    BY USING THIS WEBSITE OR THE CONTENT THEREIN, YOU AGREE TO THE TERMS OF USE. A spatial representation of generalized Oakland County community master plans. These polygons were digitized from each of Oakland's 62 community's future land use map in their master plan. The data was completed in March of 2006 and will be updated as each community amends their plan. The key attribute is Composite Plan representing generalized, countywide future land uses.This data depicts a future land use based on each community's master plan as currently adopted. The data will be updated each time a community amends their master plan. Below is a list recording the master plan and date of adoption that was used to digitize each community. For example, one community may have two commercial districts- Local Commerical and General Commercial. Another community may have three commercial districts- Neighborhood Commercial, Hi-Tech Office, and Retail Commercial. A wide range of uses could be included in these categories, but for the purpose of this feature class, they are all translated into "Commercial/Office." In some cases a category on community's future land use map could not be translated into a single composite category. When this occurred, areas were manually translated into the appropriate generalized category. For example, a Public Lands class on a community's map would be manually translated into the Public/Institutional and Recreation/Conservation composite categories.

    This data archive is a collection of GIS files and FGDC metadata prepared in 1995 for the Northampton County Planning Office by the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER project at the University of Virginia with support from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Original data sources include: 1:100,000-scale USGS digital line graph (DLG) hydrography and transportation data; 1:6,000-scale boundary, road, and railroad data for the town of Cape Charles from VDOT; 1:190,000-scale county-wide general soil map data and 1:15,540-scale detailed soil data for the Cape Charles area digitized from printed USDA soil survey maps; a land use and vegetation cover dataset (30 m. resolution) created by the VCRLTER derived from a 1993 Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite image; 1:20,000-scale plant association maps for 10 seaside barrier and marsh islands between Hog and Smith Islands, inclusive, prepared by Cheryl McCaffrey for TNC in 1975 and published in the Virginia Journal of Science in 1990; and 1993 colonial bird nesting site data collected by The Center for Conservation Biology (with partners The Nature Conservancy, College of William and Mary, University of Virginia, USFWS, VA-DCR, and VA-DGIF). Contents: HYDROGRAPHY Based on USGS 1:100,000 Digital Line Graph (DLG) data. Files: h100k_arc_u84 (streams, shorelines, etc.) and h100k_poly_u84 (marshes, mudflats, etc.). Note that the hydrographic data has been superseded by the more recent and more detailed USGS National Hydrography Dataset, available for the entire state of Virginia at "ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/DataSets/Staged/States/FileGDB/HighResolution/NHDH_VA_931v210.zip" (see http://nhd.usgs.gov/data.html for more information). A static 2013 version of the NHD data that includes shapefiles extracted from the original ESRI geodatabase format data and covering just the watersheds of the Eastern Shore of VA can also be found in the VCRLTER Data Catalog (dataset VCR14223). TRANSPORTATION Based on USGS 1:100,000 Digital Line Graph (DLG) data for the full county, and 1:6,000 VDOT data for the Cape Charles township. Files: 1:100k Transportation (lines) from USGS DLG data: rtf100k_arc_u84 (roads), rrf100k_arc_u84 (railroads), and mtf100k_arc_u84 (airports and utility transmission lines). Files: 1:6000 street, boundary, and rail line data for the town of Cape Charles, 1984, prepared by Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation Information Services (Division 1221 East Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219). Streets correct through December 31,1983. Georeferencing corrected in 2014 for shapefiles only, using same methodology described for VCR14218 dataset. File : town_u84_adj (town_arc_u84old is the older unadjusted data). Note that the transportation data has been superseded by more recent and more detailed data contained in dataset VCR14222 of the VCRLTER Data Catalog. The VCR14222 data contains 2013 U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line road and airfield data supplemented by railroad and transmission lines digitized from high resolution VGIN-VBMP 2013 aerial imagery and additionally has boat launch locations not available here. SOILS General soil map for Northampton county (1:190k), and detailed soil map for Cape Charles and Cheriton areas (1:15,540) from published the USDA Soil Conservation Service's 1989 "Soil Survey of Northampton County, Virginia" digitized at UVA by Ray Dukes Smith: soilorig_poly_u84 (uses original shorelines from source maps), soil_poly_u84 (substitutes shorelines from 1993 landcover classification data), and cc_soil_poly_u84 (Cape Charles & Cheriton detailed data, map sheets 13 and 14). Note that the soil data has been superseded by more recent and more detailed SSURGO soil data from the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), which has seamless soil data from the 1:15,540 map series in tabular and GIS formats for the full county, as well as for all counties in VA and other states. A static 2013 version of the SSURGO data that contains merged data for Accomack and Northampton Counties can be found in the VCRLTER Data Catalog (dataset VCR14220). LANDUSE/LANDCOVER VCR Landuse and Vegetation Cover, 1993, created by Guofan Shao (VCRLTER) based on 30m resolution Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery taken on July 28, 1993. Cropped to include just Northampton County. Landcover is divided into 5 classifications: (1) Forest or shrub, (2) Bare Land or Sand, (3) Planted Cropland, Grassland, or Upland Marsh, (4) Open Water, and (5) Low Salt Marsh. File = nhtm93s3_poly_u84. No spatial adjustments necessary. An outline of the county showing the shorelines based on the above 1993 TM classification is included as the shapefile:outline_poly_u84; however, no spatial adjustment has been applied. Note that a similar landuse/landcover classification based on the same 1993 Landsat TM image and spanning both Accomack and Northampton Counties, VA (plus portions of MD south of Snow Hill and Princess Ann), is also available in the VCRLTER Data Catalog (dataset VCR14221). PLANT ASSOCIATIONS Barrier Island Vegetation Maps (1:20,000) for islands of the Virginia Coast Reserve (TNC) that are within Northampton County, including Wreck Island (VA DCR) but excluding Fishermans Island (US FWS). By C.A. McCaffrey, based on air photos from 1974 and subsequent ground-truthing. Individual shapefiles for each major island: hog_u84_adj, cobb_u84_adj, wreck_u84_adj, shipshoal_u84_adj, myrtle_u84_adj, and smith_u84_adj. Note that in 2014 the georeferencing was fixed, as described in VCRLTER dataset VCR14218, but was only applied to the converted shapefiles, not the original e00 files. Note that the full original dataset, including vegetation maps for Parramore, Cedar, and Metompkin Islands in Accomack County, is available in the VCRLTER Data Catalog (dataset VCR14218). BIRD NESTING SITES Nesting sites for colonial waterbirds in Northampton County, VA, 1993. File: Birds_pt_u84. Spatial location generally marks a point in the center or at the edge of the colony. No spatial adjustments deemed necessary due to the error associated with the location measurement. Attribute information includes location; species; common name; number of adults, chicks, eggs and nests; land owner; and management area. Plovers and other endangered/threatened species included in the original database are not available in this version, nor are data for nesting sites in other counties or during other years.     Description

    This GIS data package contains airborne electromagnetic (AEM) datasets and interpreted data products for the Speewa survey area, as part of the River Murray Corridor (RMC) Salinity Mapping and Interpretation Project. The RMC project was undertaken between 2006 and 2010 to provide information on a range of salinity and land management issues along a 450 kilometre reach of the Murray River from the South Australian border to Gunbower, northwest of Echuca in Victoria. The Speewa survey area extends from Speewa south to Swan Hill.

    This metadata briefly describes the contents of the data package. The user guide included in the package contains more detailed information about the individual datasets and available technical reports.

    The main components in the package are: AEM data and images derived from a holistic inversion of the RMC RESOLVE AEM survey; a composite digital elevation model (DEM); a range of interpreted data products designed to map key elements of the hydrogeological system and salinity hazards using the AEM dataset; and a series of ESRI ArcGIS map documents.

    The AEM data component consists of grids and images of modelled conductivity data derived from a holistic inversion of the RMC RESOLVE AEM survey. They include: layer conductivity grids below ground surface; depth slice grids representing the average conductivity of various regular depth intervals below ground surface; floodplain slice grids representing the average conductivity of various depth intervals relative to the elevation above or below a surface that approximates the River Murray floodplain; watertable slice grids representing the average conductivity of various intervals relative to the elevation above or below the regional watertable; and AEM cross sections of conductivity versus depth along each of the flight lines. The holistic inversion AEM data are derived from the 'River Murray Corridor RESOLVE AEM Survey, VIC & NSW, 2007 Final Data (P1141)', available as Geoscience Australia product number 67212 (GeoCat #67212).

    The DEM data component consists of a 10 metre horizontal resolution composite DEM for the River Murray Corridor AEM survey area derived from airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) surveys, AEM surveys, and the shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) survey.

    The interpreted data component is organised into product themes to address salinity and land management questions and to map key elements of the hydrogeological system and salinity hazards. An ArcGIS map document is included for each product theme. The products include: Blanchetown Clay; conductive soils; flush zones; groundwater conductivity; stratigraphic extents and reliability; near surface conductive zones; near surface resistive zones; Parilla Sands; Quaternary alluvium; recharge; salt store; surface salt; vegetation health; and Woorinen Formation.

    The RMC project was funded through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality with additional funding from the Lower Murray Catchment Management Authority (CMA), Mallee CMA, Goulburn-Murray Water and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority. The project was administered by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry through the Bureau of Rural Sciences, now known as the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES). Geoscience Australia (GA) were contracted to provide geophysical services to manage the AEM system selection and data acquisition, and to process and calibrate the AEM data. The AEM survey was flown by Fugro Airborne Geophysical Services in 2007 using the helicopter-borne RESOLVE frequency domain system. The Cooperative Research Centre for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration was sub-contracted through GA to manage the interpretation and reporting component of the RMC project.

    Description

    Reason for Selection Native grasslands and savannas are important for many endemic species, provide critical habitat and food for pollinators, and are often hotspots for biodiversity. Once a predominant ecosystem type, grasslands and savannas have significantly declined from their historical extent. In part because of the regular disturbance (e.g., mowing, fire) typically required to maintain high-quality grasslands, they are difficult to detect through remote sensing and are not well-captured by other indicators. In addition, grassland and savanna birds are experiencing significant declines and are currently off-track for meeting the SECAS 10% goal, so it is important that the Blueprint capture known and potential habitat.     Known grasslands

    Known grassland prairies dataset for the Middle Southeast subregion, provided by Toby Gray with Mississippi State University in Oct 2020 (available on request by emailing rua_mordecai@fws.gov); this is an improved version of the Known Prairie Patches in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks (GCPO) layer
    Known Piedmont prairie locations in the South Atlantic subregion: We identified known prairie locations by requesting spatial data on known prairies from the 74 members of the Piedmont Prairie Partnership mailing list and other prairie managers (Wake County Open Space program and Prairie Ridge Ecostation in NC). We combined that information with known locations in Virginia aggregated by the Virginia Natural Heritage Program (available on request by emailing rua_mordecai@fws.gov).

    Mapping Steps

    Combine all known grasslands polygons and convert to raster, assigning them a value of 7.
    From the 2021 and 2013 NLCD landcover, create rasters that only include classes likely to have grasslands and savannas. The classes included are based on NLCD classes that overlap known grassland and savanna polygons. Any class that covered >1% of known grasslands and savannas is included: 31 Barren Land, 41 Deciduous Forest, 42 Evergreen Forest, 43 Mixed Forest, 52 Scrub/Shrub, 71 Grassland/Herbaceous, 81 Pasture/Hay.
    For those 2021 and 2013 selected landcover rasters, remove forest with ≥ 60% canopy cover using NLCD USFS Tree Canopy Cover for the corresponding year. This results in potential grassland and savanna rasters for 2021 and 2013.
    Make a single potential grassland and savanna raster that only includes pixels that are potential grasslands and savannas in both 2013 and 2021. This removes temporary grasslands and savannas that result from clearcuts.
    From the Texas and Oklahoma ecological systems maps, extract classes that predict areas invaded by mesquite, a non-native tree that spreads aggressively in the grasslands and savannas of the Southwest and disrupts natural ecosystems through its heavy water consumption. For Oklahoma, this is VegName = 'Ruderal Mesquite Shrubland'. For Texas, this is CommonName = 'Native Invasive: Mesquite Shrubland'. Combine these and use them to remove areas that are no longer grassland and savanna due to mesquite invasion. The resulting layer represents potential grasslands.
    To identify potential grasslands and savannas in natural landscapes, use values 5 and 6 from the landscape condition indicator. Assign a value of 3 to any potential grassland pixel that receives a landscape condition score of 5 or 6. Assign all other potential grassland pixels a value of 2.
    To identify likely grasslands and savannas, overlay the potential grasslands and savannas raster with select polygons from PAD-US 4.0. To pull out types of protected lands that commonly manage grasslands and savannas, we used GAP status, designation type, manager name, and easement holder. We also identified a number of protected areas directly by name that had important areas of grassland and savanna but weren’t captured by the other rules.
        GAP status (GAP_sts) 1 or 2: Gap status 1 and 2 refer to areas managed for biodiversity that are not subject to extractive uses like logging and mining. GAP status 2 is technically intended to encompass areas where disturbance events are suppressed, but in practice, most protected areas in the Southeast that are actively managing grasslands and savannas are classified as GAP status 2.

These polygons were digitized from each of Oakland's 62 community's future land use map in their master plan. The data was completed in March of 2006 and will be updated as each community amends their plan. The key attribute is Composite Plan representing generalized, countywide future land uses.This data depicts a future land use based on each community's master plan as currently adopted. For example, one community may have two commercial districts- Local Commerical and General Commercial. Another community may have three commercial districts- Neighborhood Commercial, Hi-Tech Office, and Retail Commercial. A wide range of uses could be included in these categories, but for the purpose of this feature class, they are all translated into "Commercial/Office." In some cases a category on community's future land use map could not be translated into a single composite category. When this occurred, areas were manually translated into the appropriate generalized category. For example, a Public Lands class on a community's map would be manually translated into the Public/Institutional and Recreation/Conservation composite categories.
