Because of the “curse of dimensionality,” high-dimensional processes present challenges to traditional multivariate statistical process monitoring (SPM) techniques. In addition, the unknown underlying distribution of and complicated dependency among variables such as heteroscedasticity increase the uncertainty of estimated parameters and decrease the effectiveness of control charts. In addition, the requirement of sufficient reference samples limits the application of traditional charts in high-dimension, low-sample-size scenarios (small n, large p). More difficulties appear when detecting and diagnosing abnormal behaviors caused by a small set of variables (i.e., sparse changes). In this article, we propose two change-point–based control charts to detect sparse shifts in the mean vector of high-dimensional heteroscedastic processes. Our proposed methods can start monitoring when the number of observations is a lot smaller than the dimensionality. The simulation results show that the proposed methods are robust to nonnormality and heteroscedasticity. Two real data examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control charts in high-dimensional applications. The R codes are provided online.

TwitterSynchronization of variable trajectories from batch process data is a delicate operation that can induce artifacts in the definition of multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) models for real-time monitoring of batch processes. The current paper introduces a new synchronization-free approach for online batch MSPC. This approach is based on the use of local MSPC models that cover a normal operating conditions (NOC) trajectory defined from principal component analysis (PCA) modeling of non-synchronized historical batches. The rationale behind is that, although non-synchronized NOC batches are used, an overall NOC trajectory with a consistent evolution pattern can be described, even if batch-to-batch natural delays and differences between process starting and end points exist. Afterwards, the local MSPC models are used to monitor the evolution of new batches and derive the related MSPC chart. During the real-time monitoring of a new batch, this strategy allows testing whether every new observation is following or not the NOC trajectory. For a NOC observation, an additional indication of the batch process progress is provided based on the identification of the local MSPC model that provides the lowest residuals. When an observation deviates from the NOC behavior, contribution plots based on the projection of the observation to the best local MSPC model identified in the last NOC observation are used to diagnose the variables related to the fault. This methodology is illustrated using two real examples of NIR-monitored batch processes: a fluidized bed drying process and a batch distillation of gasoline blends with ethanol.

Del Castillo and Zhao have recently proposed a new methodology for the Statistical Process Control (SPC) of discrete parts whose 3-dimensional (3D) geometrical data are acquired with non-contact sensors. The approach is based on monitoring the spectrum of the Laplace–Beltrami (LB) operator of each scanned part estimated using finite element methods (FEM). The spectrum of the LB operator is an intrinsic summary of the geometry of a part, independent of the ambient space. Hence, registration of scanned parts is unnecessary when comparing them. The primary goal of this case study paper is to demonstrate the practical implementation of the spectral SPC methodology through multiple examples using real scanned parts acquired with an industrial-grade laser scanner, including 3D-printed parts and commercial parts. We discuss the scanned mesh preprocessing needed in practice, including the type of remeshing found to be most beneficial for the FEM computations. For each part type, both the “phase I” and “phase II” stages of the spectral SPC methodology are showcased. In addition, we provide a new principled method to determine the number of eigenvalues of the LB operator to consider for efficient SPC of a given part geometry, and present an improved algorithm to automatically define a region of interest, particularly useful for large meshes. Computer codes that implement every method discussed in this paper, as well as all scanned part datasets used in the case studies, are made available and explained in the supplementary materials.

In monitoring an ordered stream of discrete items from a repetitive process, the geometric CUSUM chart may be used to detect sudden shifts from an acceptable level for a process-proportion (p) such as fraction nonconforming. Much of the investigative effort for this CUSUM scheme has been concentrated on the detection of upward shifts, and a recent paper has provided guidance to quality engineers in choosing the parameters (k, h) of such a scheme. In this article, the corresponding task of aiding the choice of parameters for detecting a downward shift is addressed. It is shown, using extensive numerical investigations, that the use of a value for the parameter k based on the Sequential Probability Ratio is not optimal when one is using steady-state evaluation of the detection performance of the CUSUM scheme. Tables are presented listing recommended values of parameters for detection of five sizes of downward shift, for each of 27 in-control levels for p in the range 0.20 to 0.001. Interpolation and extrapolation to find parameter values for other in-control levels of p are also considered, and a range of examples presented. There is an equivalence between a geometric CUSUM scheme and a Bernoulli CUSUM scheme, so that the results of this investigation may also be used in choosing parameter values for a Bernoulli CUSUM chart.

In statistical process monitoring, control charts typically depend on a set of tuning parameters besides its control limit(s). Proper selection of these tuning parameters is crucial to their performance. In a specific application, a control chart is often designed for detecting a target process distributional shift. In such cases, the tuning parameters should be chosen such that some characteristic of the out-of-control (OC) run length of the chart, such as its average, is minimized for detecting the target shift, while the control limit is set to maintain a desired in-control (IC) performance. However, explicit solutions for such a design are unavailable for most control charts, and thus numerical optimization methods are needed. In such cases, Monte Carlo-based methods are often a viable alternative for finding suitable design constants. The computational cost associated with such scenarios is often substantial, and thus computational efficiency is a key requirement. To address this problem, a two-step design based on stochastic approximations is presented in this paper, which is shown to be much more computationally efficient than some representative existing methods. A detailed discussion about the new algorithm’s implementation along with some examples are provided to demonstrate the broad applicability of the proposed methodology for the optimal design of univariate and multivariate control charts. The occurrence of dissolved lead and manganese in sampled groundwater, prior to its distribution or treatment, is related to the potential presence of source minerals and specific environmental factors including hydrologic position along the flow path, water-rock interactions, and associated geochemical conditions such as pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. A DO/pH framework is proposed as a screening tool for evaluating risk of elevated lead or manganese, based on the occurrence of elevated lead and manganese concentrations and the corresponding distributions of DO and pH in 258 wells screened in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain aquifers. TwitterA comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) statistical framework consists of three major phases: Phase 1—Preliminary raw data sets exploration, including time formatting and combining datasets of different lengths and different time intervals; Phase 2—QA of the datasets, including detecting and flagging of duplicates, outliers, and extreme values; and Phase 3—the development of time series of a desired frequency, imputation of missing values, visualization and a final statistical summary. The time series data collected at the Billy Barr meteorological station (East River Watershed, Colorado) were analyzed. The developed statistical framework is suitable for both real-time and post-data-collection QA/QC analysis of meteorological datasets.The files that are in this data package include one excel file, converted to CSV format (Billy_Barr_raw_qaqc.csv) that contains the raw meteorological data, i.e., input data used for the QA/QC analysis. The second CSV file (Billy_Barr_1hr.csv) is the QA/QC and flagged meteorological data, i.e., output data from the QA/QC analysis. The last file (QAQC_Billy_Barr_2021-03-22.R) is a script written in R that implements the QA/QC and flagging process. TwitterBatch effects are technical sources of variation introduced by the necessity of conducting gene expression analyses on different dates due to the large number of biological samples in population-based studies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performances of linear mixed models (LMM) and Combat in batch effect removal. We also assessed the utility of adding quality control samples in the study design as technical replicates. In order to do so, we simulated gene expression data by adding “treatment” and batch effects to a real gene expression dataset. The performances of LMM and Combat, with and without quality control samples, are assessed in terms of sensitivity and specificity while correcting for the batch effect using a wide range of effect sizes, statistical noise, sample sizes and level of balanced/unbalanced designs. The simulations showed small differences among LMM and Combat. LMM identifies stronger relationships between big effect sizes and gene expression than Combat, while Combat identifies in general more true and false positives than LMM. However, these small differences can still be relevant depending on the research goal. When any of these methods are applied, quality control samples did not reduce the batch effect, showing no added value for including them in the study design.

TwitterFrom October 2017 through September 2022, the National Water Quality Network (NWQN) monitored 110 surface-water river and stream sites and more than 1,800 groundwater wells for a large number of water-quality analytes, for which associated quality-control data and corresponding statistical summaries are included in this data release. The quality-control data—for samples that were collected in the field (at all 110 surface-water sites, 350 groundwater wells, and 16 quality-control-only sites), prepared in the laboratory, or prepared by a third party—can be used to assess the quality of environmental data collected by the NWQN through the estimation of bias and variability in reported results. The general analyte groups that were monitored at NWQN surface-water and (or) groundwater sites and have associated quality-control data in this data release include major ions, nutrients, trace elements, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, hormones, pharmaceuticals, radionuclides, microbial indicators, sediment, and environmental tracers. For each analyte group, the data tables contain results for one or more of the following types of quality-control samples, where relevant: blanks, matrix spikes, and replicates collected at field sites; laboratory blanks, reagent spikes, and matrix spikes prepared by the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) (quality-control samples prepared by other analyzing laboratories are not included in the current data release); and third-party blanks, spikes, and reference samples prepared by the USGS Quality Systems Branch (QSB). Control charts are popular tools in the statistical process control toolkit and the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart is one of its essential component for efficient process monitoring. In the present study, a new Bayesian Modified-EWMA chart is proposed for the monitoring of the location parameter in a process. Four various loss functions and a conjugate prior distribution are used in this study. The average run length is used as a performance evaluation tool for the proposed chart and its counterparts. The results advocate that the proposed chart performs very well for the monitoring of small to moderate shifts in the process and beats the existing counterparts. The significance of the proposed scheme has proved through two real-life examples: (1) For the monitoring of the reaming process which is used in the mechanical industry. (2) For the monitoring of golf ball performance in the sports industry.

The CUSUM chart is good enough to detect small-to-moderate shifts in the process parameter(s) as it can be optimally designed to detect a particular shift size. The adaptive CUSUM (ACUSUM) chart provides good detection over a range of shift sizes because of its ability to update the reference parameter using the estimated process shift. In this paper, we propose auxiliary-information-based (AIB) optimal CUSUM (OCUSUM) and ACUSUM charts, named AIB-OCUSUM and AIB-ACUSUM charts, using a difference estimator of the process mean. The performance comparisons between existing and proposed charts are made in terms of the average run length (ARL), extra quadratic loss and integral relative ARL measures. It is found that the AIB-OCUSUM and AIB-ACUSUM charts are more sensitive than the AIB-CUSUM and ACUSUM charts, respectively. Moreover, the AIB-ACUSUM chart surpasses the AIB-OCUSUM chart when detecting a range of mean shift sizes. Illustrative examples are given to support the theory.

The main objective of this survey is to provide statistical data on Information and Communication Technology in the Palestine in addition to providing data on the following: -
· Prevalence of computers and access to the Internet. · Study the penetration and purpose of Technology use.

Sample survey data [ssd]
Sampling Frame The sampling frame consists of a list of enumeration areas adopted in the Population, Housing and Establishments Census of 2007. Each enumeration area has an average size of about 124 households. These were used in the first phase as Preliminary Sampling Units in the process of selecting the survey sample.
Sample Size The total sample size of the survey was 7,268 households, of which 6,000 responded.
Sample Design The sample is a stratified clustered systematic random sample. The design comprised three phases:
Phase I: Random sample of 240 enumeration areas. Phase II: Selection of 25 households from each enumeration area selected in phase one using systematic random selection. Phase III: Selection of an individual (10 years or more) in the field from the selected households; KISH TABLES were used to ensure indiscriminate selection.
Sample Strata Distribution of the sample was stratified by: 1- Governorate (16 governorates, J1). 2- Type of locality (urban, rural and camps).

The survey questionnaire consists of identification data, quality controls and three main sections: Section I: Data on household members that include identification fields, the characteristics of household members (demographic and social) such as the relationship of individuals to the head of household, sex, date of birth and age.
Section II: Household data include information regarding computer processing, access to the Internet, and possession of various media and computer equipment. This section includes information on topics related to the use of computer and Internet, as well as supervision by households of their children (5-17 years old) while using the computer and Internet, and protective measures taken by the household in the home.
Section III: Data on persons (aged 10 years and over) about computer use, access to the Internet and possession of a mobile phone.
Preparation of Data Entry Program: This stage included preparation of the data entry programs using an ACCESS package and defining data entry control rules to avoid errors, plus validation inquiries to examine the data after it had been captured electronically.
Data Entry: The data entry process started on 8 May 2014 and ended on 23 June 2014. The data entry took place at the main PCBS office and in field offices using 28 data clerks.
Editing and Cleaning procedures: Several measures were taken to avoid non-sampling errors. These included editing of questionnaires before data entry to check field errors, using a data entry application that does not allow mistakes during the process of data entry, and then examining the data by using frequency and cross tables. This ensured that data were error free; cleaning and inspection of the anomalous values were conducted to ensure harmony between the different questions on the questionnaire.

There are many aspects of the concept of data quality; this includes the initial planning of the survey to the dissemination of the results and how well users understand and use the data. Statistical Errors Data of this survey may be affected by statistical errors due to the use of a sample and not a complete enumeration. Therefore, certain differences can be expected in comparison with the real values obtained through censuses. Variances were calculated for the most important indicators.
Variance calculations revealed that there is no problem in disseminating results nationally or regionally (the West Bank, Gaza Strip), but some indicators show high variance by governorate, as noted in the tables of the main report.
Non-Statistical Errors Non-statistical errors are possible at all stages of the project, during data collection or processing. These are referred to as non-response errors, response errors, interviewing errors and data entry errors. To avoid errors and reduce their effects, strenuous efforts were made to train the field workers intensively. They were trained on how to carry out the interview, what to discuss and what to avoid, and practical and theoretical training took place during the training course. Training manuals were provided for each section of the questionnaire, along with practical exercises in class and instructions on how to approach respondents to reduce refused cases. Data entry staff were trained on the data entry program, which was tested before starting the data entry process.
