    Description

In 2023, there were a record amount of accountants and auditors working in the United States, with a workforce that totaled more than 1.4 million people. This was an increase of approximately 40,000 when compared to the previous year.

    Accountants and auditors

Auditors and accountants are responsible for preparing financial records, examining these records to ensure their accuracy and compliance, and ensuring that the correct amount of tax is paid. While most companies employ in-house accountants to maintain financial records, to guarantee independence audits are generally conducted by third-party consultancy firms. The leading accounting and audit firms in the United States by some distance are the aptly colloquialized "Big Four" – PwC, Deloitte, EY and KPMG.

    Accountants in the U.S.

The number of accountants in the United States can be expected to continue to rise over the short term, with around one quarter of accountancy businesses planning to hire new staff in 2023. California, Texas and New York had the highest employment level in accounting and auditing, totaling around 380,000 people as of May 2022. The state with the highest wages for accountants, however, was in the District of Colombia, with a median annual wage considerably higher than the national average. Nationally, salary ranges for finance and accounting professionals vary greatly depending on experience and seniority. This can fluctuate from around 50,000 U.S. dollars at the low end to as high as 518,000 for Chief Financial Officers.

    Description

In 2023, California was the state with the highest employment level in accounting and auditing, with approximately 166,000 working within this industry. The state of New York was second in the list, employing roughly 119,000, as well as being second in the list of highest paying states for accounting and auditing.

The accounting industry in the United States

The spending per average consumer of accounting services in the United States increased significantly between 2020 and 2021, with trends indicating that spending on accounting fees will continue to grow. With such great demand, it is little surprise that the revenue of accounting services within the country has been on an upward spiral since 2011. The number of bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks employed in the United States have also had to keep up with these growth trajectories, as employment within the industry also grew in the last year.

Employment levels in the United States

In 2021, figures of those in officially recognized employment rose substantially, as employment in the United States continued on a steady path. According to the International Monetary Fund, this figure is expected to rise continuously until 2023. With the backbone of the U.S. economy lying in the hospitality and leisure industry, employment figures took a significant hit during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 owing to lockdown measures that required restaurants and leisure facilities to stay closed indefinitely. This prediction, therefore, will have come as a relief to the American economy, as hires in leisure and hospitality services was the industry with the second most new employees nationwide in February 2023.

    Description

This table contains figures on the expenditures and revenues per task (policy area) by province in millions of euros and in euros per inhabitant. The figures presented are based on data that is in line with the definitions and classifications used by the provinces themselves in their administration. The presented figures are based on data that adhere to the definitions and classifications that provinces themselves use in their administration. These data are supplied to Statistics Netherlands through the questionnaire called Information for Third Parties (Iv3). The directives for this questionnaire have been laid down in the Directive for Budgeting and Accounting for provinces and municipalities (BBV).

    Data available from: 2017

Status of the figures: The figures in this table are provisional at the time of first publication. Upon the second publication one year later, the figures will become definitive.

Changes as of 16 December 2024: The provisional figures for 2023 have been added. The figures for 2022 are definite.

Province of Utrecht When the provisional data for the reporting year 2018 were published, the province of Utrecht did not yet have an qualified auditor's report on its financial statements. Halfway 2020 however an qualified auditors report was issued. As a result the 2018 data regarding the province of Utrecht may have been adjusted so that they are now in accordance with the approved 2018 financial statements.

When will new figures be published? The new figures from the provincial accounts are published no later than 12 months after the reporting period. The figures can be adjusted on the basis of the availability of new or updated source material. In general, the adjustments are small. The adjustments are made the moment a new annual figure is added to the series.

Because of changes in the source material, Information for Third Parties (Iv3), the data are no longer completely comparable with data from earlier years as of the publication of the figures of the 2017 budgets. In the administration of provinces the classification of expenditures and revenues by task is sometimes revised, which could cause (small) shifts between tasks between the years 2017 and 2018.

More information on these changes can be found in paragraph 3 under 'relevant tables'.

    Description

This table presents a number of key figures of the sector accounts. These main indicators provide the most important information on the total economy and on the main institutional sectors of the economy: non-financial corporations, financial corporations, general government, households including non-profit institutions serving households and the rest of the world. Data available from: Annual figures from 1995. Quarterly figures from first quarter 1999. Status of the figures: Annual figures from 1995 up to and including 2022 are final. Quarterly data from 2022 are provisional. Changes as of December 24th 2024: Data on the third quarter of 2024 are available. Additionally, Maastricht debt (EMU) has been revised from 2013 onwards due to an updated guideline for capitalised interest related to imputed European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) loans. When will new figures be published? Annual figures: The first annual data are published 85 day after the end of the reporting year as the sum of the four quarters of the year. Subsequently provisional data are published 6 months after the end of the reporting year. Final data are released 18 months after the end of the reporting year. Furthermore the financial accounts and stocks are annually revised for all reporting periods. These data are published each year in June. Quarterly figures: The first quarterly estimate is available 85 days after the end of each reporting quarter. The first quarter may be revised in September, the second quarter in December. Should further quarterly information become available thereafter, the estimates for the first three quarters may be revised in March. If (new) annual figures become available in June, the quarterly figures will be revised again to bring them in line with the annual figures. Please note that there is a possibility that adjustments might take place at the end of March or September, in order to provide the European Commission with the latest annual and quarterly figures.
