    About this release

This statistical release provides information on trends and patterns in the handling of freight traffic at UK sea ports in terms of cargo (units and tonnage) as well as the route taken.

    Overview of port freight statistics

In 2021, a total of 445.5 million tonnes of cargo were handled at all UK ports, a 2% increase on 2020 but remaining 8% lower than 2019, suggesting that the COVID-19 pandemic continued to have an impact on cargo volumes.

Below is a summary of the main points from the latest port freight trends.

    In 2021:

    • both major and minor ports tonnage showed some recovery in 2021, but remain below 2019 levels
    • domestic traffic increased by 9% from 2020, reflecting an increase in one port and coastwise traffic
    • international imports showed some recovery but remain 8% lower than pre pandemic levels, whereas international exports are continuing to decline following the downward trend seen since 2018
    • London handled the most traffic in 2021 of all UK ports, accounting for 12% of all UK traffic, followed closely by Grimsby and Immingham (11%)
    • oil products and accompanied roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) traffic account for the majority of the decline in tonnage since 2017
    • dry bulk tonnage has increased, likely driven by biomass (organic material used as a renewable energy source) and aggregates (sand and gravel used for construction)

    Description

This is a monthly report on publicly funded community services for children, young people and adults using data from the Community Services Data Set (CSDS) reported in England for November 2020. The CSDS is a patient-level dataset and has been developed to help achieve better outcomes for children, young people and adults. It provides data that will be used to commission services in a way that improves health, reduces inequalities, and supports service improvement and clinical quality. These services can include NHS Trusts, health centres, schools, mental health trusts, and local authorities. The data collected in CSDS includes personal and demographic information, diagnoses including long-term conditions and disabilities and care events plus screening activities. These statistics are classified as experimental and should be used with caution. Experimental statistics are new official statistics undergoing evaluation. They are published in order to involve users and stakeholders in their development and as a means to build in quality at an early stage. More information about experimental statistics can be found on the UK Statistics Authority website. We hope this information is helpful and would be grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes to complete a short customer satisfaction survey. Please use the survey in the related links to provide us with any feedback or suggestions for improving the report.

    Description

Historically, the year of publication was included in the report title in line with past naming conventions. From 2025 onwards, report titles will instead reference the data year they cover, rather than the year they are published.

Following on from the announcement made on 12 December 2024, to ensure consistency, the titles of previous publications have been updated to reflect this new approach.

Due to this, as of April 2025, the “Transport and environment statistics: 2021” report has been renamed to “Transport and environment statistics: 2021 (2019 data)”.

Statistics on a range of transport and environment topics including greenhouse gases and pollutants emitted by transport. Includes experimental statistics comparing the environmental impact of various journeys in the UK by different modes of transport and electric vehicle charging infrastructure by local authority.

An https://maps.dft.gov.uk/journey-emission-comparisons-interactive-dashboard/index.html">interactive version of data on comparing journey emissions is available. Further details, including data and methodology is available.

    Description

Following user feedback, DfT are trialling publishing estimates of cargo group alongside the quarterly Port Freight Statistics, in a proposed third quarterly table PORT0503. This has been published containing current quarter data for the second time.

This new data is regarded as Experimental Statistics, awaiting user feedback and further quality assurance to provide timely estimates. You can provide feedback about this change by filling in this https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/user-research-quarterly-cargo-breakdown/">form. We continue to welcome any feedback on any aspect of the port freight statistics (see contact details).

Total freight tonnage increased by 6% to 110.9 million tonnes. To note, we are now comparing to the second quarter affected by the UK lockdown so increases can be interpreted as a return to more normal levels. (see timeline below).

When comparing July to September 2021 with July to September 2020 through UK major ports:

    • all directions and metrics showed substantial increases on 2020 quarter 3 levels (July to September)
    • inward tonnage increased by 9% to 72.6 million tonnes
    • outward tonnage increased by 2% to 38.3 million tonnes
    • total volume of unitised traffic increased by 3% to 5.1 million units
    • inward units increased by 4% to 2.7 million units
    • outward units increased by 3% to 2.4 million units

When comparing the rolling year to September 2021 with September 2020 through UK major ports:

    • total tonnage increased by less than 1% to 436.9 million tonnes
    • total volume of unitised traffic increased by 1% to 18.7 million units

Detailed final annual statistics for 2021 will be published in summer 2022.

    Description

This report on NHS-funded maternity services in England for June 2021, uses data submitted to the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). The MSDS has been developed to help achieve better outcomes of care for mothers, babies and children.

The MSDS is a patient-level ‘secondary uses’ data set that re-uses clinical and operational data for purposes other than direct patient care, such as commissioning and clinical audit. It captures key information at each stage of the maternity service care pathway in NHS-funded maternity services, such as those provided by GP practices and hospitals. The data collected include mother’s demographics, booking appointments, admissions and re-admissions, screening tests, labour and delivery along with baby’s demographics, diagnoses and screening tests.

For each publication, the following analysis files are published within the zip file ‘Additional experimental analysis using MSDS data’ for the relevant month due to low data quality and completeness: •Delivery method by previous births •Delivery method by Robson group •Smoking status at delivery (for births one month earlier) •Postpartum haemorrhage and other maternal critical incidents (for births one month earlier) •Antenatal pathway level •Births without intervention.

Each zip file also includes a spreadsheet bringing together counts relating to 11 of the 14 Clinical Quality Improvement Metrics that form part of NHS England’s Maternity Transformation Programme.

These statistics are classified as experimental and should be used with caution. Experimental statistics are new official statistics undergoing evaluation. More information about experimental statistics can be found on the UK Statistics Authority website.

    Description

The Children’s People and Nature Survey (C-PaNS) provides information on how children and young people experience and think about the natural environment. Each year, the survey samples around 4,000 children and young people aged 8 -15 years across two survey waves, one in term time and one in holiday time.

Waves 5 and 6 of the C-PaNS ran between the 16 and 23 August 2023 (during the school holidays) and 18 and 26 September 2023 (during term-time). Wave 7 and 8 ran between the 14 and 25 August 2024 (during the school holidays) and the 16 September and 2 October 2024 (during the term-time). These data are alongside data from earlier waves already published.

Different versions of the C-PaNS are available from the UK Data Archive under Open Access (SN 9174) conditions, End User Licence (SN 9175), and Secure Access (SN 9176).

The Secure Access version includes the same data as the End User Licence version, but includes more detailed variables including:

    • age as a continuous variable
    • income (all categories)
    • number of people living in household as a continuous variable
    • ethnicity
    • disability
    • home geography variables, including local authority district and urban/rural area
    • open answers for thematic analysis in CS_Q14 and CS_Q15

The Open Access version includes the same data as the End User Licence version, but does not include the following variables:

    • age band
    • number of people living in household (Top coded to ‘6 and over’)
    • access to private garden
    • income (top coded to £50,000+)
    • gender
    • places withing walking distance from home

Researchers are advised to review the Open Access and/or the End User Licence versions to determine if these are adequate prior to ordering the Secure Access version.

Accredited official statistics are called National Statistics in the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007. An explanation can be found on the Office for Statistics Regulation website.

Natural England's statistical practice is regulated by the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR). OSR sets the standards of trustworthiness, quality and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics that all producers of official statistics should adhere to.

These accredited official statistics were independently reviewed by the Office for Statistics Regulation in January 2023. They comply with the standards of trustworthiness, quality and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics and should be labelled ‘accredited official statistics’.

Users are welcome to contact Natural England directly at people_and_nature@naturalengland.org.uk with any comments about how they meet these standards. Alternatively, users can contact OSR by emailing regulation@statistics.gov.uk or via the OSR website.

Since the latest review by the Office for Statistics Regulation, Natural England have continued to comply with the Code of Practice for Statistics, and have made the following improvements:

    1. Published a development plan with timetables for future work, which will be updated annually
    2. Ensured that users have opportunities to contribute to development planning through their biannual Research User Group
    3. Enabled wider access to the data by publishing raw data sets through the UK Data Service
    4. Provided users with guidance on how statistics from their products can be compared with those produced in the devolved nations
    5. Published guidance on the differences between PaNS and MENE
    6. Improved estimates of the percentage of people visiting nature in the previous 14 days by reducing the amount of respondents answering ‘don’t know’.

These data are available in Excel, SPSS, as well as Open Document Spreadsheet (ODS) formats.

For the second edition (January 2025), data for Wave 7 (during the school holidays in 2024) and Wave 8 (during the term-time in 2024) were added to the study.

    Description

Maternity Services Monthly Statistics October 2021, experimental statistics This is a report on NHS-funded maternity services in England for October 2021, using data submitted to the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). This is the latest report from the new version of the data set, MSDSv2. The new data set is a significant change which adds support for key policy initiatives such as personalised care plans and continuity of carer, as well as increased flexibility through the introduction of new clinical coding. This is a major change, so data quality and coverage has reduced from the levels seen in previous publications. The data derived from SNOMED codes is still being developed. We have included data on smoking at booking and birth weight and others such as BMI and alcohol consumption will follow in later publications. SNOMED data is also included in some of the published Clinical Quality Improvement Metrics (CQIMs) where rules have been applied to ensure rates are calculated only where data quality is high enough. System suppliers are at different stages of developing their new solution and delivering that to trusts. In some cases this has limited the aspects of data that could be submitted to NHS Digital. These statistics are classified as experimental and should be used with caution. Experimental statistics are new official statistics undergoing evaluation. More information about experimental statistics can be found on the UK Statistics Authority website.
