of Britain, generally at sub-county scales.

    They represent the boundaries of Administrative Counties in England and Wales as in use at the date of each Census of Population between 1911 and 1971, 1911 being the first census to report extensively on these units.


    Main Topics:

    These digital boundaries can be used to map economic, social and demographic statistics from the Censuses of Population, 1911 to 1971, the Registrar-General's reports from the same period, and other relevant statistical sources. They can also be used as reference maps for these administrative units.

    These units were aggregations of Local Government Districts and differed significantly from both Ancient Counties and the Registration Counties covered by earlier censuses. Difference include that the three Ridings of Yorkshire and the three Parts of Lincolnshire were separate Administrative Counties, as were East and West Suffolk, and East and West Sussex. The Isle of Ely and the Soke of Peterborough were also separate Administrative Counties until 1965, when Middlesex was also abolished as the County of London was expanded to become Greater London. The Isle of Wight was a separate Administrative County from Hampshire throughout the period.

    The boundary data contain the same numerical identifiers as are included in the GBHD transcriptions of census and vital registration statistics for Administrative Counties, making statistical mapping straightforward.

    The population of the United Kingdom in 2023 was estimated to be approximately 68.3 million in 2023, with almost 9.48 million people living in South East England. London had the next highest population, at over 8.9 million people, followed by the North West England at 7.6 million. With the UK's population generally concentrated in England, most English regions have larger populations than the constituent countries of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which had populations of 5.5 million, 3.16 million, and 1.92 million respectively. English counties and cities The United Kingdom is a patchwork of various regional units, within England the largest of these are the regions shown here, which show how London, along with the rest of South East England had around 18 million people living there in this year. The next significant regional units in England are the 47 metropolitan and ceremonial counties. After London, the metropolitan counties of the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and West Yorkshire were the biggest of these counties, due to covering the large urban areas of Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds respectively. Regional divisions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland The smaller countries that comprise the United Kingdom each have different local subdivisions. Within Scotland these are called council areas whereas in Wales the main regional units are called unitary authorities. Scotland's largest Council Area by population is that of Glasgow City at over 622,000, while in Wales, it was the Cardiff Unitary Authority at around 372,000. Northern Ireland, on the other hand, has eleven local government districts, the largest of which is Belfast with a population of around 348,000.

    Description

    This statistical release provides breakdowns of individual insolvencies in England and Wales, at region, county, unitary authority and local authority levels. It also includes age and gender breakdowns of individual insolvencies at region level. The statistics cover the calendar years 2000 to 2013, including revisions to data from 2000 to 2012 where applicable.

    Key facts

    • The total insolvency rate decreased in all regions, but the individual voluntary arrangement rate increased.
    • The North East continued to have the highest insolvency rates, while London had the lowest.
    • Areas with the highest insolvency rates were concentrated in seaside resort areas, parts of the North East, South West and East Midlands.
    • The gap between male and female insolvency rates narrowed.
    • Insolvency rates among those aged under 35 were higher for women than men.

    Constituency key facts

    • Total insolvency rates were highest in parliamentary constituencies by the coast, and in the South West, North East, and parts of Yorkshire and East Midlands.
    • Total insolvency rates were lowest in parliamentary constituencies in London, the South East, West Wales and parts of the North West.
    • For IVAs the pattern was slightly different, with fewer coastal constituencies having the highest rates.
    • Comparisons of rates between years at this local level should take into account that small changes in the number of insolvencies can have a large impact on the rate.

    Removal of ‘Experimental Statistics’ designation

    Individual Insolvencies by Region was first published in 2009, covering the period 2000-2008. It has been as designated as Experimental Statistics – new Official Statistics which are undergoing evaluation – each year since then.

    In 2013, the Insolvency Service consulted users about the usefulness of these statistics and acted on feedback received. The methods used to produce these statistics are stable and so the Insolvency Service has removed the Experimental Statistics designation.

    These statistics will be designated as Official Statistics until they have been assessed by the UK Statistics Authority, who will judge whether they meet the quality standards of National Statistics.

    There was a breach of the Code of Practice on 9 July 2014, prior to publication. One Insolvency Service official who was not on the pre-release access list was given access to the statistics.     In 2023, London had a gross domestic product of over 569 billion British pounds, by far the most of any region of the United Kingdom. The region of South East England which surrounds London had the second-highest GDP in this year, at over 360 billion pounds. North West England, which includes the major cities of Manchester and Liverpool, had the third-largest GDP among UK regions, at almost 250 billion pounds. Levelling Up the UK London’s economic dominance of the UK can clearly be seen when compared to the other regions of the country. In terms of GDP per capita, the gap between London and the rest of the country is striking, standing at over 63,600 pounds per person in the UK capital, compared with just over 37,100 pounds in the rest of the country. To address the economic imbalance, successive UK governments have tried to implement "levelling-up policies", which aim to boost investment and productivity in neglected areas of the country. The success of these programs going forward may depend on their scale, as it will likely take high levels of investment to reverse economic neglect regions have faced in the recent past. Overall UK GDP The gross domestic product for the whole of the United Kingdom amounted to 2.56 trillion British pounds in 2024. During this year, GDP grew by 0.9 percent, following a growth rate of 0.4 percent in 2023. Due to the overall population of the UK growing faster than the economy, however, GDP per capita in the UK fell in both 2023 and 2024. Nevertheless, the UK remains one of the world’s biggest economies, with just five countries (the United States, China, Japan, Germany, and India) having larger economies. It is it likely that several other countries will overtake the UK economy in the coming years, with Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, and Mexico all expected to have larger economies than Britain by 2050.

    description: New 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping along the Interstate-70 urban corridor in western Colorado, in support of the State/ USGS Cooperative Geologic Mapping Project, is contributing to a more complete understanding of the stratigraphy, structure, tectonic evolution, and hazard potential of this rapidly developing region. The 1:24,000-scale Vail East quadrangle straddles the Gore fault system, the western structural boundary of the Gore Range. The Gore fault system is a contractional structure that has been recurrently active since at least the early Paleozoic and marks the approximate eastern boundary of the Central Colorado trough, a thick late Paleozoic depocenter into which thousands of meters of clastic sediment were deposited from several uplifts, including the ancestral Front Range. The Gore fault was active during both the late Paleozoic and Upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary (Laramide) deformations. In addition, numerous north-northwest faults that cut the crystalline rocks of the Gore Range were active during at least 5 periods, the last of which was related to Neogene uplift of the Gore Range and formation of the northern Rio Grande rift. Early Proterozoic crystalline rocks underlie the high Gore Range, north and east of the Gore fault system. These rocks consist predominantly of migmatitic biotite gneiss intruded by mostly granitic rocks of the 1.667-1.750 Ma Cross Creek batholith, part of the 1,667-1,750 Ma Routt Plutonic Suite ( Tweto, 1987). Southwest of the Gore fault, a mostly gently south-dipping sequence of Pennsylvanian Mimturn Formation, as thick as 1,900 m, and the Permian and Pennsylvanian Maroon Formation (only the basal several hundred meters are exposed in the quadrangle)were shed from the ancestral Front Range and overlie a thin sequence of Devonian and Cambrian rocks. The Minturn Formation is a sequence of interlayered pink, maroon, and gray conglomerate, sandstone, shale, and marine limestone. The Maroon Formation is mostly reddish conglomerate and sandstone. Glacial till of both the middle Pleistocene Bull Lake and late Pleistocene Pinedale glaciations are well exposed along parts of the Gore Creek valley and its tributaries, although human development has profoundly altered the outcrop patterns along the Gore Creek valley bottom. Created using Environmental Systems Research Institute's ARC/INFO software, the data base consists of the following items: (1) a map coverage containing geologic contacts and units, (2) a coverage containing structural data, (3) a coverage containing geologic unit annotation and leaders, and (4) attribute tables for geologic units (polygons), contacts (arcs), and site-specific data (points). In addition, the data set includes the following graphic and text products: (1) a postscript graphic plot-file containing the geologic map, topography, cultural data, a Correlation of Map Units (CMU) diagram, a Description of Map Units (DMU), and a key for point and line symbols, and (2) PDF files of the Readme (including the metadata file as an appendix), and the graphic produced by the Postscript plot file. The Riverside East quadrangle is located in the northern part of the Peninsular Ranges Province within the central part of the Perris block, a relatively stable, rectangular in plan area located between the Elsinore and San Jacinto fault zones. The quadrangle is underlain predominantly by Cretaceous plutonic rocks which are part of the composite Peninsular Ranges batholith. Within the quadrangle, the batholithic rocks represent a wide variety of mafic to intermediate composition granitic rocks ranging in composition from monzogranite to gabbro, but tonalite predominates. Most of the granitic rocks are faintly to intensely foliated. Many are heterogenous and contain varying amounts of meso-and melanocratic discoidal-shaped inclusions. Some rock is composed almost wholly of inclusion material and some are migmatitic. Included within these granitic rocks are a few septa of Paleozoic(?) biotite schist, marble, and calcsilicate rock of upper amphibolite metamorphic grade. Metamorphic rocks of Paleozoic(?) age occur primarily in the northwest part of the quadrangle. These rocks include coarse-grained marble bodies that have been quarried in the past. North Hill, at the northwest corner of the quadrangle is the site of the 'Old City' quarry, where tonalite intrudes marble producing pyroxene-hornfels grade garnet-pyroxene skarn. South of Riverside several disconnected bodies of marble, impure quartzite, and calcsilicate rock were quarried at the 'New City' (Victoria Ave) quarry. There, the thicker of the two marble bodies was quarried exposing skarn developed at a contact between the marble and intrusive biotite-hornblende tonalite. The composition of the skarn is highly varied and includes pyroxene-grarnet, idocrase, scapolite-pyroxene, and magnetite-pageite skarns. Biotite-hornblende tonalite of the relatively large Val Verde pluton dominates the quadrangle west of Interstate 215. In most places this tonalite has a northwest oriented crude to well developed planar fabric produced by oriented biotite and hornblende. In the northern part of the pluton northeast striking planar fabric dominates. Schlieren and massive clots of mafic tonalite occur locally. Discoidal-to pancake-shaped mafic inclusions are widespread and are oriented in the plane of the biotite and hornblende. Typically, the planar fabric dips moderately to the northeast, but is locally horizontal to subhorizontal or grades to an isotropic fabric. Granitic rocks in the northeastern part of the quadrangle are part of the Box Springs plutonic complex. This composite intrusion is an elliptical, flat-floored granitic complex centered on the Box Springs Mountains. The exposed part of the complex is apparently the lower part of a granitic diapir. In the center of the complex massive to indistinctly primarily layered biotite tonalite grades outward into well foliated biotite tonalite. Further outward the rocks are a heterogeneous assemblage of primarily granodioritic plutonic rocks. The geologic map data base contains original U.S. Geological Survey data generated by detailed field observation recorded on 1:24,000 scale aerial photographs. The map was created by transferring lines from the aerial photographs to a 1:24,000 scale topographic base. The map was digitized and lines, points, and polygons were subsequently edited using standard ARC/INFO commands. Digitizing and editing artifacts significant enough to display at a scale of 1:24,000 were corrected. Within the database, geologic contacts are represented as lines (arcs), geologic units are polygons, and site-specific data as points. Biotite-hornblende tonalite of the relatively large Val Verde pluton dominates the quadrangle west of Interstate 215. In most places this tonalite has a northwest oriented crude to well developed planar fabric produced by oriented biotite and hornblende. In the northern part of the pluton northeast striking planar fabric dominates. Schlieren and massive clots of mafic tonalite occur locally. Discoidal-to pancake-shaped mafic inclusions are widespread and are oriented in the plane of the biotite and hornblende. Typically, the planar fabric dips moderately to the northeast, but is locally horizontal to subhorizontal or grades to an isotropic fabric. Granitic rocks in the northeastern part of the quadrangle are part of the Box Springs plutonic complex. This composite intrusion is an elliptical, flat-floored granitic complex centered on the Box Springs Mountains. The exposed part of the complex is apparently the lower part of a granitic diapir. In the center of the complex massive to indistinctly primarily layered biotite tonalite grades outward into well foliated biotite tonalite. Further outward the rocks are a heterogeneous assemblage of primarily granodioritic plutonic rocks. The geologic map data base contains original U.S. Geological Survey data generated by detailed field observation recorded on 1:24,000 scale aerial photographs. The map was created by transferring lines from the aerial photographs to a 1:24,000 scale topographic base. The map was digitized and lines, points, and polygons were subsequently edited using standard ARC/INFO commands. Digitizing and editing artifacts significant enough to display at a scale of 1:24,000 were corrected. Within the database, geologic contacts are represented as lines (arcs), geologic units are polygons, and site-specific data as points. Polygon, arc, and point attribute tables (.pat, .aat, and .pat, respectively) uniquely identify each geologic datum.

    London had the highest unemployment rate among regions of the United Kingdom in the first quarter of 2025 at ****percent, while for the UK as a whole, the unemployment rate was ****percent. Three other regions also had an unemployment rate higher than the national average, while Northern Ireland had the lowest unemployment rate in this time period, at ****percent. Labor market recovery after COVID-19 After reaching historically low levels of unemployment in 2019, there was a noticeable spike in the UK unemployment rate in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. After peaking at ****percent in late 2020, the unemployment rate declined throughout 2021 and 2022. High levels of job vacancies, resignations, and staff shortages in 2022, were all indicative of a very tight labor market that year, but all these measures have started to point in the direction of a slightly looser labor market. UK's regional economic divide While the North of England has some of the country’s largest cities, the sheer size and economic power of London is much larger than the UK's other urban agglomerations. Partly, due to the size of London, the United Kingdom is one of Europe’s most centralized counties, and there is a clear divide between the economic prospects of north and south England. In 2022, for example, the gross domestic product per head in London was ****** British pounds, far higher than the UK average of *******pounds, and significantly larger than North East England, the region with the lowest GDP per head at *******pounds.
