    Description

A simple dataset for states in the USA, including Washington DC, showing the average literacy rates along with population estimates for 2017. The national average for literacy is 264.

The USAFacts dataset contains the average literacy scores for the years 2012-2017, therefore I decided to use the estimate for the 2017 population from the Census data. I believe this is a decent snapshot in time for comparing literacy to population, looking for any correlations.

    Description

The statistic depicts the literacy rate in Mexico from 2008 to 2020. The literacy rate measures the percentage of people ages 15 and above who can read and write. In 2020, Mexico's literacy rate was around 95.25 percent. The source does not provide data for 2019.Education in MexicoThe literacy rate is commonly defined as the share of people in a country who are older than 15 years and are able to read and write. In Mexico, a state with more than 115 million inhabitants, the literacy rate is above 90 percent, making it significantly higher than the global average. More than 70 percent of Mexico’s population is older than 15 years, a figure than has been quite consistent over the last ten years. Mexico’s compulsory education comprises grades 1 to 9, with an optional secondary education up to grade 12. Literacy is considered basic education. The lowest literacy rates can be found in African countries, the highest in Europe. Additionally, the literacy rate is one of the factors that determines a country’s ranking on the Human Development Index of the United Nations, which ranks the overall well-being of a country’s population. Apart from literacy, it also includes factors such as per-capita income, health and life expectancy and others. Mexico is currently not among the countries with the highest Human Development Index value.

    Description

Literacy in India has been increasing as more and more people receive a better education, but it is still far from all-encompassing. In 2023, the degree of literacy in India was about 77 percent, with the majority of literate Indians being men. It is estimated that the global literacy rate for people aged 15 and above is about 86 percent. How to read a literacy rateIn order to identify potential for intellectual and educational progress, the literacy rate of a country covers the level of education and skills acquired by a country’s inhabitants. Literacy is an important indicator of a country’s economic progress and the standard of living – it shows how many people have access to education. However, the standards to measure literacy cannot be universally applied. Measures to identify and define illiterate and literate inhabitants vary from country to country: In some, illiteracy is equated with no schooling at all, for example. Writings on the wallGlobally speaking, more men are able to read and write than women, and this disparity is also reflected in the literacy rate in India – with scarcity of schools and education in rural areas being one factor, and poverty another. Especially in rural areas, women and girls are often not given proper access to formal education, and even if they are, many drop out. Today, India is already being surpassed in this area by other emerging economies, like Brazil, China, and even by most other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. To catch up, India now has to offer more educational programs to its rural population, not only on how to read and write, but also on traditional gender roles and rights.

    Description

There is a gender gap in the global literacy rate. Although literacy rates have generally increased worldwide for both men and women, men are on average more literate than women. As of 2024, about 90.91 percent of men and a little less than 88.8 percent of women worldwide were literate. Adult literacy rate is defined as the percentage of people aged 15 years and above who can both read and write with understanding a short, simple statement about their everyday life. Youth literacy rate Not only does the literacy gender gap concern adults, it also exists among the world’s younger generations aged 15 to 24. Despite an overall increase in literacy, young men are still more literate than young women. In fact, the global youth literacy rate as gender parity index was 0.98 as of 2023, indicating that young women are not yet as literate as young men. Gender pay gap Gender gaps occur in many different spheres of global society. One such issue concerns salary gender gaps in professional life. Regarding the controlled gender pay gap, which measures the median salary for men and women with the same job and qualifications, women still earned less than men as of 2024. The difference was even bigger when measuring the median salary for all men and women. However, not everyone worries about gender pay gaps. According to a survey from 2021, 54 percent of the female respondents deemed the gender pay gap a real problem, compared to 45 percent of the male respondents.

    Literacy Rate Content

Literacy rate in India is uneven and as such, different states and union territories of India have differences in their literacy rates. The following table shows the details from 1951 to 2011 census data on total literacy rate in percentage.[2][3] According to Census 2011, Kerala has the highest total literacy rate and female literacy rate whereas Lakshadweep had the highest male literacy rate. Andhra Pradesh has the lowest overall literacy rate. Rajasthan has the lowest male literacy rate, while Bihar has the lowest female literacy rate. Literacy figures are collected by census takers which essentially means literacy (or lack therefore) is self assessed.

    **Univercity List CONTENT **

The higher education system in India includes both private and public universities. Public universities are supported by the Government of India and the state governments, while private universities are mostly supported by various bodies and societies. Universities in India are recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which draws its power from the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.[1] In addition, 15 Professional Councils are established, controlling different aspects of accreditation and co-ordination.

    The types of universities include

    • Central universities, or Union universities, are established by an Act of Parliament and are under the purview of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education.[3] As of 18 October 2022, the list of central universities published by the UGC includes 54 active central universities

    - State universities are run by the state government of each of the states and territories of India and are usually established by a local legislative assembly act. As of 23 August 2022, the UGC lists 455 active state universities

    - Deemed university, or "Deemed to be University", is a status of autonomy granted by the Department of Higher Education on the advice of the UGC, under Section 3 of the UGC Act.[8] As of 30 November 2021, the UGC lists 126 institutes which were granted the deemed to be university status.[9] According to this list, the first institute to be granted deemed university status was Indian Institute of Science, which was granted this status on 12 May 1958. In many cases, the same listing by the UGC covers several institutes.

    • **Private universities **are approved by the UGC. They can grant degrees but they are not allowed to have off-campus affiliated colleges. As of 23 August 2022, the UGC consolidated list of universities lists 421 private universities

By 2020, around 86.8 percent of the world population aged 15 years and above had been able to read and write. While in developed regions this figure ranged a lot higher, only around 67 percent of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa was literate. Countries with the lowest literacy rates are also the most underdeveloped worldwide. According to UNESCO, literacy is a human right, especially in a fast-changing and technology-driven world. In China, the literacy rate has developed from 79 percent in 1982 to 97 percent in 2020, indicating that almost one million people per year had become literate over three decades. In India, the situation was entirely different. The second most populous country in the world displayed a literacy rate of merely 76 percent in 2022.

    Literacy in China

The dramatic increase in literacy in China has a lot to do with the efficacy of numerous political, economic and educational policies. In 1982, compulsory education was written into the Chinese constitution, postulating a nine-year compulsory education funded by the government. As is shown by the graph above, there was a large gender gap in literacy rate in China as of 1982. Though this gap still existed in 2020, it was narrowed down to three percent, starting from 28 percent in 1982. Since 1990, the national education policy was directed at females, especially from poor and/or minority families. Over the past years, China has achieved gender parity in primary schooling.

However, regional literacy disparities in China should not to be overlooked. Regions with a strong economic background tend to display illiteracy rates below national average. In contrast, economically underdeveloped regions have a much larger share of people who cannot read nor write. Tibet for instance, a region where 92 percent of the population belong to an ethnic minority, showed the highest illiterate rate nationwide, with around 34 percent in 2022.

    Touch-and-Feel Board Books Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the Global Touch-and-Feel Board Books market size was valued at $1.2 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $2.1 billion by 2033, expanding at a robust CAGR of 6.5% during 2024–2033. The primary factor fueling this growth globally is the increasing parental and institutional emphasis on early childhood sensory development. As caregivers and educators become more aware of the critical role tactile stimulation plays in cognitive and motor skill development, demand for touch-and-feel board books has surged. These books, known for their durability and interactive sensory elements, are rapidly becoming a staple in households, preschools, and libraries worldwide, driving market expansion across both developed and emerging economies.

    Regional Outlook

North America currently commands the largest share of the global Touch-and-Feel Board Books market, accounting for over 35% of total revenue in 2024. The region’s dominance is underpinned by a mature publishing industry, high literacy rates, and a strong culture of early childhood education. In the United States and Canada, parents and educators are highly receptive to innovative educational tools, and publishers are quick to integrate new sensory elements and themes. Moreover, robust distribution networks, including well-established bookstores, specialty retailers, and online platforms, ensure widespread accessibility. The presence of leading market players and frequent product launches further consolidate North America’s leadership in the touch-and-feel board books segment.

Asia Pacific is emerging as the fastest-growing region, projected to register a remarkable CAGR of over 8.2% through 2033. The rapid expansion is driven by rising disposable incomes, urbanization, and a growing focus on early childhood learning in countries such as China, India, and Japan. Governments and private institutions are increasingly investing in educational resources, including tactile learning materials. Additionally, the proliferation of e-commerce platforms has made these books more accessible to a broader consumer base, even in semi-urban and rural areas. Local publishers are also innovating with culturally relevant content and affordable pricing strategies, further accelerating adoption and market penetration across the region.

In emerging economies across Latin America and the Middle East & Africa, the adoption of touch-and-feel board books is gaining momentum, albeit from a smaller base. These regions face unique challenges, including lower literacy rates, limited distribution infrastructure, and price sensitivity. However, policy initiatives aimed at improving early childhood education and increasing public library outreach are beginning to have a positive impact. Localized content development and partnerships with non-governmental organizations are helping to bridge adoption gaps. As awareness of the benefits of sensory learning grows, these markets are expected to contribute significantly to global demand, albeit at a more gradual pace compared to developed regions.
