Earlier editions: Gender Recognition Certificate statistics

Quarterly National Statistics on Gender Recognition Certificates applied for and granted by Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service’s Gender Recognition Panel.

The quarterly releases are released by the Ministry of Justice and produced in accordance with arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority. Gender Recognition Certificate Statistics – October to December 2012

    Introduction

This quarterly bulletin presents the latest statistics on Gender Recognition Certificates applied for and granted by Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service’s Gender Recognition Panel during the quarter October to December 2012, along with quarterly data since July 2009.

The Gender Recognition Panel was established by the Gender Recognition Act 2004, which enables transsexual people to change their legal gender and gain the rights and responsibilities of their acquired gender. All applications are determined by the Panel and successful applicants receive a Gender Recognition Certificate.

There are two application processes for obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate:

    1. Standard track applications are those submitted under the standard application process, on the basis of living permanently in the acquired gender.
    2. Overseas track applications are those submitted under the overseas application process, on the basis of having changed gender under the law of an approved country or territory outside the United Kingdom.

    Executive summary

In the quarter October to December of 2012:

    • A total of 90 applications for gender recognition were received by the Gender Recognition Panel (GRP). Of these 87 were ‘standard track’ applications, whilst further 3 were ‘overseas track’ applications.
    • Some 81 applications were dealt with by the GRP during the quarter October to December 2012.
    • A full Gender Recognition Certificate was issued in 69 cases, of which 52 were to individuals who were registered male at birth, and 8 to individuals who were registered female at birth.
    • Three cases received an interim Gender Recognition Certificate, three cases were refused and six withdrawn.
    • The certificates granted included 40 to applicants born in years prior to 1970; 14 to applicants born in 1970-1979; 13 to applicants born in 1980-1989 and 2 to applicant born 1990 or later.
    • At the end of the December 2012, there were 97 applications pending

The bulletin is produced and handled by the ministry’s analytical professionals and production staff.

In addition to Ministry of Justice professional and production staff, pre-release access to the provisional court statistics of up to 24 hours is granted to the following postholders:

Ministry of Justice: Ministry of Justice: Secretary of State, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Permanent Secretary, Head of Legal Services Commission, Director General of Finance and Public Services, Head of Analytical Services, Chief Statistician, Press Officers and Relevant Special Advisers.

    Description

There is a gender gap in the global literacy rate. Although literacy rates have generally increased worldwide for both men and women, men are on average more literate than women. As of 2023, about 90.6 percent of men and a little less than 84.1 percent of women worldwide were literate. Adult literacy rate is defined as the percentage of people aged 15 years and above who can both read and write with understanding a short, simple statement about their everyday life. Youth literacy rate Not only does the literacy gender gap concern adults, it also exists among the world’s younger generations aged 15 to 24. Despite an overall increase in literacy, young men are still more literate than young women. In fact, the global youth literacy rate as gender parity index was 0.98 as of 2023, indicating that young women are not yet as literate as young men. Gender pay gap Gender gaps occur in many different spheres of global society. One such issue concerns salary gender gaps in professional life. Regarding the controlled gender pay gap, which measures the median salary for men and women with the same job and qualifications, women still earned less than men as of 2024. The difference was even bigger when measuring the median salary for all men and women. However, not everyone worries about gender pay gaps. According to a survey from 2021, 54 percent of the female respondents deemed the gender pay gap a real problem, compared to 45 percent of the male respondents.

    Description

In 2024, there were around 719 million male inhabitants and 689 million female inhabitants living in China, amounting to around 1.41 billion people in total. China's total population decreased for the first time in decades in 2022, and population decline is expected to accelerate in the upcoming years. Birth control in China From the beginning of the 1970s on, having many children was no longer encouraged in mainland China. The one-child policy was then introduced in 1979 to control the total size of the Chinese population. According to the one-child policy, a married couple was only allowed to have one child. With the time, modifications were added to the policy, for example parents living in rural areas were allowed to have a second child if the first was a daughter, and most ethnic minorities were excepted from the policy. Population ageing The birth control led to a decreasing birth rate in China and a more skewed gender ratio of new births due to boy preference. Since the negative economic and social effects of an aging population were more and more felt in China, the one-child policy was considered an obstacle for the country’s further economic development. Since 2014, the one-child policy has been gradually relaxed and fully eliminated at the end of 2015. However, many young Chinese people are not willing to have more children due to high costs of raising a child, especially in urban areas.

    Description

According to a global software developer survey in 2022, the vast majority of developers are males, accounting for ***** percent of all respondents. Female developers amounted to only **** percent of all respondents, demonstrating the male-dominating reality of software development jobs. Gender imbalance in the tech industry The tech industry has an overwhelming gender imbalance, in which women at leading tech companies tend to be the minority. Consider Dell’s workforce and Intel’s workforce as an example. In both leading tech companies, women make up only around ** percent of the workforce. Computing related positions in the United States vary on gender breakdown, with computer hardware engineers ranking the lowest in terms of gender diversity as of late. Diversity & inclusion initiatives When tech industry CEOs and founders were asked whether diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives were effective, **** indicated that they were not effective. This comes at an interesting time, especially given the overall gender imbalance in the tech industry. Not to mention, the majority of senior management positions within the IT industry are dominated by men. Diversity and inclusion initiatives could help to resolve workplace harassment and unequal treatment that many female executives experience within the tech industry today.
