Comparative Analysis of MLB Players wOBA Statistics

Analyzing Skillsets in The Old Ballgame

    By Devi Ramanan [source]

    About this dataset

This dataset features a comprehensive look into the performance of 311 professional Major League Baseball players. It comprises key batting statistics including name, team, age, plate appearances (PA), batting average (AVG), on-base plus slugging percentage - average (OBP-AVG), isolated power (ISO), stolen bases (SB), and ultimate zone rating per 150 games (UZR/150). Additionally, the dataset contains more detailed and complex metrics for each player such as weighted values for singles (1Bw), doubles (2Bw), triples(3Bw), home runs(HRw) unintentional walks(uBBw), hit by pitches(HBPw) ,stolen bases attempted/successful(SBW/CSW) and weighted On-Base Average(WOBA). All these data points create an effective way to measure the offensive performance that is both insightful and objective. Jeff Long's Spira Award winning article analyzed this very same data to compare MLB players who have similar skillsets than would otherwise be expected

    How to use the dataset

This dataset can be used to analyse the wOBA stats of MLB players with at least 250 plate appearances (PA). This dataset has data on 31 baseball players. The data includes the player's name, their team, age, PA, batting average (AVG), on-base percentage minus batting average (OBP-AVG), isolated power (ISO), stolen bases (SB), Ultimate Zone Rating per 150 games (UZR/150), weighted value of singles(1Bw) , weighted value of doubles(2Bw) , weighted value of triples(3Bw) , weighted value of home runs(HRw) ,weighted value of unintentional walks(uBBw) ,weighted value of hit by pitches(HBPw )and stolen base attempt success rate (CSW). By using this dataset you can compare different MLB Players' stats in the same year.

    Research Ideas

    • Analyzing and predicting batting performance. With this dataset, researchers could create models to observe correlations between batting metrics such as strikeouts, walks, home runs, stolen bases etc and overall wOBA scores for the players. This could be used to generate insights into the most important batting factors that contribute the greatest benefit for a team's success.
    • Comparing players from different teams in terms of their batting performance. By comparing two players with similar stats (for example two offensive power hitters) across different teams it would be possible to analyze whether certain teams consistently have better offensive players or if they just have higher quantity in particular positions of play.
    • Creating a predictive model for MLB draft prospects or free agents signing potentials based on their stats and previous yearly changes in OBP-AVG or UZR/150 score could provide meaningful insight into which emerging talents are likely to see substantial improvement in their career trajectory over time when compared with aging stars who may gradually decline over time due to age related attrition factors such as injury and fatigue amongst others

This public data includes pitch-by-pitch data for Major League Baseball (MLB) games in 2016. This dataset contains the following tables: games_wide (every pitch, steal, or lineup event for each at bat in the 2016 regular season), games_post_wide(every pitch, steal, or lineup event for each at-bat in the 2016 post season), and schedules ( the schedule for every team in the regular season). The schemas for the games_wide and games_post_wide tables are identical. With this data you can effectively replay a game and rebuild basic statistics for players and teams. Description

Analysis of ‘Moneyball’ provided by Analyst-2 (analyst-2.ai), based on source dataset retrieved from https://www.kaggle.com/wduckett/moneyball-mlb-stats-19622012 on 30 September 2021.

--- Dataset description provided by original source is as follows ---

    Context

In the early 2000s, Billy Beane and Paul DePodesta worked for the Oakland Athletics. While there, they literally changed the game of baseball. They didn't do it using a bat or glove, and they certainly didn't do it by throwing money at the issue; in fact, money was the issue. They didn't have enough of it, but they were still expected to keep up with teams that had much deeper pockets. This is where Statistics came riding down the hillside on a white horse to save the day. This data set contains some of the information that was available to Beane and DePodesta in the early 2000s, and it can be used to better understand their methods.

    Content

This data set contains a set of variables that Beane and DePodesta focused heavily on. They determined that stats like on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG) were very important when it came to scoring runs, however they were largely undervalued by most scouts at the time. This translated to a gold mine for Beane and DePodesta. Since these players weren't being looked at by other teams, they could recruit these players on a small budget. The variables are as follows:

    • Team
    • League
    • Year
    • Runs Scored (RS)
    • Runs Allowed (RA)
    • Wins (W)
    • On-Base Percentage (OBP)
    • Slugging Percentage (SLG)
    • Batting Average (BA)
    • Playoffs (binary)
    • RankSeason
    • RankPlayoffs
    • Games Played (G)
    • Opponent On-Base Percentage (OOBP)
    • Opponent Slugging Percentage (OSLG)

    Acknowledgements

This data set is referenced in The Analytics Edge course on EdX during the lecture regarding the story of Moneyball. The data itself is gathered from baseball-reference.com. Sports-reference.com is one of the most comprehensive sports statistics resource available, and I highly recommend checking it out.

    Inspiration

It is such an important skill in today's world to be able to see the "truth" in a data set. That is what DePodesta was able to do with this data, and it unsettled the entire system of baseball recruitment. Beane and DePodesta defined their season goal as making it to playoffs. With that in mind, consider these questions:

    • How does a team make the playoffs?
    • How does a team win more games?
    • How does a team score more runs?

They are all simple questions with simple answers, but now it is time to use the data to find the "truth" hidden in the numbers.

    Description

Based on the longitudinal data of 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams over seasons from 2017 to 2020, we used random effect (RE) models to conduct regression analyses on the detailed data of pitchers and fielders. Cultural distance (CD) was measured in terms of Hofstede’s cultural indicators and Global Preference Survey (GPS) data. The results showed that salary premiums for foreign MLB players existed and CD was significantly positively correlated with salaries. Further, the risk preference (/altruism) difference between foreign pitchers and American pitchers was significantly positively (/negatively) correlated with the salaries of foreign pitchers. Salary estimation data showed that the salary premium was nearly 20% for players from South Korea and Panama, the lowest (only 0.11%) for players from Australia, and only 6.13% for players from Dominican Republic (accounting for the largest proportion of foreign MLB players), indicating that the MLB’s foreign player recruitment policy is correct.

In 2025, the Major League Baseball (MLB) team with the lowest franchise value was the Miami Marlins. The Florida-based team had a franchise value of 1.05 billion U.S. dollars that year. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees ranked as the most valuable franchise in 2025, with a value of 8.2 billion U.S. dollars. MLB revenue streams Major League Baseball teams have numerous sponsorship deals, which provide them with income from advertising on stadiums and in broadcast media. Another revenue stream for MLB teams is the sale of food, drinks, and other concessions at games. This includes the sale of traditional game day fare such as hot dogs, popcorn, and beer, as well as official merchandise such as jerseys, caps, and other memorabilia which provide additional revenue streams for the franchise. Take me out to the ball game MLB teams also generate revenue from ticket sales for regular season and playoff games, which includes individual game tickets, season tickets, and suite rentals. Overall, MLB attendance is consistently high, with many teams regularly selling out their stadiums. Despite a significant reduction in 2021 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, attendance at MLB matches has rebounded in recent years, exceeding 28.5 thousand in 2024.
