    Description

In 2024, the number of births in South Korea stood at *******, a slight increase compared to the previous year. Around two decades earlier, this number was twice as high. Declining fertility in South Korea A phenomenon that most East Asian countries and territories grapple with is a stark decline in fertility rates. This is especially evident in South Korea, which has the lowest fertility rate in the world, far below the 2.1 children per woman threshold that represents replacement fertility. In response to the expected economic consequences of a declining population, South Korea has implemented various initiatives to encourage married couples to have children. Factors contributing to low birth rates in South Korea One major element is the societal change in attitudes toward childbirth. In a survey, half of the South Korean respondents asserted that marriages can be happy without children, and a sizable share also stated that having children was dependent on economic factors. In addition, an increasing number of South Koreans are choosing not to get married. In 2023, South Korea recorded one of the lowest numbers of marriages in its history. Furthermore, there has been a growing trend among South Korean women to prioritize their financial independence and career continuity over traditional expectations of childbearing.

    Description
    1. Data Background Hello, this is dataset about the ratio of mothers getting employed before/after birth.

It is a small dataset but I wanted to check what kind of reality mother faces when having a child. It would be nice if I can compare the data with other countries, but I only got South Korea data :(. If anyone has similar dataset that I can compare with, it would be interesting to work on together!

Being a mother is definitely a bless and something to be celebrated, but it is also evident that there are lots of things to give up for child. I believe biggest risk that mother sacrifices most is their 'career.'

South Korea is well known for extremely low annual birth rate. According to recent statistics, 0.92 child are born per woman (2019). Low annual birth rate implies how hostile social environment is to have child and make family. Politicians are coming up with new support policies to improve low birth rate issue, but still it's not working well.

Hope South Korea become a bright society where mothers can pursue their career!

    Description

The statistic shows the total population of South Korea from 1980 to 2024, with projections up until 2030. In 2024, the total population of South Korea was about 51.75 million people. Population of South Korea South Korea, also called Republic of Korea, has one of the highest population densities worldwide, i.e. a very high number of inhabitants per square kilometer. However, this does not equal bad standard of living; on the Human Development Index, which ranks countries by their level of living standards using key factors, such as unemployment rate, literacy rate, fertility and mortality rates, etc., South Korea is among the highest-ranked countries. When looking at the aforementioned key factors, South Korea indeed seems to offer a fairly stable environment for its inhabitants, economically and demographically: The country’s unemployment rate has been relatively steady for the past decade, its gross domestic product (GDP) is constantly increasing, and it is among the countries with the highest trade surplus worldwide. As for standard of living, life expectancy at birth in South Korea is among the highest worldwide – South Korea is even mentioned in a recent ranking of the best birthplaces for children. Despite the high population density, South Korea is now one of the countries with the lowest fertility rates, i.e. the number of babies born by women of childbearing age. This apparent discrepancy could be explained by a high number of immigrants coupled with the aforementioned high life expectancy.

    Description

BackgroundNon-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), such as social distancing and hand washing, have been associated with a decline in the preterm birth rate worldwide. We aimed to evaluate whether the preterm birth rate in Korea during the coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown has changed compared to that in previous years.MethodA birth registry from the Korea Statistical Information Service, which is a nationwide official database, was used to include all births claimed to have occurred between 2011 and 2020. Newborns with gestational age (GA) less than 22 weeks and birth weight less than 220 g were excluded. The pre-NPI period was designated as January 2011 to January 2020, and the NPI period was defined as February 2020 to December 2020. We assessed the effect of NPI on the incidence of prematurity per 100 births using an interrupted time-series quasi-experimental design and implementing an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model.ResultsFrom 2011 to 2020, a total of 3,931,974 live births were registered, among which 11,416 were excluded. Consequently, the final study population included 3,920,558 live births (both singleton and multiple births) among which 275,009 (7.0%) were preterm. The preterm birth rate was significantly higher during the NPI period (8.68%) compared to that in the pre-NPI period (6.92%) (P

    Description

IntroductionChildren who have experienced the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are at an increased risk of adverse neurologic developmental outcomes. Limited data exist on the environmental influences of during the COVID-19 pandemic on preterm infant development. This study aimed to investigate whether COVID-19 exposure affects the neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm children up to 3 years of age.MethodsThis prospective cohort study included all very low birth weight (VLBW) infants from the Korean Neonatal Network who had undergone a neurodevelopmental assessment between January 2015, and May 2022. The neurodevelopmental outcomes along with the scores on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID) and the Korean Developmental Screening Test for Infants and Children of pediatric patients aged 18–24 and 33–39 months who were exposed to COVID-19 were compared with those of VLBW children born and tested before the pandemic.ResultsThe cohort included 1,683 VLBW infants. The pandemic group had significantly lower language scores on the BSID-III at ages 18–24 months (p = 0.021) and 33–39 months (p = 0.023) than the pre-pandemic group after adjusting for gestational age, morbidity, and environmental factors. At 2nd follow-up period, the pandemic group showed significantly lower scores in the cognitive (p = 0.026) domains with a mean difference of 7 points and had a significantly higher percentage of ≤−1SD in the gross motor domain (p < 0.001) compared with the pre-pandemic group.ConclusionPreterm children who experienced the COVID-19 pandemic are at higher risk of abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes in the first 3 years of life than preterm infants born before the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Description

With an average of *** births per woman, Afghanistan had the highest fertility rate throughout the Asia-Pacific region in 2025. Pakistan and Papua New Guinea followed with the second- and third-highest fertility rates, respectively. In contrast, South Korea and Macao had the lowest fertility rates across the region. Contraception usage Fertility rates among women in the Asia-Pacific region have fallen throughout recent years. A likely reason is an increase in contraception use. However, contraception usage varies greatly throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Although contraception prevalence is set to increase across South Asia by 2030, women in both East Asia and Southeast Asia had higher contraception usage compared to South Asia in 2019. Women in APAC With the rise of feminism and the advancement of human rights, attitudes towards the role of women have changed in the Asia-Pacific region. Achieving gender equality has become a vital necessity for both men and women throughout the region. Alongside changes in traditional gender roles, women in certain Asia-Pacific countries, such as New Zealand, have become more inclined to marry later in life. Furthermore, the focus for younger women appears to be on having stability in their lives and securing an enjoyable job. This was displayed when female high school students in Japan were questioned about their future life aspirations.

    Description

Among all countries that are part of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Turkey, followed by Korea, had the highest rate of Caesarean section births (or C-sections) in 2022. At that time, the rate of C-sections in Turkey was roughly 600 per 1,000 live births. Among global regions, Latin America and the Caribbean had the highest percentage of births that were delivered by C-section, while sub-Saharan Africa had the lowest rates of Cesarean section births. Cesarean section costs A Cesarean section is a form of birth where the baby is taken out through a surgical incision in the abdomen rather than a natural vaginal birth. The cost of a Cesarean section delivery varies globally, with the United States having the highest cost globally for Cesarean section deliveries, while Germany the lowest cost among selected countries worldwide. In the United States, C-sections are significantly more expensive than a delivery by vaginal birth. High C-sections rates in the U.S. Over the past 20 years the C-section rate in the U.S. has gradually been increasing with more stable trends in the past few years. It has been reported that many of the C-sections performed in the U.S. are elective and not necessary. Often, the risks of C-sections are greater than the benefits, when performed as an elective procedure. Therefore, the United States has a "healthy people target" for the c-section rate of first time, low-risk mothers. However, less than half of hospitals are meeting the national targets for Cesarean sections performed.
